Key Responsibilities:

- Packaging Design & Development: Design, develop, select appropriate packaging materials to ensure product integrity, and optimize packaging solutions that meet both functional and protective requirements while minimizing material usage and costs. Collaborate with product managers to define project specifications for product, packaging, and label design.
- Project Coordination: Work closely with internal teams—such as product development, logistics, and quality assurance—to ensure packaging designs align with product specifications, shipping requirements, and customer needs.
- Vendor Management: Establish and maintain strong relationships with domestic and international vendors to ensure timely procurement of packaging materials and the effective execution of packaging projects.
- Analytics-Driven Optimization: Utilize data analytics to assess packaging design effectiveness. Analyze packaging testing data, including vibration, compression, and drop test results, to drive improvements and cost reduction.
- Testing and Validation: Conduct rigorous testing of packaging solutions, utilizing ISTA 6 test procedures, to simulate real-world conditions and ensure product integrity during transportation. Analyze test results and identify trends to enhance packaging performance.
- Quality Control: Implement and oversee quality control procedures to ensure all packaging meets company standards, ISTA certification, and regulatory requirements. Perform periodic AQL level inspections on incoming products to ensure specifications are met.
- Inventory Management: Manage the inventory of packaging materials and ensure optimal stock levels to support production needs without overstocking.
- Cost Management: Monitor and control packaging costs to ensure adherence to budget constraints and maximize cost-efficiency.
- Innovation: Stay updated with the latest packaging technologies, trends, and sustainable practices to continuously improve packaging processes, materials, and sustainability initiatives.
- Sustainability Initiatives: Incorporate sustainable packaging practices, explore eco-friendly materials, and analyze the environmental impact of packaging options to align with corporate sustainability goals.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify and implement process improvements to enhance packaging designs and testing methods. Use analytics to track improvements and measure success.
- Documentation & Reporting: Develop and maintain technical specifications, standards, and other necessary documentation for packaging components and processes. Prepare detailed reports on packaging tests, including compliance documentation, analysis of data, and recommendations for improvements. Develop and maintain packaging guidelines, standards, and best practices.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 7-10 years in packaging management, with at least 3 years in a leadership role. Proven experience in ISTA 6 packaging standards, packaging design, and optimization.
- Skills: Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills. Proficiency in packaging software and tools. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Primary Responsibilities:
Daily duties include support in the sustainment of the force protection systems worldwide which includes transportation support and packaging of the associated components, parts, and supplies associated with the force protection systems. Support warehouse operations stocking and pulling parts, conducting inventories, entering data into the logistics accountability system. Operating materiel handling equipment, trucks, and other equipment for moving and transporting parts and components. Responsible for training, monitoring and assigning work flow of junior transportation/packaging specialists.
Basic Qualifications:
-Active Secret security clearance required.
-Associate's Degree and 2-5 or more years of relevant experience; or 4-8 years of relevant experience related to transportation/packaging of equipment, repair parts, consumables and supplies typically performed in a warehouse setting; in lieu of degree.
-This is a journeyman level position with commensurate experience required.
-Must be able to work in Huntsville, AL for the duration of the contract effort supporting five days a week at 8 hours per day with flexibility to work overtime on occasion.
Preferred Qualifications:
-Relevant transportation and packaging experience of the force protection systems or similar military equipment.
-United States Army/DOD logistics and transportation and packaging experience a plus.

**Your Skills and Expertise**

**This position will be filled at the Packaging Specialist 3/4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.**
Come join our team! The Nuclear Materials and TRU Waste Shipping (NPI-7) group is accepting applications for a Packaging Specialist 3/4 to help us meet our mission. NPI-7 supports the TA-55 programmatic mission ensuring safe, efficient and compliant shipping of all fissile, radioactive and hazardous materials generated/stored at the TA-55 Plutonium Facility, the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research (CMR) building, the TA-50 Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment Facility (RLWTF), and the Radiological Laboratory Utility Office Building (RLUOB), Radioassay and Nondestructive Testing (RANT) and the Transuranic Waste Facility (TWF). We offer plenty of opportunities to learn new things and a supportive environment when challenges arise.
The Packaging Specialist will ensure safe and compliant packaging and or transportation of nuclear material, explosives, and other hazardous material transfers performed by NPI-7 are in full compliance with hazardous materials regulations. Provide review and verification of hazardous material packaging's, and shipping documentation. This position interacts with and represents LANL on Hazardous Materials Packaging and Transportation (HMPT) issues with other HMPT experts in the DOE complex, National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Department of Transportation (DOT), and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Maintain required safety and security training and assure safety and security compliance in respect to all material and waste movements both onsite and offsite. A full understanding of applicable safety basis documentation is required (i.e., Documented Safety Requirements (DSAs); Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs); the Transportation Safety Document (TSD); Safety Analysis Reports for Packages (SARPs); and the Explosive Safety Manual).
Packaging Specialist3 ($85,900 - $39,900)
The packaging specialist 3 will be expected to perform the following duties, but are not necessarily limited to:
+ Provide technical assistance to LANL customers and management on matters dealing DOE contract compliance.
+ Understand and adhere to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance specific to facility operations.
+ Participate in developing and implementing policies, procedures, systems, and/or forms related to the management, disposition, coordination, packaging, movement, storage, quality control and/or transportation of Nuclear Material, Explosives, other Hazardous Materials, and/or Classified Matter.
+ Develop and implement policies, procedures, systems, and/or forms related to the management, disposition, coordination, packaging, movement, storage, quality control and/or transportation of Nuclear Material, Explosives, other hazardous materials, and/or classified matter.
+ Implementation of LANL Federal Motor Carrier Safety program requirements.
+ Provide input on cost effective improvements.
Packaging Specialist 4 ( 104,100 - 172,200)
In addition to what's outlined above, the Packaging Specialist 4 will be responsible for:
- Management, disposition, coordination, packaging, movement, storage quality control and accountability functions related to Nuclear Material, Explosives, other Hazardous Materials and Classified Matter.
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in assessment activities.
This position is viewed as an expert in packaging and transportation concepts within the Laboratory and Department of Energy (DOE) complex. Assignments are often self-initiated and virtually self-supervisory. Independent judgment used for determining the course of action to accomplish objectives.
**What You Need**
**Minimum Job Requirements:**
+ Extensive knowledge of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to nuclear materials management.
+ Extensive experience working in a team environment and experience independently managing multiple tasks concurrently.
+ Extensive knowledge in the following areas: Regulations for packaging, marking, and labeling hazardous materials; nuclear materials management including special nuclear materials processing, storage, control, disposition and distribution as well as knowledge/understanding of federal, state and local standards.
+ Knowledge/understanding of SARP requirements for various Nuclear Material, hazardous material and or classified matter packages.
+ Broad experience in scoping work, planning, scheduling and organizing/coordinating resources for hazardous material and shipments.
+ Significant experience in Nuclear Material, hazardous materials or classified matter management, disposition, coordination, packaging, and or transportation.
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
**In addition to what is outlined above, the Packaging Specialist 4 will require:**
+ Demonstrated expert understanding of safety basis documentation and its implementation related to the management, disposition, coordination, packaging, movement, storage, quality control and/or transportation of Nuclear Material, other hazardous materials, and/or classified matter.
+ Expert experience performing proper closure processes for packages containing hazardous material.
**Education/Experience at a lower level:**
Position requires an Associates Degree and 8 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.
**Education/Experience at a higher level:**
Position requires an Associates Degree and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be expected.
**DOE 426.2A:** Both the lower level and higher level position will be subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities. Requirement for this position is a High School Diploma
**Desired Skills:**
+ Experience working in a nuclear high hazard facility.
+ Knowledge of facility operating requirements, safety authorization basis and /or Conduct of Operations.
+ Knowledge of radiological controls, criticality safety.
+ Knowledge of Integrated Work Management (IWM) and integrated safety and security management (ISSM) procedures.
+ Knowledge of Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) for LANL and other applicable treatment, storage and disposal facilities (e.g. WIPP and NTS).
+ Knowledge of LANL conduct of maintenance, conduct of engineering, conduct of operations, and quality assurance programs as they apply to management, disposition, coordination, packaging, movement, storage, quality control and/or transportation of Nuclear Material, Explosives, other Hazardous Materials, and/or Classified Matter.
+ LANL Derivative Classifier granted authority by the Los Alamos Classification Program.
+ Active Q clearance and ability to participate in the Human Reliability Program (HRP).
+ Current or previous LANL Authorized Shipper qualification.
+ WCATS trained and qualified.
**Work Location:** The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
**Position commitment:** Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
