Summary:

With minimal supervision from the Manager, the position leads the design and technical development of packaging solutions for new and existing products. This position is responsible for the development of packaging materials by working with Project Teams and Vendors to recommend, review, test and identify costs for various packaging design proposals. The position is responsible for creating detailed specifications and accurate bill of materials for successful packaging implementation. The position supports production facilities by assisting in issues resolution and optimizing packaging design to ensure peak performance.

The position is expected to manage a mix of low-to-medium complexity commercial projects which require fundamental packaging technology expertise. As a representative on project teams, the position is expected to advocate the best interests of packaging via sharing of technical knowledge, gathering fact-based data, providing analytics, and implementing solutions which deliver against project scope and expectations.

Major Duties & Responsibilities:

Product & Packaging Development/Commercialization

* Collaborate with project initiator to define, understand, and align to project objectives and expectations.
* Design, review, recommend, and test various packaging design proposals.
* Consider various packaging material substrates and structures in the design of primary, secondary and tertiary packaging to minimize material usage and optimize manufacturing and labor efficiencies, while maintaining product integrity and enhancing retail performance and aesthetics.
* Determine impact of new packaging design on existing and new automation systems at manufacturing locations.
* Develop design-of-experiments/test methodologies on packaging materials and structures to determine performance attributes best suited to maintain product quality, integrity, and maximize shelf-life while minimizing costs.
* Conduct analytical testing on materials and structures; evaluate and interpret technical data findings and clearly communicate results to stakeholders.
* Coordinate and support equipment trials, line trials, distribution tests, etc. to validate new packaging materials and structural designs
* Recommend best design, align with stakeholders, and execute optimized packaging design solution.
* Contribute to project success through clear written and verbal correspondence and presentations understandable by stakeholders of varying technical & business understanding
* Ensure projects remain on schedule by setting achievable expectations, proactively driving tasks for on-time completion, proactively highlighting potential risks to task completion, timely responses to communications, and actively participating in project team meetings.
* Simultaneously manage multiple projects and prioritize work accordingly to meet established and aligned to timelines and deliverables for each.
* Assess and resolve identified packaging design problems and opportunities (ie. consumer, retail, distribution, manufacturing performance) on existing items. Work with cross-functional stakeholders to implement design, quality, process, and system improvements as a result of findings to ensure long-term corrective action.



Documentation

* Create and publish robust and accurate specifications which detail critical attributes to ensure consistent material quality and packaging assembly to meet aligned performance requirements. This includes mechanical drawings, written specifications, and process instructions.
* Provide necessary packaging component mechanical drawings for artwork development and layout. Approve graphical artwork for correct application to mechanical drawing and critical-to-function attributes (ie. UPC, date code, eyetrack)
* Create, enter and publish accurate packaging bill of materials into the Material Data Management System to enable planning and sourcing of materials, and correct build of the Finished Good Item.
* Publish specifications and bill of materials to meet established timelines and priorities to enable production planning and material order requirements.
* Support creation and review of packaging quality standards and tolerances, and regulator documents.
* Work with Procurement to obtain cost estimates for new packaging materials by providing necessary specifications and information. Assist in presenting cost estimates for input into business case impact analytics.
* Ensure packaging related risks and key decisions are proactively, timely, visibly, clearly, and thoroughly documented in project team minutes, gate review documentation, on-line project folder/archives, project presentations, and emails.
* Ensure technical reports documenting test results, data, and analytics are appropriately archived in shared data sites/folders, project folder/archives, etc. for easy identification and retrieval.

Packaging Optimization

* Identify and initiate packaging research aimed at decreasing costs, reducing material usage, and improving recyclability while maintaining product & packaging integrity.

Sol de Janeiro is seeking a Packaging Engineer who will play a crucial role in the development and implementation of packaging solutions for our products. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product development, manufacturing, and quality assurance, to ensure that our packaging meets the highest on-brand standards of functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability. What You'll Be Working On:
  • Packaging Design : Research, develop, and design packaging solutions for products, considering functionality, branding, and sustainability. Guide Global Product Marketing in new product briefs. Collaborate with packaging design team to form feasible innovative solutions that meet the brand's aesthetic, design guidelines, and sustainability commitments.
  • Material Selection : Collaborate with suppliers to choose appropriate packaging materials, ensuring feasibility and compatibility with formulations and meeting sustainability goals. Actively research new sustainability trends of materials and packaging solutions.
  • Supplier Relationship Management : Build and maintain strong relationships with packaging material suppliers and contract manufactures, ensuring timely and reliable delivery of sustainable materials and collaborating on continuous improvement initiatives. Travel to suppliers and manufacturing sites is required (10 - 15% of the time).
  • Quality Assurance : Implement and oversee quality control measures to ensure packaging meets requirements and maintains product integrity. Provide direction to test and evaluate packaging components. Develop and implement testing methods for packaging components and finished goods. Collect and compare measured data to packaging specifications. Maintain our quality expectations according to our brand standards.
  • Quality Control Documents : Manage and maintain quality control documents, including but not limited to standard operating procedures (SOPs) for launch processes, packaging testing and inspection processes. Create detailed assembly specifications and set standards.
  • Cost Optimization : Work closely with the procurement team on executing cost-effective packaging solutions without compromising product quality. Implement new and improved processes that will result in effective cost reduction / harmonization programs for new or existing products. Manage programs to completion with focus on packaging lead initiatives.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration : Collaborate with product development, manufacturing, and marketing teams to understand product requirements and align packaging design accordingly.
  • Innovation : Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies to introduce innovative feasible packaging solutions. Periodically share arising packaging trends to the team.

Packaging Engineer

Our Packaging Engineers are responsible for planning and directing activities associated with design, testing, and development of new RV and Marine packaging ideas. They assist in developing, implementing and maintaining project plans for product distribution.

Duties and Responsibilities:

* Lead and manage packaging development and improvement projects to meet client, company, and regulatory needs for New (NPD) and Legacy Aftermarket products.
* Support internal production issue and improvement opportunity investigations, root cause determination, and packaging product/process improvements where applicable.
* Remain current on packaging innovations throughout the industry and proliferate leading technology within the Company.
* Consult with vendors in the development of packaging for components and materials.
* Establish supplier quality standards and support supplier audits as needed.
* Maintain accurate and compliant documentation to meet Company, client, and regulatory expectations.
* Work with key functions to design packaging using appropriate structure analysis, test methods, design methodologies, feasibility justification, and business case processes.
* Work with key functions to correctly implement engineering changes from a quality, process, and cost-conscious point of view.
* Documentation of ISTA testing results and packaging weight and dimensional data.
* Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

* Education: Bachelor's Degree in related field
* Work Experience: 1 year of experience in a related field
* Computer Skills: Experience with Microsoft Office; CAD Software certification; ability to maintain data library including photographs; Inventor or Solidworks Experience
* Cross-functional skills: Ability to work well cross-functionally; engage and build effective relationships across the organization; provides excellent internal and external customer service

Travel:

Possible local travel to packaging suppliers. No overnight travel anticipated for this role.

Overview
Insmed is seeking a talented and motivated Packaging Engineer to join our team at our Bridgewater, NJ headquarters. This is a hybrid role that offers a blend of on-site and remote work opportunities. As a Packaging Engineer at Insmed, you will play a crucial role in developing and optimizing packaging solutions for our innovative drug products. You will lead packaging development projects from concept to implementation, ensuring that our packaging meets all regulatory requirements, protects product integrity, and enhances user experience. The individual will conduct packaging development projects from initiation through clinical and commercial manufacture (launch & beyond). Projects will consist of modifications of packaging for existing products as well as the development of packaging for new products. The individual will be responsible for meeting timelines, finding solutions to problems, managing expectations, and delivering to those expectations. The individual will have accountability to their packaging projects to assure they meet quality and consumer expectations while maintaining project schedule and budgets. Under limited manager supervision, the individual will also work closely with quality, finance, procurement, regulatory, engineering, operations, consultants and outside vendors.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead packaging development projects utilizing various materials related to pharmaceutical packaging (plastics, glass, films, fiberboard, corrugated,)
  • Execute projects encompassing primary through tertiary packaging development including labeling and combination product kits
  • Generation/Review and approval of test plans and reports for packaging validation
  • Creating and maintaining timelines
  • Completion of qualification programs for new package designs and materials
  • Implementation of cost-saving initiatives related to package designs and materials
  • Initiate/Review of Change Controls, Deviations, & CAPAs related to packaging components
  • Conduct hands-on evaluation of packaging for conformance to project and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversight responsibilities for commercial packaging sites and CMO's
  • Travel to vendor and manufacturing locations for support of packaging project activities (up to 20% travel).
Education and Experience
  • BS degree in Package Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Sciences
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in pharmaceutical or medical device packaging
  • A preference will be towards candidates that have experience in pharmaceutical packaging areas.

Skills and Competencies
  • Primary through tertiary packaging development for new product launch
  • Coordination and completion of qualification for new package designs and materials
  • Development of component specifications
  • Basic Knowledge across different packaging materials / converting methods:
    • Corrugated containers
    • Folding cartons (solid fiberboard)
    • Plastic bottles/Glass vials
    • Flexible Packaging
    • Labeling
    • Patient Kits
    • Thermoformed Packaging
  • Excellent project management skills
  • High interpersonal skills clearly showing strong communication and ability to work with cross functional teams
  • A self-motivated and proactive personality with ambitions to "learn and deliver" within a fast paced, "employee empowered" atmosphere
  • Experience with cost reduction initiatives and vendor management
  • High competency in CAD software, Microsoft applications, and general computer usage.
  • Familiarity with cGMP's

Salary Range
$111,000 - $156,133 a year

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS FOR THIS POSITION:
  • Monitor, maintain, & control work schedule and backlog (design requests, samples, conversions, small production orders).
  • Use knowledge & expertise to work directly with customer and/or sales at conceptual phase.
  • Accurately finalize one-up carton design specifications.
  • Understand and perform or coordinate test procedures for validating packaging performance.
  • Maintain stock sheet rack and control inventory.
  • Cut prototype samples for customer review & any testing.
  • Operate & maintain CAD table.
  • Coordinate production tooling orders with Customer Service, Sales, and Production teams.
  • Manage art for approvals with approved vendors.

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
  • Highschool Diploma / Five years' experience in drafting or related field.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
  • Associates or Bachelor's degree / Five years' experience in corrugated design.

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:
