**Description & Requirements**
Defense policy and the nature of war are in a moment of historic change. Cyber-warfare has made staggering advances, cheap drones are replacing multibillion dollar legacy programs, AI is increasingly deployed in targeting decisions, and nations from Russia to Israel to the US and China are more willing than ever to violate or test the limits of other nations' sovereignty to pursue their military aims.
President Donald Trump has promised to upend the US military-industrial complex, looking to do away with costly legacy weapons programs, boost the fortunes of tech startups and newer entrants including Elon Musk's SpaceX. The business of defense will be one of the most fascinating elements of his second term in office. Adversaries such as Russia aren't standing still, developing hypersonic missiles and space-warfare platforms that threaten to challenge US dominance. China is expanding its nuclear arsenal as the US invests hundreds of billions of dollars in its own atomic upgrades.
Bloomberg seeks a highly experienced reporter to serve as its global defense correspondent to break scoops and write investigative pieces that will keep readers informed about the future of defense policy around the world. The successful applicant will be well sourced at the US and allied defense departments, and with contractors, lobbyists and lawmakers. The reporter will also be adept at cultivating the emerging players in drones, AI warfare and other rising technologies. The applicant will be a skilled writer with a track record of breaking major scoops, know how to read the balance sheets and income statements of the world's biggest defense contractors, and synthesize complex strands of information.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Proven track-record of scoops, agenda-setting enterprise and investigations in the defense world
* Sourcing with defense officials and contractors in US and allied nations
* Ability to connect the dots and collaborate with colleagues around the world
* Willingness to travel around the globe, sometimes at short notice, with senior military leaders, or to attend high-level military conferences in Bahrain, Singapore, the US and elsewhere
* Strong writing skills and ability to produce high-quality analysis
* Evidence of journalistic dexterity, with the ability to dive into an array of topics on breaking news
