Responsibilities:
- Comply with and implement operational policies and procedures.
- Work according to the schedule, including weekends and holidays, with rotating shifts.
- Welcome visitors, including VIPs and large groups.

Serve as an ambassador by welcoming visitors to the Museum and providing an overview of the exhibits. As visitors arrive, docents record the number of people who enter. Docents are trained on details about the changing exhibits and the historic J. Gilbert Smith House, so they can answer questions and offer tours. We schedule three docents per 2-hour shift. A one year commitment is preferred. Must be 18 years of age or older. Training will be provided!
We are a mid-sized Museum in Los Altos, and our visitors and volunteers are very friendly. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about our exhibits and local history, and meet people of all ages, from children to seniors. Our new Permanent Exhibition features high-tech, interactive elements for the public, so comfort with high-tech elements is a plus but not required.

Museum Guides are among the museum’s frontline ambassadors. The Museum Guide meets and greets visitors; and offers an immersive and engaging tour experience that of the historic house and art collection; and ensures the safety of visitors and of the museum.
A Hill-Stead Museum Guide should have a strong interest in art, architecture, or history; have excellent communication skills including the ability to speak in front of groups of all sizes, the ability to listen and accurately/tactfully respond to visitors’ questions and comments, and to readily share pertinent information with other guides and museum staff; be welcoming to visitors of all abilities and backgrounds; have an attention to detail; the ability to handle emergencies.
Museum Guides will:
- Conduct guided tours of the house and grounds for individual walk-in visitors and group tours of all ages sharing historically accurate information in an inclusive, engaging, and enthusiastic manner.
- Serve as a room monitor during self-paced tours (also known as "open houses").
- Sign up for a minimum of two shifts per month. Each shift is four hours long and includes giving two tours. This amounts to around 50 hours of volunteer work per year.
- Participate in continuing education classes offered throughout the year.
- Follow all safety protocols and procedures to ensure visitor safety and protection of collections and respond to emergency situations.
- Maintain open communication with the Resident Art Historian, Education Manager and all other Guides.
- Demonstrate flexibility and ability to incorporate new tour formats, and information developed and introduced by the Resident Art Historian, Curator, and Education Manager.

Job Summary
Responsible for archival or museum exhibits, programs, outreach, and processes. Supports archival or museum programs and initiatives. Assists in implementing and administering the museum's on-site and off-site education and outreach programs.
Responsibilities
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Engages in public outreach to K-12 public and private schools, homeschool organizations, campus community, and community. May involve travel to and from outreach locations with the responsibility of delivery, set-up and breakdown of travel exhibits.
2. Responsible for researching and writing curriculum related to outreach and developing evaluation techniques to assess program effectiveness
3. Provides input to staff in development and execution of promotional plans related to outreach
4. Assists with special projects and patrons with research and reference information
5. Conducts evaluations of outreach programs
6. Provides research support for exhibits and outreach programs
7. Assists in managing field trips, in-school programs, homeschool days for K-12 audiences, and dialogue-based programs offered to university and adult audiences
8. Provides administrative support to members of The Museum of History and Holocaust Education (MHHE)
9. Assists with collection management and may assist the communications team as needed.

General Summary:
The Museum Educator, under general supervision, develops, implements, and evaluates educational programs and materials for primary and secondary students, special groups, and the general public. The Museum Educator will also be responsible for coordinating and facilitating on-site tours, distance learnings, outreaches, and labs.
