Position Overview

WhirlWind Technologies, LLC is seeking an experienced Principal Network Architect who shall provide network architecture and design services while ensuring secure, reliable, and low latency networking.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provides high-level architectural expertise to managers and technical staff.
  • Develops architectural products and deliverables for the enterprise and operational business lines in accordance with the organization's strategy and goals.
  • Develops strategy of system and the design infrastructure necessary to support that strategy.
  • Advises on selection of technological purchases regarding processing, data storage, data access, and applications development.

Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled and motivated hands-on Network Architect to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and troubleshooting network infrastructure for our clients. The Digital Modernization Sector at Leidos has an opening for a senior Network Engineer on the DISA Defense Red Switch Network team in support of an enterprise VoIP management system - GSM-O II contract at Fort Meade, MD. The successful candidate will have a Network Engineering background responsible for the design, document, test, deployment and maintenance of the IP network solutions within an enterprise environment on a high-paced, fast-moving program.

As a Network Engineer, the successful candidate will be a part of a team that interacts with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including customers and vendors but primarily with subject matter expert teammates. In this role, the candidate will be a subject matter expert (SME) in all things related to the IP Network technologies, ensuring optimal performance, security, and scalability of WAN and LAN infrastructure across multiple environments (DEV/TEST and Production). The candidate will also provide technical assistance, administer configurations, upgrade software, develop and/or update related documentation, ensure applicable STIGs are applied and documented, conduct and support testing on work performed, recommend enhancements, and troubleshoot and resolve issues associated with the various network components.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with DRSN engineers and site personnel for coordinating deployments and maintenance actions.
  • Evaluate system network requirements and make appropriate technical recommendations.
  • Proficiency with Juniper networking devices to include establishing remote management connectivity, updating the operating systems, coordinating and performing verification test (BER or "burn-in" tests) configuring alarm and system profiles, and configuring/testing various layers of the OSI model.
  • Assist IA personnel regarding network security and SSP maintenance. Ensure that the network configuration meets all IA requirements.

As a Network Architect on the Edge Compute and Comms (ECC) NEXT Engineering team, you will combine industry leading commercial technologies with legacy military systems to rapidly prototype and create new products and solutions to address a wide variety of customer problems involving software, hardware, networking, autonomy/robotics, systems integration, and more, while making pragmatic engineering tradeoffs along the way. About the Opportunity

As an architect you will be a leader that is expected to set strategic technical direction for the Federal Reserve. This position is expected to be able to advise and influence across the Federal Reserve organization. As an architect you will need to align technical strategic directions and roadmaps for network products with the FRS business and security strategies. Work with peers and leaders in the Network Product Line to influence their roadmaps including ensuring that they are enabling Infrastructure Architecture and Security strategic priorities. As an architect you will be communicating and presenting at all levels of the organization, including non-technical audiences. Participate in planning, design, and execution of critical and strategic efforts with a focus on recognizing, providing resolutions, and escalating issues before they have impact. Work closely with architects around the Federal Reserve System and business/product owners to understand and advance NIT strategic directions from a network and security infrastructure strategy perspective. This position will require an individual who is a self-starter and can work well in multiple roles including leading a team, participating as a member of a team, and also alone.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop and maintain strategic network and security infrastructure architectural roadmaps with a 2-5 year outlook taking into account business direction, customer experience, and technology trends.

  • Develop and maintain network and security infrastructure capability map.

  • Be an active participant providing tactful advice and guidance during all Architecture Review Board activities.

  • Partner with internal customers to provide guidance on architectural patterns. Recommend and implement changes to business information and technical architecture requirements.

  • Partner with our clients and other resources in detecting critical architectural and infrastructure gaps or deficiencies in the IT environment. Recommend solutions for improvement.

  • Provide input and directional guidance for network and security infrastructure automation.

  • Work with peer architects to create integration patterns that inform and set standards for various traffic patterns in a hybrid enterprise environment.

  • Oversee and direct major, critical, and emerging technology studies. Assess merit and impact, work with NPL Architects on architecture standards and influence designs.

  • Understand inherited risks related to network and security infrastructure environment that encompasses colocation data centers, multiple CSPs, SaaS and on-premise sites that are interdependent on each other.

  • Support Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Delivery (CD) efforts to ensure adherence to CI/CD principles.

  • Maintain working relationships with peers and business partners and communicate with key executives and stakeholders on successes, opportunities, and challenges.

  • Initiate and oversee project development, system/design/testing, requirement direction and investigation of alternatives for implementation of feasible new technology.

  • Provide key consultative leadership on system projects focused on planning, development and implementation of strategic technological directives.

  • Provide strategic foresight and long-term development planning for future technology impacting the Federal Reserve System.

  • Work with a team of highly motivated and skilled professionals to solve business critical challenges.

  • Embrace the System IT Principles, to guide daily decisions and strategic decision-making processes.

  • Occasional travel may be required, including overnight stays.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable discipline or the equivalent is required.

  • 10+ years of technical experience in a complex enterprise IT environment, for large-scale systems across multiple hardware and software platforms.

  • 7+ years of experience in network and security infrastructure technology engineering (e.g., routing and switching, firewall).

  • DevOps/Automation: TerraForm, Ansible, Python.

  • In-depth knowledge of the following:

  • Network Routing protocols: BGP, OSPF, EIGRP.

  • Network WAN technologies MPLS over mGRE, DMVPN, IPSEC VPN, WAN MACSec.

  • Juniper and Palo Alto Firewalls.

  • Algosec or similar firewall policy tool.

  • Cisco Nexus Hardware (ACI & Nexus Mode), Cisco Catalyst 8500, 9k Series, ASR and ISR series.

  • Expert at network fundamentals including the OSI model, TCP/IP, IPv4 and IPv6.

  • Must be comfortable with Linux commands/file system.

  • Strong technical knowledge of IT enterprise systems and tools.

  • Experience with IDS/IPS, network access control, load balancers preferred.

  • Experience learning, sharing, and implementing best practices with the ability to determine operational processes.

  • Progressive leadership experience with responsibility for leading technical staff and matrixed teams within large mission-critical systems with complex network requirements, or the equivalent required.

  • Experience implementing network and security infrastructure for large critical enterprise environment that is a target of Nation-State attackers.

  • Deep understanding of network and security infrastructure capabilities and gaps.

  • Understanding of NIST and FedRAMP security requirements.

The Network Technologies Business Unit currently has an opening for a Network Architect to support a Department of State (DoS) Bureau of Diplomatic Technology (DT) program. This position is for leading the re-architecture of a large and complex network infrastructure. It requires hands-on expertise, leadership of engineers, and engagement with senior customer leadership.

This program provides transparent, interconnected systems and security supporting the DoS in successfully carrying out its U.S. foreign policy mission. DT provides enterprise architecture design, engineering, operations and maintenance support services for desktops, servers, networks, firewalls, and enterprise applications across the Department. Program is named "Vanguard 2025" and is an IT consolidation consisting of the Department's servers, mainframes, network devices, network perimeter, anti-virus engineering, public key infrastructure (PKI)/biometrics/encryption, monitoring tools, telephony, mobile computing platform, virtual environment, and enclave design/security engineering.

Work is performed at the customer's location in Springfield, VA. Position does allow for some remote work after training.

Description of Duties:
  • Re-architect customer facing secure network solution for a large, complex enterprise.
  • Evaluates, designs, documents, installs, implements, tests, and performs problem isolation and resolution, monitors, tunes, sets standards and maintains a range of network and voice components and systems.
  • Performs these functions across some, but not all, physical media, Operating Systems, File Systems, protocol stacks & network components.
  • Provides client consulting and training on the design and use of the network systems and architectures.
  • Plans, researches, evaluates and recommends new storage area network equipment and related technologies.
  • Uses monitoring, performance analysis, network management, software and hardware equipment to troubleshoot and isolate problems; gauge performance and activity.
  • Architects solutions to operational problems within the capacity and operational limitations of installed equipment.
  • May develop and execute contingency plans for network related hardware failures including isolated and major outages.
  • Provides internal consulting, technical guidance, information and support to application developers, computer operations, workstation support, management, and departmental clients.
Qualifications

Required Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in a network engineering/computer engineering related discipline; may accept additional experience in lieu of degree.
  • 14 years IT network engineering and architecture experience (Tier III and above, network infrastructure design and implementation).with large, complex networks.
  • CCNA. Additional related certifications on the architect level are highly preferred.
  • Strong/Deep knowledge of Layer2/Layer3, routing and switching, tunneling, and networking protocols: BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, static, L2TP, IPSEC, VPN, DMVPN, GRE Spanning tree, etherchannel, vlan trunking, 802.1q, HSRP, VRRP, GLBP, VPC, .
  • Deep knowledge of Cisco switching and routing product lines.
  • Strong experience in design/support/troubleshoot large/complex networks end-to-end.
  • Expert experience in one or more of the following: Unclassified Voice Systems, Secure Voice Systems to include red switch, TDM Switching, Voice Over IP (VOIP).
  • Experience with DWDM optical core design
  • Experience supporting the government customers in secure environments, familiarity of NIPRNET and SIPRNET operating standards and applicable guidelines.
  • Firsthand experience in developing and providing quality assurance review of engineering change orders relating to the replacement or enhancement of perimeter security hardware and software.
  • Experienced with performing root cause analysis, risk identification, and risk mitigation.
  • Expert Knowledge of cabling standards, fiber optic and copper cable termination.
  • Management of personnel supporting large government customers.
Required Clearance:
  • US Citizenship.
  • Active Secret Clearance with the ability to obtain Top Secret Clearance.

  • ITIL ® Foundation certification.
