* Assist in providing direct patient care as delegated by the Registered Nurse within the scope of Unlicensed Assistive Personnel and the level of skill and education.
* Perform basic technical skills which may include: CPR; taking and recording vital signs; measuring and recording fluid intake/output; applying dressings; recognizing and reporting signs and symptoms of common diseases or conditions; administering treatments as directed by a nurse.
* Assist patient with personal care which may include: bathing; mouth and skin care; grooming and dressing; toileting assistance; eating and hydration.
* Provide patients with help walking, exercising, and moving in and out of bed.
* Maintain unit supplies by stocking patient rooms and supply areas to meet patient care needs.
* Documents relevant patient care data.
* May provide clerical support to the unit: doing order entry, chart processing, answering telephones, etc.

* Accredited School of Nursing Required: Enrollment with successful completion of first quarter or first semester of nursing school.
* Required Upon Hire: Basic Life Support.

Working conditions

Lifting

* Patient handling no greater than 35 lbs. without the use of assistive equipment and/or devices (NIOSH).
* Fine motor skills to be able to grasp and control medical equipment and perform precise procedures.
* Push/Pull: Frequently up to 45 lbs. force (i.e., WOW, medical carts).
* Perform hands on CPR at least 20 mins using 100-125 lbs. of force (National Assoc. of EMS Physicians and AHA) Frequency should be seldom or occasionally.
* Ability to move around area with frequent sitting.
* Bending/ stooping/ squatting/ reaching/ kneeling frequently.
* Lifting (non-patient) up to 20 lbs. occasionally and 5 lbs. frequently.

Environmental Conditions

* Exposure to biohazard, body fluids and airborne particles.
* Must be able to complete tasks in a noisy environment.

Mental/Visual

* Vision and hearing required within normal limits (glasses, contacts, hearing aids permitted).

Compensation Range: $18.00 - $23.48 Hourly

Compensation is determined based on experience and applicable certifications.

Nursing Student: Current RN student with nursing fundamentals completed and active Illinois CNA certification.

Schedule: Part-time 24 hours per week, every other weekend.

Under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse, the Nurse Extern I performs those functions not requiring expert nursing skill or judgment. This includes patient care, reporting patient status updates, conditions, or unusual circumstances to the nurse in charge, and maintaining equipment and pristine units. This position gains clinical experience by learning nursing procedures and disease processes while becoming familiar with the hospital environment, physicians and other healthcare professionals. This position is responsible for providing direct patient care activities appropriate to training and competency for assigned patients and for completing and assisting RN/LPN/LVNs with assigned patient care activities while promoting excellent patient satisfaction and outcomes.

Qualifications

License or Certification Requirements:

* Active Illinois CNA Certification
* BLS (CPR) required or must be obtained within 30 days of hire within this role.

Minimum Qualifications:

* Part-time or full-time active student status.
* Successful completion of the first term of nursing courses of a professional Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse program.
* Must be currently enrolled and in good academic standing in a professional Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse program.
* Initial term including didactic/skills lab must include fundamentals of nursing or course equivalent.
* Return of one or two (if available) instructor evaluations indicating satisfactory performance of fundamental nursing skills.
* Successful completion of preceptor tool and core competency at 90 days and annually.
* Must present proof of continued enrollment and passing grade in nursing classes each semester until graduation and remain in good academic standing.
* One year experience in inpatient clinical setting preferred.

Machines, Equipment Used:

* General office equipment such as computer/laptop, telephone, copy/fax machine, calculator, scanner, etc.
* Microsoft Office software, to include Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Physical Requirements:

* Visual acuity, speech recognition, speech clarity.
* Ability to lift, lower, push, pull, and retrieve objects weighing a minimum of 30 pounds including medical supplies and equipment and the transferring and repositioning of patients. Reasonable assistance may be requested when lifting, pushing, and/or pulling are undertaken which exceeds these minimum requirements.
* Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking.
* Ability to reach, stoop, bend, kneel, and crouch are required for patient care functions and in setting up and monitoring equipment.
