The medical oncology unit is located on the 14th floor of Prentice Women's Hospital. It is a 36-bed unit comprised of several different unique medical teams. Majority of our population is comprised of solid tumor patients with the addition of lymphoma and gynecology oncology patients. Our nurses are trained to work within various phases of an oncologic patients care continuum, including new diagnosis workups, post-operative surgical care, chemotherapy/biotherapy administration, oncologic emergencies, as well end of life transitions. Our team is composed of a unit manager, clinical coordinators, charge nurses, education coordinator, attending nurses, day shift and night shift nurses as well as our patient care technicians who cover day shift, afternoon shifts and night shifts. You will learn the specialty care of the Oncology patient population along with the skills and concepts of general med/surg. The hematology oncology unit is located on the 15th floor of Prentice Women's Hospital. It is a 36-bed unit comprised of a few different unique medical teams. The majority of our population is comprised of hematology-oncology patients including leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma, blended with a hospitalist service line that serves patients with all cancer diagnoses. We care for patients within various phases of the care continuum, including new diagnosis workups, clinical trials, chemotherapy/biotherapy administration, oncologic emergencies, and end of life transitions. This unit is fast paced with lots of team collaboration and professional development opportunity for both the new graduate nurse and the experienced nurse looking for new challenges. The foundation of our unit is teamwork and patient advocacy
General Care Information- Stem Cell Transplant- This 36 bed unit specializes in stem cell transplantation and other cellular therapies and performs transplants per year. Stem cell transplant is a potentially curative treatment for many types of cancer. Specialized, comprehensive care is provided to adult patients with primarily hematological malignancies such as leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma and other types of hematologic disorders. Caring for these patients is a holistic and dynamic process that is challenging and stimulating. This unit is fast paced with lots of team collaboration, professional development and opportunity for both the new graduate nurse and the experienced nurse looking for new challenges. Nurses will be able to provide comprehensive care and education to patients and families while building professional relationships. As part of the Lurie Cancer Center, the unit participates in individual and group cancer research.

Your Valued Contributions:
Within the applicable scope of current certification, licensure, competency, and/or credential, assist providers in the administration of patient care in assigned clinical areas. Assists in examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, and treatment of patients under direction of a Medical Provider. Performs general administrative duties in accordance with CLIA, NCQA, PCMH, government standards and company policies and procedures.
Supports and assists clinical providers and professionals.
Participate in huddles with provider and care team. Identify scheduling opportunities, determine special needs for patients arriving that clinic day, identify patients who need care outside of their scheduled visit, and those with missed appointments needing rescheduling.
Screen and respond to patient phone messages in a timely manner according to health center guidelines, collaborate with provider, act on provider response, and communicate with patient; document task communications in EMR.
Provide complete patient assessment, including consistently and accurately gathering information such as vital signs and pre-examination procedures. This also involves the assessment of injuries or symptoms, learning about past medical problems of the patient and other pertinent facts the provider needs to identify and treat the medical problem.
Accurately and consistently document data and assessments in the patient record. May use a computer system and information technology to ensure standard documentation, coding, and completion as required by law and policy.
Reconciles patient's medications and allergies at every visit. Adds medications to the medication module, discontinues medications from the medication module with provider's knowledge and renews medications per provider orders. Updates allergy list per patient self–report, witnessed reaction or verified documentation. Ensures medication dates are updated to match the current year.
Within scope of practice and direction of the provider, assist in all aspects of patient consultation, treatment, procedures, and follow-up care.
Execute medical regimens, including MSS workflow and monitoring inventory, and nursing interventions, including tracking patient orders, as appropriate for the setting and their competency.
Maintain the cleanliness and general appearance of work, examination, and treatment areas; clean, disinfect, sterilize, and maintain equipment and instruments following universal precautions, infection control and hazardous waste removal practices.
In collaboration with the provider, provide patient health counseling and instruction.
Maintains a general understanding of UDS measures, MQIC guidelines, HEDIS measures, PCMH and NCQA standards. Utilizes appropriate resources to guide practice, i.e., Lippincott manual, MQIC guidelines, etc.
Perform routine medical tasks within the scope of license or certification :
Administers patient care, independently and skillfully applying both simple and complex techniques and processes that are specific to the needs of the patient including I.V. catheter insertion (based on credential) , phlebotomy (if deemed competent ), electrocardiograms, urinalysis, pregnancy testing and laboratory tests, and other testing as directed by the medical provider.
Skillfully and competently prepare and administer medications, immunizations, and injections as directed by the medical provider. (Not applicable if not credentialed to do so.)
Understands autoclave use, consistently cleans and sterilizes equipment.
Draw, prepare designated lab work and/or specimens as directed by provider once deemed competent if not already supported by active credential.
Perform designated diagnostic tests as directed by provider.
Recognizes and reacts effectively to emergency situations, seeks assistance, and intervenes appropriately and within scope of practice. Notifies the appropriate people in the event of a medical emergency.
Provides detailed patient education to patient and family members i.e., use of a nebulizer, giving an injection, dressing a wound, etc. following prescribed teaching plans.
General Tasks
Answers telephones, takes messages, schedules appointments, tests, or procedures, arranges referrals, and performs other administrative duties to meet the needs of patients, co-workers, and the department. Required Training & Experience:

Grade Determination:

Medical Support Assistant GS-3:
- Experience. Six months experience of clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; OR
- Education. One year above high school. OR
- Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition candidates must demonstrated all of the KSA's below:
Ability to meet, communicate, and interact with individuals in a courteous and helpful manner in order to give instructions and arrange appointments.
- Ability to utilize computer systems to enter administrative data in patient systems.
- Ability to learn and utilize basic medical terminology to record patient messages and physician requests pertaining to follow-up medical care.
Medical Support Assistant, GS-4
- Experience. One year of experience in clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position. This experience may include but is not limited to; receive guidance from more experienced staff members and require frequent and direct supervision. At this level, MSAs apply general rules and policies relating to clinic functions, staff, and automated data processing methods in support of treatment to patients. They utilize a variety of patient data systems in scheduling patients for treatment and annotates patient records. They perform front desk duties, receives telephone call, and visitors to the MSA unit. They make and cancel appointments, review patient records for necessary information, and review patient demographics and insurance verification. They consult with clinic staff when processing physician scheduling and administrative orders. OR
- Education. Two years of education above high school. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition candidates must demonstrated all of the KSA's below:
Ability to meet, communicate, and interact with individuals from varying backgrounds and other health care team members in a courteous and helpful manner in order to (facilitate medical care for patients
- Ability to use, (and navigate between), various types of office automation equipment and software (i.e. computer systems, web based scheduling programs; insurance collection system; scanning software, multiple line phone systems; electronic faxing programs) to support patient care
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology to assist in the provision of care to patients
- Skill in recording patient messages and understanding physician requests pertaining to follow-up medical care in internal or external clinics.
Medical Support Assistant, GS-5
- Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level. This experience may include but is not limited to; receive minor and less frequent guidance from higher experienced staff members for more difficult tasks. Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to: scheduling and rescheduling patients for treatment; interviewing patients for appointments; referring patients to other medical specialty clinics; providing information to patients necessary to resolve complaints; interacting with both internal and external customers; reviewing and documenting medical outpatient and inpatient electronic health records, as well as administrative records; verifying third party insurance and updating information in the Insurance Capture Buffer (ICB) system; obtaining medical information from patients; coordinating information and actions related to patient care and services; and scheduling appointments in accordance with VHA national scheduling guidelines. MSAs at this level refer all questions regarding medical attention to the appropriate health care team member. OR
- Education. Four years of education above high school. TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED
