Job Description
The Paper Mill Production Specialist is responsible for ensuring safety and environmental stewardship of our employees and our processes within the papermill. This position oversees the production of 3 paper machines including Logistics (Inbound and Outbound), Utilities (Water Recycling Facility and Boilers), and Maintenance coordination.
How you will impact WestRock:
* Responsible to uphold the Solvay Mill Team Concept in all aspects: safety, training, completion and adherence to policies and procedures. Includes periodic inspections of all area equipment, housekeeping of facilities, which includes the writing of work orders when deficiencies are observed.
* Act as a spare shift team coordinator and/or BUS (i.e. vacations, training, etc.).
* Recommend and initiate solutions for continuous improvement by completing one six sigma project a year.
* Participate in the Safety Leadership Team.
* Assist in technician training (i.e. progress updates, training timelines, etc.).
* Using team concept - coordinate mill production activities, using discretion and decision-making skills, to meet Company and mill goals. Work with Business Unit Leaders / Specialists and technicians to efficiently optimize mill productivity and uptime.
* Coordination of mill shift maintenance and shutdown activities.
* Assist on machine outages (i.e. leading crews and jobs)
* Monitor and hold teams accountable for teamwork adherence (i.e. quality, rounds, etc.).
* Support mill shift team and line team coordinators by participating in team meetings and following up on action items.

**ABOUT THE ROLE**

This position will be responsible for providing ongoing technical support to the production department as well as primary support for Environmental Regulatory Compliance. **WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING**
+ Provide experienced supervision to support 6 or more shift personnel to ensure manufacturing lines remain in working order.
+ Ensure a quality product is manufactured in a safe and cost-efficient manner.
+ Respond to emergency issues as required.
+ Ensure company policies and procedures are maintained and followed.
+ Provide technical support to the manufacturing team.
**Job Duties and Responsibilities**
+ Promote a safe working environment in all interactions with mill personnel as well as personally following all safety rules and regulations.
+ Improve the reliability of the process control systems. This includes the DCS system as well as level, pressure and consistency control systems.
+ Day to day operation of the wastewater treatment facility.
+ Initially performing the testing and data entry functions for the Environmental Compliance and eventually obtaining a Certificate of Competency for the facility.
+ Preparation of capital request, track project status and overall capital plan.
+ Obtain quotes for equipment and/or services.
+ Assist in design of additions/installations.
+ Implement daily operations schedules as set forth by the Mill Superintendent to meet production schedules, product standards, and operational costs. Responsible for the operation of all prime machines on respective shift and entire plant on off shift. Assist operators as necessaryto keep the lines running.
+ Input and/or review production inventory into production database to ensure accurate reporting to finance.
+ Implement employee schedules as set forth by Mill Superintendent in accordance with machine operating requirements.
+ By approval of Mill Superintendent, adjust schedules as necessary and document attendance in an appropriate manner.
+ Support training of hourly shift employees to ensure daily objectives are met.
+ Support coaching, motivating, and disciplining efforts of all hourly shift production employees ensuring performance standards are met to improve morale.
+ Responsible for documenting and communicating all issues to the Mill Superintendent and Human Resources.
+ Coordinate repairs and preventative maintenance issues with Maintenance department.
+ In collaboration with Mill Superintendent, compose and follow through on all necessary paperwork/documentation for such issues as employee performance evaluations, time & attendance system, downtime reports, absenteeism reports and accident reports.

Primary Function :
The incumbent provides effective direction and supervision of Paper Machine Areas of Otsego Paper LLC to meet the TPH expectations from the mill. The areas of responsibility include but are not limited to Wet End staff and operations, Dry End staff and operations, RPM support, area environmental compliance, supporting plant capital planning, supporting risk mitigation (including fire protection), purchasing/procurement, area infrastructure and utilities.

- Maintain well organized and accurate records relating to equipment maintenance, process efficiency, government agency reports, permits and material requisitions.
- Develops and coordinates and comprehensive departmental responsibility program contributing to the total plant objective of maximum profit through low delay, improved productivity, and maintenance cost control.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, Factory Mutual and Company environmental and safety regulations. Recommend and implement corrective actions which can be made to meet this goal.
- Can read and follow basic P&ID’s, electrical one-lines, mass and energy balances, etc.
- Has experience with SCADA and DCS operations to support areas during process upsets or coverage requirements.
- Responsible for maintaining a high level of morale within the department to aid productivity and employee retention.

Reporting to the Production Manager, the incumbent is foremost responsible for the safety of the areas of supervision and must continually elicit a high standard of safety performance from the personnel under their supervision. The General Foreman must not only be proficient in all aspects of Paper Machine operations but equally competent in their general managerial abilities since they are required to provide direction, guidance, and motivation to their employees. The individual will make recommendations on such matters as discipline, performance assessments, terminations, layoffs, promotions, and transfers.

The incumbent also functions as one of the plant's Model Program Administrators and is responsible for (1) conducting periodic inspections in accordance with state regulations, insurance carriers' requirements, and Company Safety programs; and (2) conducting training of plant personnel in accordance with the plant's Model Program requirements.
The incumbent must keep abreast of technological improvement opportunities to recommend changes to enhance the mill operations. He/she must also be fully proficient in supervising employees in troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, preventive maintenance work, and routine equipment repairs and overhauls. He/she is also responsible for the coordination of various vendor services and capital projects under the direction of the Production Manager.
Qualifications :
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering preferred.
- 5+ years of prior papermill operations experience preferred.

- Higher level computer skills using Foxboro, ABB, Ignition, Rockwell, etc.

- Engage manufacturing professionals through significant contribution to their development and local expertise to ensure their autonomy.
- Coach local teams with equipment issues (troubleshooting) to ensure their continuous learning.
- Contribute root cause analysis and corrective action recommendation when inefficiencies are identified, and failures are experienced.
- Analyze the monthly and quarterly corrective actions and major losses to assist plants in prioritizing action plans to reduce and eliminate technical obstacles.

The Opportunity:
As OMC, Paper Mill you will be responsible for ensuring the continuity of operating assets, achieving department objectives for equipment reliability and maintenance budgets, and facilitating sound business decisions regarding the requirements for equipment maintenance versus productivity goals. You will provide support to the Department Managers, Production Supervisors, Maintenance and Operation Supervisors, and the Maintenance Planners for the coordination required to maintain and ensure operating reliability. Overall, you will serve as the liaison between maintenance and production to effectively communicate and schedule planned maintenance work orders.
How you will impact Smurfit WestRock:
* Screen and approve all work orders in SAP for asset area to ensure job priority and efficient utilization of maintenance resources
* Monitor maintenance schedules to ensure there is no conflict with operation or production schedules
* Prioritize non-emergency and break-in work order requests to approve and reject, review complete work orders, and produce schedule for the next day/week
* Serve as the project originator for maintenance capital in asset area, including documentation and troubleshooting maintenance issues
* Plan and schedule any installation and startup of new equipment to minimize the disruption of normal operations
* Serve as critical member to the Operations Department team representing the interest of the group in all work activities both internal and external to the mill
* Partner with E&I and Mechanical Maintenance Supervisors to review work requests to determine feasibility and safety controls for work to be performed
* Facilitate daily meetings with Maintenance Planners and Maintenance and Operations Managers, reviewing upcoming work requests, weekly scheduling, and outage planning
* Provide technical support and problem-solving techniques to Operations and Maintenance
* Support and foster safety and environmental compliance
* Responsible for conducting business with integrity and respect, being accountable, and actively pursuing excellence to help achieve Smurfit WestRocku2019s Path to One goals
What you need to succeed:
* High School diploma, G.E.D.
* Bacheloru2019s degree preferred
* 5-10 years of experience in Pulp and Paper industry
* Possess computer skills utilizing Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
* Ability to utilize SAP
* Demonstrated technical and mechanical acumen
* Adept at problem-solving and identifying root cause to implement preventative methods
* Working knowledge of paper mill equipment, processes, and language used to describe such in this industry
* Ability to work within a 24/7 mill operations facility
* Be a strategic thinker with the confidence to make decisions which impact safety, operations, and productivity
* Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple competing priorities
* Strong communication skills with ability to adjust communication style and interact across all levels of the organization

How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:
Safety
- Responsible for the overseeing of the safety performance of the business unit
- Ensures adequate follow up and investigation for incidents within the business unit
- Supports Mill Safety Leadership Team
Quality
- Ensures conformance to the established quality management system
- Participates in the resolution of customer concerns and quality issues
Cost/Business
- Develops annual operating plans and objectives with management
- Provides leadership to business unit to operate to plan
- Participates in the long term strategic planning of the business unit
- Develops the business unit annual capital plan with Mill Operations, Engineering and Maintenance
- Participates in the engineering and design of business unit capital projects
- Sponsors the approved capital spending within the business unit
- Participates in the negotiations of short and long term agreements
Production/Operations
- Participates in line outage planning to insure thorough planning and successful execution of the outage to plan

Leadership
- Provides business unit leadership and direction for the business unit activities utilizing the assigned and aligned resources.

What you need:
The successful candidate will have a BS degree in related field such as Chemical Engineering or Pulp and Paper science; minimum five years' experience in pulp and paper industry or HS diploma with minimum of 15 years of experience in multiple papermills. Demonstrated computer competency.

Compensation Range: $159,375 - $215,625
The above range represents the expected base salary for this position. The actual salary may vary based upon several factors including, but not limited to relevant skills and experience, credentials for the position, time in an applicable role, and geographic location.
