About the opportunity:
The Nurse Resident under the supervision of the program coordinator and unit manager/director and in collaboration with his/her educator and preceptors will be responsible for the provision of nursing care to assigned patients in accordance with current standards of care.

The Nurse Resident (NR) is a recent graduate of a nursing program with less than one year of experience as a clinic nurse, or a nurse who has not worked for more than five years. NR are hired into a 12 month Residency Program after which they will continue to work as Staff RNs with a commitment of continuing to work for 18 months total, including the 12 months of residency.
NRs are provided additional training, skills assessment and support during their first year of hire. RNs are licensed professional nurses accountable for direct and indirect age appropriate patient assessment, care planning, patient care and monitoring of patient outcomes to care and must be competent to implement all phases of the nursing process. The Staff RN collaborates with all patient care providers and the patient/family in the development of the patient care plan. The Staff RN is responsible for reporting patient status to the patient's physician and/or LIP and obtaining orders for care. The Staff RN will demonstrate the ability to provide patient/family teaching that is age appropriate and accommodates for the individual learning needs of the patient. The Staff RN is also responsible for the education and mentoring of students, novice nurses and peers as well as promoting educational opportunities for self and others.

The Newly Licensed Registered Nurse (NLRN) utilizes a holistic systems approach to protect and promote client wellness and safety in the physiological, psychological, social cultural, developmental and spiritual domains. Nursing interventions are interdisciplinary, age specific and are directed toward optimal wellness. The NLRN is a nurse who is in their first year of nursing practice. This role ends on the one‐year anniversary of their hire date. At this time, the NLRN transitions to the role of Staff Registered Nurse. The NLRN may occupy a Staff Registered Nurse position after the matching process, but is still considered an NLRN for the first year of practice. NLRNs are not allowed to cover the unit for lunches or breaks or be a shift/charge nurse until they have completed the orientation period.
Education, License & Cert:
The NLRN must be a graduate of a Diploma, Associate Degree or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program and have passed the state board examination by the State Board of Nursing in their state of practice before beginning employment. NLRNs who are graduates of a Diploma or Associate Degree program or possess a non‐Nursing Bachelor's Degree must demonstrate enrollment in a BSN program within 12 months of hire and earn a BSN within four (4) years from their date of hire. The NLRN must successfully complete a medication and IV challenge examination, as outlined by the hospital within the orientation period, as well as maintain CPR certification.
Experience:
The NLRN enters practice at a Guthrie Hospital through the Newly Licensed Registered Nurse Residency Program. Clinical specialty tracks may be offered at individual hospitals. Registered nurses with less than one year's experience must be hired through this program and may not be hired directly into an open position on any specific unit.
