A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Provide or assist with patient care under the supervision of an RN, such as taking vital signs and weight, assisting patients with personal care, point of care testing, dressing changes, applying external monitoring devices and removing urinary Foley Catheters.
  • Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to an RN.

Patient Follow-Up

The H71 Digestive Disease Surgery & Overflow Unit cares for patients needing complex abdominal surgeries, such as total abdominal reconstruction, Whipple, HIPEC, MAL's, bowl resection, gastrectomy, splenectomy, liver resection, fistula maintenance and repair and pancreatectomy. In addition, H71 accepts overflow patients from orthopaedics, bariatrics, gynecology, urology, plastic surgery, ENT and neurology. This is an excellent opportunity for a nursing student as this is a PRN position that offers a flexible schedule and allows for a balance between school, work and life.
**A caregiver in this position works PRN (as needed)** **day/night rotating shifts from 7:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. OR 7:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.**
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
+ Provide or assist with patient care under the supervision of an RN. Patient care may include vital signs, weight, assisting patients with personal care and activities of daily living, patient transfers/transport, pulse oximetry, point of care testing, dressing changes, applying external monitoring devices and removing urinary Foley catheter.
+ Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to an RN.
+ Assist with keeping patients' rooms clean and orderly.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
+ High School Diploma or GED
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA). If you do not hold this certification, you must obtain it during your new hire period
+ Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) will be considered
+ Nursing students: Nursing students who have recently completed a minimum of one clinical rotation as part of an accredited nursing school program may substitute the clinical rotation for the required experience.
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
+ State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA)

Akron General's 5400 Oncology Unit provides care to cancer patients, trains caregivers to give therapy, and provides hands-on learning to achieve chemotherapy competency. As a Patient Care Nursing Assistant (PCNA) on the team, you will perform various tasks, ensuring patients receive frequent attention and observation as needed. This is a hands-on role that requires a present, attentive and patient caregiver who is willing to learn new medical technologies and thrive in a fast-paced environment. On this team, you will gain a wide variety of skills you can use in advanced positions or other departments like the ICU.
**A caregiver in this position works evenings from 3:00PM - 11:30PM, including every other weekend and 3 holidays per year.**
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
+ Prepare units, patient rooms, and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfer, or emergencies.
+ Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, feeding, etc.
+ Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight, and height.
+ Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck's traction.
+ Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner.
+ Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge.
+ Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly.
+ Document patient care in the electronic medical record.
+ Complete ongoing competency requirements, education programs and mandatory training to maintain certification and/or licensure.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
+ High School Diploma or GED
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross upon hire or within new hire period
+ Prior job or educational experience providing basic computer knowledge and skills
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
+ State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA)
+ One year of recent acute care experience OR Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1)
