**Job Summary:**
The Pathologists' Assistant (PA) acts as a provider of anatomic pathology services and has specialized knowledge which includes describing, dissecting, and submitting samples of human surgical and autopsy specimens for review and diagnosis by a pathologist. The PA-Academic is the main resource for pathology residents' training in the grossing laboratory as well as the autopsy suite. It is also the role of the PA-Academic to continuously interact, assist, and consult with the faculty and staff pathologists to provide support to their roles as diagnosticians.
**Job Responsibilities and Requirements:**
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Educates pathology residents in the grossing laboratory, autopsy suite, and other areas as required.
+ Maintains specimen identification integrity at all times.
+ Performs gross examination and dictation of surgical and autopsy specimens.
+ Maintains instrumentation as needed in all areas of anatomic pathology.
+ Assists in the organization and coordination of operations in surgical pathology and autopsy pathology.
+ Maintains accreditation standard requirements in all areas of anatomic pathology.
+ Collects and maintains data for the department and reports on quality performance for anatomic pathology as required.
+ May perform administrative and clerical duties as needed.
+ Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.

Summary:
This position will perform specific tasks and duties under the direction and supervision of a licensed Pathologist.
Responsibilities:
1. Ensure appropriate specimen accessioning and obtain clinical history as indicated.
2. Assist with gross description, dissect surgical specimens and prepare tissue for processing.
3. Assist pathologists in frozen section preparation and in the procurement of FNA specimens.
4. Obtain biological specimens for analysis and perform special procedures.
5. Photograph pertinent gross specimens and microscopic slides.
6. Perform duties relating to the administrative maintenance of surgical pathology protocols, reports, departmental conferences and data, including filing of reports, protocols, photographic & microscopic slides.

9. Collects and analyzes data for performance improvement monitors & presents findings at the PI meeting.

To assist the pathologist in dissecting and describing all surgical pathology specimens for histological processing. Under the direction of the pathologist, the pathologist assistant is responsible for the management of laboratory testing in the designated sections. This position requires intimate knowledge of the department and policies/procedures relevant to the delivery of pathology services. The ability to retrieve, communicate or otherwise present information in a written, auditory, or visual fashion is essential. The ability to work well with others and coordinate efforts, the ability to accurately judge the need for consultation regarding appropriate specimen dissections, and the ability to establish and maintain professional, cooperative relationships with surgical and pathology staff. This position consistently supports compliance and Kaiser Permanente's Code of Conduct by adhering to federal, state and local laws and regulations, accreditation and licenser requirements and Kaiser Permanentes policies and procedures. + Clarifies, resolves, and documents issues involving inadequate grossing/additional tissue submission, context of gross description in pathology reports, tissue block discordance, or other concerns arising associated with the gross dissection of a case.
+ Maintains all associated instrumentation and applicable properties associated with the physical area of gross dissection, performs formalin monitoring, keeps grossing area stocked with applicable necessary supplies and in clean, working order.
+ Assists in the evaluation and development of new procedures, methods, quality assurance monitors, and instrumentation.
+ Assists with cutting and processing frozen section slides whenever necessary.
+ Assists with processing, cutting and staining of histology slides when necessary.
+ Assist with accessioning specimens when necessary.
+ Maintains a clear open channel of communication with the Pathologists via all applicable methodology (phone and internet).
