Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

  • Serves as the Park Ambassador. Greets and welcomes park visitors; giving information concerning park facilities, park rules and regulations, orients them to park area amenities, and other matters of public interest.
  • Enforces City Ordinances, rules and regulations through verbal directions, physical presence, and or written citations.
  • Participates in making scheduled rounds at all parks and recreation facilities, other City facilities, City Cemetery and other areas as assigned to ensure they are secured and free from vandalism.
  • Announces Park closure, lock gates and restroom doors when needed
  • Receives and responds to citizen inquiries, complaints and requests for assistance within the park system; refers public to individuals or agencies that can provide further assistance as required.
  • Promotes a favorable image of the City and the Police Department by acting in a responsive and professional manner with citizens and outside agencies as applicable.
  • Performs general maintenance task such as, but not limited: organizing park furnishings, delittering park grounds, and trash removal.
  • Monitors and operates two-way radio, cell phone, truck, utility vehicle, office and other types of equipment as required for purposes of patrolling the parks.
  • Maintains assigned equipment and vehicle in accordance with City policy.
  • Receives, reviews, prepares, and/or submits various records and reports including lost and found reports, daily activity logs, accident/incident reports, supply requests, maintenance records, correspondence, etc.
  • Assists with traffic control as needed
  • Familiar with law enforcement methods, techniques, and procedures.
  • Assists with emergency situations involving injury, illness, fire, water, or other causes by notifying proper authorities and performing first aid or CPR when necessary.
  • Must be able to work nights, weekends and holidays on varying work schedules.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Requires High School diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by six (6) months of experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Must be able to communicate in writing and verbally in English effectively.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.

The County of Riverside's Habitat and Open-Space Management District seeks to fill one Park Ranger I/II vacancy to support the Hidden Valley Wildlife Area located in Riverside.

The successful candidate will support the Hidden Valley Wildlife Area and the Santa Ana River bottom locations. Competitive candidates will possess relevant experience in open-space reserves, forestry, parks, military, law enforcement, or fire services. A valid California Class A commercial driver license is highly desired. General knowledge of basic maintenance and groundskeeping is also beneficial.

The Park Ranger is responsible for a variety of duties related to the daily operations, safety, and maintenance of County parks. Park Rangers play a vital role in providing excellent customer service, supporting fee collection and campground registration, engaging with visitors and community members, including the unhoused, enforcing rules and regulations, assisting with challenging situations, and resolving visitor issues. This position also requires conducting both vehicle and foot patrols. Familiarity with gas power tools such chainsaws, weed trimmers, and mowers as well as platforms such as Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, Point of Sale systems, ArcGIS, and other relevant software.

This role is designed to provide a strong foundation in park operations, with the goal of developing into a more independent and experienced ranger over time.

The level at which the position will be filled is at the Department's discretion and contingent on the candidate's experience and qualifications. Incumbents are expected to progress to the Park Ranger II level upon meeting the minimum qualifications for the higher level and satisfactory job performance.

This position follows a 5/40 schedule, 8:00am to 4:30pm with Monday's and Tuesday's off. Uniforms will be provided.

OPTION I
Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in public administration, park or recreation management, forestry, botany, environmental science, or a closely related field to the assignment.

Experience: Three years of working in the operations, maintenance, development, or protection of a park, forest, or public recreational or historical area. (College coursework from an accredited college or univ ersity in public administration, park or recreation management, forestry, botany, environmental science, or a closely related field may substitute for up to three years of the required experience on the basis of 30 semester or 45 quarter units equaling one year of full-time experience.)

OPTION III
Experience: One year as a Park Ranger I with the Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District.

Other Requirements: Incumbents must possess valid certificates in First Aid and CPR/AED. Within the first six months of employment, incumbents must successfully complete P.C. 832. Within one year of employment, incumbents must possess a valid certificate in Basic Water Rescue issued by the American Red Cross or YMCA.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS: License: Possession of a valid class C California Driver's License is needed at the time of application since the role will be patrolling in a county vehicle at the parks.

Assessment: Candidates will be required to take a general abilities assessment prior to being considered for any Park Ranger I/II position.

Environmental & Physical Requirements: The Park Ranger I/II - Parks will be exposed to inclement weather, including extreme heat, cold, and wet conditions, for extended periods. Additionally, they will encounter both living and dead wild and domestic animals, as well as noxious plants such as rattlesnakes, bees/wasps, mountain lions, dogs, poison oak, and stinging nettle. The position requires the ability to patrol parks and perform maintenance under these conditions. The incumbent must also be able to lift and carry heavy items such as pool chemical buckets, cases of water, tools, trash bags, equipment such as chainsaws, and maintenance supplies. The selected candidate must be able to perform these duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

For those positions designated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) as safety-sensitive, applicants are required to complete a DOT mandated alcohol and drug-screening. (A positive test or refusal to test during the past two years will disqualify an applicant from consideration for County employment). OPTION I
Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in public administration, park or recreation management, forestry, botany, environmental science, or a closely related field to the assignment.

OPTION II
Experience: Three years of working in the operations, maintenance, development, or protection of a park, forest, or public recreational or historical area. (College coursework from an accredited college or university in public administration, park or recreation management, forestry, botany, environmental science, or a closely related field may substitute for up to three years of the required experience on the basis of 30 semester or 45 quarter units equaling one year of full-time experience.)

OPTION III
Experience: One year as a Park Ranger I with the Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District.

Other Requirements: Incumbents must possess valid certificates in First Aid and CPR/AED. Within the first six months of employment, incumbents must successfully complete P.C. 832. Within one year of employment, incumbents must possess a valid certificate in Basic Water Rescue issued by the American Red Cross or YMCA.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS: License: Possession of a valid California Driver's License is needed at the time of application since the role will be patrolling in a county vehicle the park.

Assessment: Candidates will be required to take a general abilities assessment prior to being considered for any Park Ranger I/II position.

Environmental & Physical Requirements: The Park Ranger I/II - Parks will be exposed to inclement weather, including extreme heat, cold, and wet conditions, for extended periods. Additionally, they will encounter both living and dead wild and domestic animals, as well as noxious plants such as rattlesnakes, bees/wasps, mountain lions, dogs, poison oak, and stinging nettle. The position requires the ability to patrol parks and perform maintenance under these conditions. The incumbent must also be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 60 pounds, such as pool chemical buckets, cases of water, tools, and maintenance supplies.

For those positions designated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) as safety-sensitive, applicants are required to complete a DOT mandated alcohol and drug-screening. (A positive test or refusal to test during the past two years will disqualify an applicant from consideration for County employment). Reference checks from former DOT regulated employers are also required. Applicants must submit a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) driving record prior to hire. Employees in safety-sensitive positions are subject to DOT alcohol/drug testing in the following situations: random, reasonable suspicion/cause, return-to-duty, and post-accident.

Knowledge of: Principles and practices of natural resources conservation, park management, and general law enforcement; principles and practices of first aid and safety.
