Summary

Spinal Cord Care Technicians provide important patient care within the Nursing Department. Under the direction of the nurse assigned to each patient, this non-licensed team member assists with patient care and other department activities

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Patient Care - The SCCT provides direct patient care, as delegated by the nurse and in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. Patient care performed by a SCCT includes, but is not limited to, the following:
  • Collects and monitors data and reports physiological, psychological, socio-cultural, and spiritual needs of the patient and families as directed by and in coordination with the patient's assigned nurse.
  • Obtains and records vital signs using appropriate equipment and technique.
  • Provides direct patient care including sterile intermittent catheterization, bowel programs, patient hygiene, recording intake and outpatient, and other responsibilities as outlined in department policies.
  • Acts as a safety attendant, as assigned, providing direct supervision under the direction of the nurse to maintain the safety of the patient.
  • Determines schedule for patient specific bowel programs and showers. Assists the nurse in determining appropriate patients to be scheduled under the care of the SCCT.
  • Performs bowel and shower programs with specific patient populations, reinforcing education as first provided by the nurse and in collaboration with the IDT.
  • Provide education to new hires on best practice with bowel management within the inpatient floors.
  • Answers call lights in a timely, respectful manner
  • Documents care via computer/written patient record according to department policies, including content and timeliness of documentation.
  • Provides input to the nurse for use in an individualized plan of care for each patient

Responsibilities The Spinal Cord Injury/Disorders (SCI/D) Service of the VA New Jersey Health Care System (VANJHCS) in East Orange, NJ is recruiting a physician (MD or DO) who has experience with caring for patients with spinal cord injury or disorders, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Multiple Sclerosis or trained in Spinal Cord Medicine (Board Eligible or Certified in Spinal Cord Medicine preferred). DUTIES: The East Orange SCI/D Center is a well-established program dedicated to providing chronic life-long comprehensive care to Veterans with SCI/D and serves as a VA referral hub for a catchment area including all of NJ and Eastern PA. The VANJHCS has an affiliation with Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. The position involves the day-to-day medical care of persons with SCI and disorders in both inpatient and outpatient settings, inclusive of both traumatic and non-traumatic SCI, multiple sclerosis, and ALS. It also includes the supervision of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School students, residents, and fellows. Applicants must possess a current and unrestricted license in any State, have excellent diagnostic and interpersonal skills, a commitment to team building, and have the overall aptitude for leadership, educational development, and research. Summary

  • Review medication administration, treatment administration records for completeness of information, accuracy in the transcription of the physician's order, and adherence to stop order policies.
  • Make daily rounds of your neighborhood/unit/shift to ensure that all nursing service personnel are performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards. Report problem areas to the Clinical Care Coordinator.
  • Requisition and arrange for diagnostic and therapeutic services, as ordered by the physician, and in accordance with our established procedures.
  • Administer professional services such as catheterization, tube feedings, suction, applying and changing dressings/bandages, packs, colostomy, and drainage bags, taking blood, giving massages and range of motion exercise, care for the dead/dying, etc., as required.
  • Assist in training nursing department personnel.
  • Monitor your shift's personnel to ensure that they are following established safety regulations in the use of equipment and supplies.
  • Ensure that your assigned work areas (i.e., nurses' stations, medicine preparation rooms, etc.) and your unit's resident's care rooms and treatment areas are maintained in a clean and sanitary manner.

The Outpatient Spinal Cord Injury Unit Counselor is responsible for providing counseling services to Shepherd Center patients and families, including psychoeducation, interventions, consultation, crisis management, and individual, group, and/or family therapies.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Reports directly to Psychology Department Supervisors and is an active member of the Psychology Department and Shepherd Center committees and mission.
  • Provides timely documentation of interventions/sessions, progress/goals, as evidenced by documentation in the patient's medical record.
  • Completes documentation and billing in the EHR on day of service.
  • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge in the competency areas of mental health counseling appropriate to the patient population and setting.
