About the Opportunity
The Richmond Fed Supervision, Regulation, and Credit (SRC) department is now hiring for our 2023 Summer Internship Program. SRC is responsible for the supervision of bank holding companies and state member banks. Supervision is completed from two differing aspects, Safety and Soundness (assessing a bank’s financial performance and risk management practices) and Consumer Compliance (assessing a bank’s compliance with consumer guidelines such as Fair Lending and Community Reinvestment Act).
The Assistant Examiner Internship Program provides a unique experience in SRC to explore its business lines and is located in Richmond, VA. The program provides summer interns with the opportunity to enhance essential business skills and increase understanding of the Federal Reserve’s regulatory role to support and evaluate the safety and soundness of financial institutions. During the program, interns will gain exposure to the supervisory process at financial institutions. This will include reviewing various reports, participating in meetings, interacting with management at supervised institutions, and making assessments on risk exposure. Topics of review may include adequacy of risk management processes, operational controls, financial condition, and/or compliance with banking laws and regulations. In addition, the intern will develop a relationship with a mentor, create and deliver presentations, and complete a final project.
The Summer Internship Program provides outstanding students with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience at a unique institution. Through advanced project work, assignments and professional development activities, interns are provided with an extensive understanding of the work of the Federal Reserve. Interns will be given the opportunity to enhance their business skills through critical financial analysis, formal presentations, research and writing. In addition to specific business area tasks, you will receive targeted leadership training, mentorship and valuable networking opportunities.

What You Will Do:
Participate in up to two examinations at the Federal Reserve Bank and/or a state member bank.
Communicate findings of supervisory activities as advised by examination staff.
Responsibly handle highly sensitive and confidential information.
Observe and participate in relevant meetings to gain an extensive overview of the department and critical examination issues.
Gain a thorough understanding of the department and examination process by interviewing staff and reviewing process maps and timelines.
Work with presentation advisor and other interns to create and practice delivering a presentation related to internship experience.
Deliver presentation to the department, where attendees include senior leaders.
Develop a proactive relationship with mentor who provides feedback regarding progress.
Qualifications:
College student with a minimum 3.0 GPA with a preferred emphasis in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Management, Mathematics, Statistics, information technology, information security, cybersecurity or related field.
Demonstrated ability to influence and lead others
Strong project management skills, including organization, planning and execution, analytical and problem solving skills
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively in a team environment
Comfortable with technology, its changing nature and ability to innovate upon it
Other Requirements and Considerations:
An applicant posting for employment as a Federal Reserve examiner/analyst must be a U.S. citizen or hold a permanent residence visa/Green Card and be an intending citizen. Sponsorship or practical training extensions are not available for this position.
Under conflict of interest guidelines administered by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, examining personnel may not participate on an examination of a financial institution or affiliate if the examiner was employed by the financial institution or affiliate within the past 12 months.

FRB ethics rules generally prohibit employees and their immediate families from owning investments in banks, savings associations or their holding companies (Section 5.3). Additionally, employees engaged in Supervision and Regulation may be subject to borrowing and deposit restrictions. These employees may need to recuse themselves from certain supervisory work based on:
their borrowing relationships (Appendix B Parts I.1, II.1 and II.2),
if a financial institution employs a member of the employee’s immediate family (i.e. spouse, child, parent, or sibling) (Appendix B Part I.3 and Part II.3),
if the individual was employed by the financial institution or affiliate within the past 12 months (Appendix B Part I.3 and II.3).
In certain cases, the recusal may be so extensive it could materially reduce the effectiveness of the prospective employee.

SRC is also responsible for Discount Window operations where money can be lent to organizations in need of funding.
The Assistant Examiner Internship Program provides a unique experience to explore SRC’s supervision business lines and will be located in Richmond, VA. The program provides summer interns with the opportunity to enhance essential business skills and increase understanding of the Federal Reserve’s role in the supervision of financial institutions. During the program, you will gain exposure to the supervisory process through bank examination participation. While participating on bank examinations, you will interact with management at supervised institutions, review reports, participate in meetings, and assess risk exposures. You may review topics ranging from adequacy of risk management practices, operational controls, financial condition, and/or compliance with banking laws and regulations. What You Will Do:
Utilizes established methods and tools to perform moderately complex analyses of business issues
Works with clients and other resources to assess current capabilities, identify customer needs and assist in recommendation process improvements
Provides support in gathering, analyzing and compiling information from end-users and stakeholders to ensure processes, software and/or applications meet business requirements
Contributes to process improvement and solution discussions, may present outcomes to management
May participate in cross-functional team initiatives, process improvement and/or technology-based projects
Escalates non-routine or unusual problems to higher level support staff as appropriate
Qualifications:
Pursuing degree or advanced certification with a STEM (Science, Technology, and Engineering, or Math) focused curriculum
Demonstrated ability to influence and lead others
Communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively in a team environment
Creative thinker who embraces change
Strong project management skills, including organization, planning, and execution, analytical and problem-solving skills

The Richmond Fed is looking to hire an intern this summer to support its mission to understand economic activity and the economic outlook of business and community leaders. Through our regional surveys, the Richmond Fed gains valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges of the communities it serves. The Richmond Fed is looking for an intern to support its economic (business) survey team.
The Summer Internship Program provides outstanding students with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience at a unique institution. Through advanced project work assignments and professional development activities, interns are provided with an extensive understanding of the work of the Federal Reserve. Interns will be given the opportunity to enhance their business skills, formal presentations, research and writing. In addition to specific business area tasks, you will receive targeted leadership training, mentorship, and exclusive networking opportunities.
What You Will Do:
Conduct outreach to businesses to recruit them into the Richmond Fed Business Survey panel, including but not limited to telephone and email.
Assist in designing and implementing marketing strategies to increase participation in regional business surveys.
Track, analyze, and report on survey recruiting efforts to increase campaign performance and measure impact.
Assist in analyzing survey participant data to understand response trends and enhance the survey participant database.
Conduct literature reviews on survey methodology.
Participate in trainings on survey methodology.
General Qualifications:
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong attention to detail.
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
Ability to work well in a team setting but also independently.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
Essential Qualifications:
The ideal candidate has an interest in survey research and preferably some experience working on surveys in a professional or an academic setting, although not necessary.
High interest in and enthusiasm for our business surveys and our efforts to expand participation.
Organized, thorough, and enjoys keeping track of a lot of information.
Exceptional people skills, dedicated to the highest level of customer service, and enjoys talking on the phone.
Resourceful and able to hunt down firm information and evaluate sources for quality.

About the Opportunity
Do you like researching and writing about economics issues? The Richmond Fed’s Research Department is looking for an intern to support both its Publications team and its Regional and Community Analysis team. You’ll have the opportunity to write for various Research Department publications, including our economics magazine Econ Focus and our blog Regional Matters. You will also work with regional research analysts on various data and analysis tasks.

What You Will Do:
Research and write articles on economics-related subjects for Research Department publications.
Assist with the update of economic reports, which may include organizing and analyzing data and creating data visualizations.
Perform other miscellaneous research duties, such as literature reviews and writing research summaries.
Qualifications:
Competitive applicants for the Economics Writing and Analysis Internship normally have at least a 3.5 GPA in their economics coursework and overall.
Some writing/editing experience (for example, in an extracurricular activity such as a student newspaper or journal) is preferred.
Basic knowledge of and experience in use of research techniques.
Passionate about data exploration and the ability to communicate findings.
Team-player willing to work and learn in a small, high performing, and collaborative environment, often at a fast pace and under time constraints.
Familiarity with a statistical program such as Stata, SAS, or R
