5 West is a smaller unit comprised of 25 beds at Butterworth Hospital supporting our Emergency Department. 5W is a fast paced unit caring for a wide range of patient population. This brings a lot of variety to the patients you will care for and provides the ability to strengthen your critical thinking skills and be part of a dynamic team providing excellent patient care to those needing further testing and observation of symptoms. Types of patients with: Chest Pain, Heart Failure, Kidney Stones, Psychiatric Diagnosis, GI, Orthopedic, and Neuro for both Acute and Chronic Illness Patients. Telemetry, IVs, NG/G-tubes, Chest Tubes, Dressing/Wound Care, CT & MRI Patients. 5W Physicians and Advance Practice Providers remain on the unit so there is 24 hour accessibility which improves relationships, care team collaboration, and efficiency of patient care.

A caregiver in this position works day/night rotation, 7:00pm-7:30am or 7:00am-7:30pm.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
* Provide direct nursing care.
* Implement, monitor, evaluate, update and revise patient care plans.
* Monitor, record, document and communicate patients' conditions.
* Administer prescribed medications and treatments.
* Note and carry out physician and nursing orders.
* Assess and coordinate patients' discharge needs.
* Educate patients and their families.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
* Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing
* Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
* One year of current acute care RN experience

2D Observation is a 21-bed unit at Blodgett who cares for a variety of patient populations. This team collaborates well and is proficient in delivering care in a timely manner. The observation operates as an extension of the emergency department caring for patients who are hospitalized for less than 48 hours. Being a part of this dynamic team allows you to strengthen your critical thinking skills and provide excellent patient care. Some examples of the patient populations treated on the Observation unit include cellulitis, CHF, asthma, kidney stones, and TIA.
