The salary range for this position is $105,700 - $132,200 per year based upon a San Francisco location. Offered salary is dependent upon experience and location. Summary:

To develop high quality, cost effective, and innovative packages while exceeding internal expectations where possible. Responsibilities include component development, package testing and manufacturing execution.

Responsibilities:

DEVELOPMENT

• Guide technical, aesthetic & cost aspects of the design process
• Execute feasibility on design, COGS, manufacturing capabilities and timing
• Identify suitable suppliers based on project requirements
• Aware of cost impact of each component or methods of production
• Prepare and review color/deco submissions with Creative/Brand
• Review standards & range boards
• Participate in the resolution of packaging related quality issues
• Follow and resolve packaging related timeline challenges

ENGINEERING

• Review and approve technical drawings
• Lead packaging tooling efforts
• Coordinate packaging testing, analyze test results and assess associated risk
• Obtain and distribute press samples
• Oversee line trials
• Establish fill range
• Create and maintain component and assembly specifications

ARTWORK/Specification

• Issue label claim, dieline, recycling codes and UPC for artwork
• Artwork proofing for packaging related elements
• Maintain component specification and fill assembly instructions
• Support regional and QA package data inquiry

GENERAL

• Interface with Marketing, Creative, Operations and Product Development departments
• Understand cosmetic product and packaging manufacturing processes
• Participate in the development of new package development processes and systems
• Develop and maintain a professional knowledge of new or emerging trends in packaging technology
• Lead various meetings and discussions, both internal and external. For example: CPM, Expertise, PKG TB, etc.

REQUIREMENTS:

• BS degree in Packaging Engineering or a related technical discipline
• 5+ years of experience in package development/engineering with a best in class beauty company
• Proven track record of success and a broad understanding of cosmetics packaging
• Proven track record of successful cooperative working relationships with Creative, Marketing, Product Development, and Operations

**Organization Overview:**
The Delivery, Device and Connected Solutions (DDCS) organization within Eli Lilly and Company supports the design, development, and commercialization of drug products and pharmaceutical delivery systems including medical devices and packaging systems. The DDCS organization leverages many alliances in design and manufacturing to rapidly convert proprietary product concepts into products that meet the users' needs and intended uses. This business enables almost $4.0 billion in pharmaceutical sales and continues to grow.
DDCS supports the design, development, and commercialization of medical devices and owns the development and qualification of drug substance (API) and drug product packaging components and container closure systems. The Secondary Packaging Development Engineer has the responsibility for the development, qualification, and implementation of secondary packaging solutions and processes in support of development of new pharmaceutical products, delivery devices, and/or drug-device combination products, with emphasis on patient-centered design. The responsibilities also include developing suitable product distribution solutions to ensure adequate product protection during shipping again mechanical and thermal (for cold-chain products) hazards.
**Responsibilities:**
+ Partner with Device development, Business Unit, and Human Factor teams to drive patient-centered packaging design requirements.
+ Design, develop, & qualify secondary packaging structures (carton, tray, printed materials, labels, and adhesives etc.) to enable Lilly's clinical portfolio development and product launch.
+ Define and verify product stability requirements against shipping hazards such as vibration, shock, vacuum, and thermal stresses.
+ Develop and qualify shipping containers and associated packing/shipping processes to enable product distribution in clinical environment and commercial launches.
+ Develop suitability rationale for secondary packaging and shipping;
+ Complete appropriate documentation to support tech and knowledge transfer and regulatory submissions.
+ Assess engineering risk for secondary packaging and shipping (e.g. DFMEA, AFMEA).
+ Define and establish control strategy elements such specifications and inspection/testing procedures.
+ Mentor lower level engineers and contingent workers
+ Drive packaging related technical engineering tech agenda items and process improvements
+ Incorporate technical advancements and innovations into the current portfolio as appropriate to meet the growing needs of novel drugs and devices.
Compliance:
+ Provide regulatory submission support
+ Ensure work products are compliant with applicable standards (e.g. USP, EP, JP, CFR, ASTM, ISTA).
+ Ensure timely review/approval of methods, departures, procedures, protocols, and changes, etc.
+ Ensure appropriate safety practices and procedures are followed to prevent injuries.
Customer Service:
+ Maintain close partnership with key development customers to integrate package development deliverables into mainstream product development for both small molecules and bioproducts (i.e. the single process map).
+ Maintain close partnership with key development, marketing, and manufacturing customers to ensure clear requirements definition and effective transfer of new products for commercialization.
+ Maintain close partnership with packaging-related groups, including New Product Planning, Clinical Trial Mfg/Pkg, Global Packaging, Mfg/Pkg Sites, and TS/MS.
+ Participate in the corporate procurement strategy for packaging components.
Technical Excellence:
+ Ensure reliable delivery of robust technically sound work products (regulatory modules, technical reports, qualification reports, development history reports, process flow documents, engineering risk assessments, etc.).
+ Participate in engineering due diligence for suppliers and CMOs.
+ Monitor progress of new technology and patient-centered design initiatives.
+ Encourage the application of package evaluation techniques to solve problems.
+ Ensure stays current in the latest developments in packaging for the pharmaceutical industry.
**Basic Qualifications:**
+ Bachelor's degree in engineering or science, with a minimum of 7 years work experience in both packaging engineering and shipping distribution field OR Master's degree in engineering or science, with a minimum of 4 years work experience in both packaging engineering and shipping distribution field

Package Concept Feasibility
+ Drive innovation by presenting new packaging concepts, technologies and delivery systems to support new Marketing, Product Development and Design ideas.
+ Search new applicable technologies both within and outside our industry in order to continuously evaluate best practice and support product innovation.
+ With the assistance of senior development, provide a comprehensive feasibility of each concept or package that defines function, manufacturability, component cost, tooling estimates, preliminary development lead time, risk and global consistency.
Project Management
+ Support the Strategic Management Initiative by managing all aspects of the development process.
+ Package Feasibility.
+ Packaging outline development.
+ Component/Package costing specifications and technical profiles.
+ Supplier recommendation/selection.
+ Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (Pre⁃Design Turnover and Post Business Award).
+ Suggest tooling strategy to support both preliminary forecast and weekly rate of production requirements.
+ Build value analysis into every new development ensuring the construction and design provides the most cost effective way to achieve design criteria but also provide the best function and quality.
+ Manage projects through Technical Packaging to ensure design and construction meets all Estée Lauder engineering requirements.
+ Develop and implement package test plans for all projects.

Timeline Management
+ With the assistance of senior development, provide detailed component timelines including all package development tasks and manage them.
+ Support Global Brand Supply Chain (GBSC) and Global Supplier Relations (GSR) with package development schedules and identify risks or ways to mitigate risks to support a component availability requirement.
+ Identify and inform GBSC and GSR of any risks and or delays during the course of development.
+ Establish workload priorities to ensure all projects are managed within expected due dates.
Direct and Indirect Management
+ Communicate and work closely with all development groups including Marketing, Product Development, R&D and Design.
+ Work with Package Operations to generate outlines efficiently and process artwork correctly and effectively.
+ Work with GBSC and GSR to manage specific project development and provide detail analysis on risk when required.
+ Build and cultivate relationships with Global Manufacturing and Manufacturing Engineering.
**Qualifications**
+ Education/Certification: Minimum BS degree in Packaging Science or Engineering. CIPT or IOPP certification.
+ Direct Experience: 5 + years experience in cosmetic package development.
+ Experience in beauty or related industry with proven development experience.
+ Proficiency in computer systems including Unique Package Definition Systems, MS Excel, Word, Outlook and Timeline management systems. Technical Competency
+ Technical competency in analysis of geometric objects in 2 and 3 dimensions including understanding of clearances, fit and finish of packaging components and subcomponents.
+ Knowledge of materials used in the construction and manufacturing of primary, secondary and tertiary packaging including but not limited to: Injection molding, Extrusion molding, Metal forming, Glass forming, Vacuum forming, Assembly of components, Dispensing systems (Pump, Airless), Folding carton and rigid box design.
+ Knowledge of decorating techniques and materials used on primary, secondary and tertiary packaging.
+ Knowledge of test methods used to validate component/package performance.
**Pay Range:**
The anticipated base salary range for this position is **$115,000.00** **to** **$115,000.00** **.** Exact salary depends on several factors such as experience, skills, education, and budget. Salary range may vary based on geographic location. In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for participation in a highly competitive bonus program with the possibility for overachievement based on performance and company results.

The role will primarily focus on supporting efforts to identify appropriate materials of construction for new chemical manufacturing processes and failure analysis of existing equipment and piping. This includes assisting with literature searches on existing material applications, setting up corrosion coupons and analyzing results in the lab, and making materials of construction recommendations based on testing results and available economic data.
