**Responsibilities**
A postdoctoral research fellow position is available at the Cancer Data Science Lab (PI: Dr. Irbaz Riaz - Dr. Irbaz B. Riaz, Bio ( ) at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. The research fellow will work in a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians, data scientists and informaticians.
Dr. Riaz is an Assistant professor in medicine and biomedical informatics. His lab is focused on developing artificial intelligence (AI) methods for electronic medical records data. The current projects heavily emphasize natural language processing (NLP), large language models (LLMs), multi-modal data integration, and computation oncology.
This position (candidate) may engage in following projects:
+ Training and implementation of large language models that demonstrate good performance with healthcare data.
+ Utilize artificial intelligence techniques, including natural language processing such as large language models, computer vision and other deep learning methods, to build task-specific models for diverse applications in healthcare.
+ Develop artificial intelligence frameworks for data extraction from free-text unstructured text reports and imaging/histopathological imaging data.
+ Develop and/or improve predictive models using uni-modal and multimodal electronic health records system data (free text, imaging, genomics)
+ Develop/enhance software for living clinical practice guidelines.
+ Work with a multi-disciplinary team of physicians, computer scientists, and biomedical statisticians to improve artificial intelligence-based approaches for solving complex data science problems in cancer.
+ Harbor excellent verbal- and written- communication and presentation skills.
A Research Fellow at Mayo Clinic is a temporary position intended to provide training and education in research. Individuals will train in the research program of a Mayo Clinic principal investigator. Qualified individuals will demonstrate the potential for research as evidenced by their training and peer-reviewed publications and should become competitive for national research grants. Proof of English proficiency is required for J-1 Short-Term Scholars, Research Scholars, Professors, Specialists, and Student Interns sponsored by Mayo Clinic.
**Qualifications**
**Basic Qualifications (Must Have)**
+ Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Informatics, Data Science, Biostatistics, or a closely related field determined by the program. Candidates must have completed their Ph.D. at the time of hire.
+ Strong foundation in machine learning and artificial intelligence.
+ Excellent Python programming skills; experience with common data analysis libraries (e.g., pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn) and at least one deep learning framework (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, HuggingFace).
+ Familiarity with SQL databases and basic querying skills.

The newly-created Data Science Platform (DSP) supports and advances the research objectives of Rockefeller Universitys faculty and staff by providing training and consultative support in the field of data science especially in the areas of machine learning and artificial intelligence (ML/AI) and deep learning (DL).
Overview
Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, and working primarily with Faculty, Research Staff, Postdoctoral Fellows, and Graduate Students, the Director leads a team of seven (7) Machine Learning Engineers that identify and work closely with internal and external resources to determine how to most effectively support University researchers' needs for applying ML/AI and/or other quantitative approaches to new and existing data sets across a wide variety of disciplines, including structural biology, imaging, microscopy, "omics," neuroscience, immunology/virology, and the physical sciences. The position also includes leadership of the Fisher Center AI Platform, which seeks to apply AI/ML techniques to understand the causes of Alzheimer's disease, improve the care of people living with it, and find a cure.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
+ Consult on experimental design and best usage, with emphasis on best practices for proper analysis and reproducibility;
+ Recruit and manage Data Science Platform staff members;
+ Develop and lead training/classes in ML/AI fundamentals and techniques; adapt and evolve training to best serve the changing needs of the research community;
+ Identify, improve, and/or create appropriate training data sets for ML/AI projects;

Qualifications
**REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:**
+ Ph.D. or equivalent degree in data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer science, electrical engineering, statistics or a related field.
+ A minimum of ten (10) years of research experience in identifying, formulating and solving biological problems through the application of advanced artificial intelligence technologies.
+ At least two (2) years of leadership experience.
+ A strong publication record in top-tier venues focused on machine learning, artificial intelligence or their domain-specific applications, such as AAAI, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, IJCAI, KDD, ICCV, ECCV, CVPR, EMNLP, ACL, MICCAI, IJCV, TPAMI, TIP, ACM-MM, Nature, Nature Methods, Science and equivalent conferences and journals.

The Department has large, vibrant educational programs at the undergraduate, master's, and Ph.D. levels as well as post-doctoral level.
This past year, Johns Hopkins announced a major new investment in Data Science and the exploration of Artificial Intelligence that will be included in a new data science and translation institute, a new state-of-the-art facility and recruitment of 110 new faculty over the next five years. The institute will bring together world-class experts in artificial intelligence, machine learning, applied mathematics, computer engineering, and computer science to fuel data-driven discovery in support of research activities across the institution including within the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering department.
