Weekend/Holidays
Prepares pharmaceuticals for dispensing in accordance with hospital policy standards of practice, and applicable state and federal regulations.
1. Provides orientation/training of employees to job role to quality standards, and to hospital facilities and goals.
2. Fulfills purchasing and procurement responsibilities as needed.
3. Completes thorough Medication Reconciliation process for admitted patients as assigned.
4. Prioritizes workload so that tasks are completed in an efficient manner; keeps patient care the number one priority.
5. Meets deadlines in special projects and daily responsibilities; demonstrates a "need no reminders" attitude; keeps informed of project status.
6. Prepares sterile products (IV admixtures, nutritional admixtures, oncology admixtures, irrigation solution, ophthalmic preparations, injectable medications, etc.) using aseptic technique.
7. Correctly uses Mobile Isolation Chamber and performs proper cleaning and maintenance procedures. After checked by registered pharmacist, delivers medications to the Nursing Unit as needed.
8. Performs all necessary calculations and conversions in the preparation of medications and determines correct dosage. Has work verified by registered pharmacist.
9. Compounds and prepares pharmaceuticals for dispensing. Has work verified by a registered pharmacist.
10. Demonstrates involvement in unit by attending 50% of staff/committee meetings and in services for area.
11. Maintains Pharmacy Department and work area in neat and orderly manner; cleans department and work area on own initiative.
12. Inspects Pharmacy inventory to ensure that pharmaceuticals are reordered when necessary and that items that are outdated are removed and replaced.
13. Is familiar with the usual dose or dosage ranges, administration, required accessory labeling and generic and brand names, routes of warnings, storage conditions, and available dosage forms of the most commonly prescribed drugs.
14. Reviews Nursing Unit's inventory as assigned monthly for proper medication dates, quantity, storage, rotation of stock supplies and overall conditions as assigned.
15. Has a working understanding of The Joint Commission MM Standards and their application to health system pharmacy.
16. Effectively utilizes barcode controls to decrease errors. Always scans the product when possible.
17. Maintains current knowledge of profession through reading journals, attending meetings, or CEU's to maintain certification.
**Education:** Formal Education and Training - Diploma or GED required.
Informal or Continuing Education - As appropriate to maintain knowledge and skill.
**Experience:** Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required.
Prior experience, as a pharmacy technician is desired. Prior experience in IV admixture and quality control is desired. Keyboarding skills required. Experience in operating computer system required.
**Certifications/Licensure:** Registered as a Certified Pharmacy Technician by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or National Healthcareer Association required; or if registered by a state board as an active pharmacy technician, must obtain registered status by the PTCB or NHA within 6 months of hire.

Operational Duties and Responsibilities
Pharmacy Technicians perform ONLY non-judgmental technical duties under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
Prepares drug orders per physician request according to established policies, procedures, and protocols - Verifies computerized patient medication records accurately. Maintains, accurate, complete patient drug record. Compounds non-sterile pharmaceuticals. Provides services efficiently and in a timely fashion.
Issues controlled substances to patient care areas and maintains records as required by law and institutional policies.
Verifies the daily activities of the department are complete and recorded.
Maintains competency required for current job title/position
Maintains current technician license. Ensures applicable CE records and licensure are maintained in department files. Attends staff meetings.
Completes all competency/skills assessment requirements.
Specialty area - Serves as the technician in specialty areas such as the operating room or pharmacy work areas outside the central pharmacy.
Ambulatory care - Provides ambulatory pharmaceutical care services as assigned such as but not limited to anticoagulation clinics, intensive medical home, transition of care, Discharge Medication reconciliation, etc.
Retail - Performs outpatient distributive functions related to entering prescriptions orders, selecting the correct medications for new and refilled prescription orders, and coordinates delivery of medications for patient pick-up or delivery.
Clinical Duties and Responsibilities
Ensures safe, appropriate, cost-effective drug therapies for patients according to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
Reads, extracts, and interprets information in patient medical records accurately.
Detects and reports suspected adverse drug reactions accurately and in a timely manner.
Coordinates pharmacist drug education to patients and their families per institutional protocol.
Participates in the quality improvement and medication use review activities of the department. Collects data, conducts monitors and inspections, and maintains logs, records and other documentation as assigned.
Provides services efficiently and in a timely fashion.

Potential for exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including chemotherapeutic, cytotoxic drugs and cleaning solutions), sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items.

This is a PRN as-needed position, you must be available to work at least 12 hours bi-weekly, as needed according to departmental demands. Education: High School Degree or GED is required.
