**Purpose Statement/Position Summary:** The research scientist will be responsible for supporting development and maintenance of population pharmacokinetic/dynamic analysis, simulation and dosing programs. The CHLA INSPIRE (Innovative Synergistic Pediatric Infection Research) laboratory group focuses on optimizing antibiotic therapies, especially for difficult to treat pathogens. Within INSPIRE, Drs. Neely and Gibson direct laboratories that primarily use the hollow fiber infection model (HFIM) to mimic human pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK-PD) in vitro to improve dosing strategies and select ideal combination therapies for pathogens. We use sophisticated mathematical and statistical models to interpret the data from the HFIM, mostly using R. Currently, we study bacterial pathogens (including non-tuberculous mycobacteria, Staph. aureus, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Burkholderia cepacia) and viruses (CMV).
The primary objective of this role is to oversee other members of Dr. Neely's and Gibson's laboratories in the design and completion of experiments. Scientific work will be with the HFIM, as well as completing other microbiologic studies. Candidates must have expertise in basic bacterial culture and quantification techniques. Candidates who have prior HFIM experience and/or PK-PD data modeling experience will have a competitive advantage for this position, but such experience is not required.
Reporting to the directors, the Research Scientist will:
1. Develop, validate, and implement new or modified lab-developed methods, including the HFIM
2. Oversee and coordinate daily work of other lab members
3. For those with interest or skills in PK-PD modeling, contribute to development, refinement, and use of digital models fitted to experimental data
4. Contribute to the preparation, development, and publication of research findings in peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, the Research Scientist may be expected to present their work at professional meetings when appropriate.
**Minimum Qualifications/Work Experience:** 2+ years of post-graduate research experience with independently planning and implementing experiments.
+ The candidate should also have experience with mentoring and assisting other lab members.
+ Experience with planning and implementing experiments, bacterial culture, CFU assays, and MIC determination highly preferred.
+ Experience with mammalian cell culture, PCR, microscopy, and with supervising and assisting other lab members experience is highly preferred.
