**Job Description: Phlebotomist**
A Phlebotomist plays a vital role in the healthcare system by ensuring blood samples are collected accurately and efficiently, which is crucial for diagnosing and treating patients. Phlebotomists often work in various healthcare settings like hospitals/clinics, diagnostic laboratories, blood donation centers, and research institutions.
Responsibilities
Job responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
· Drawing blood from patients using a variety of techniques such as venipuncture, finger sticks, or heel sticks
· Ensuring proper identification and labeling of blood samples
· Using sterile needles, syringes, and other necessary equipment
· Greeting and preparing patients for blood draws
· Explaining the blood draw procedure to patients and addressing any concerns or questions
· Providing a calm and reassuring presence to help patients relax, especially those who may be nervous or fearful
· Ensuring samples are handled properly and transported to the lab efficiently
· Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of the work area and equipment
· Following safety protocols to avoid contamination and maintain sample integrity
· Accurately recording all relevant patient information and maintain detailed records
· Ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
· Performing data entry tasks related to blood collection
· Working closely with other healthcare professionals such as nurses, doctors, and lab technicians
· Communicating effectively with the medical team to provide necessary updates on patient statuses and sample collections
· Participating in team meetings and providing feedback or suggestions for improving procedures
Skills and Qualifications
· High school diploma or equivalent
· Certification from an accredited phlebotomy training program (requirements vary by region)
· CPR certification may be required
· Proficiency in blood collection techniques and tools
· Good understanding of medical terminology and anatomy
· Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) software
· Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Education and Experience:
- Graduation from an accredited training program resulting in certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), Health and Human Services or American Medical Certification.
- The phlebotomist technician's experience shall be a minimum of 3 years' phlebotomy experience
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). Health and Human Services of American Medical Certification.
- A degree or certificate of graduation from an approved/accredited training program.
- Properly identifying and label specimens.
- Maintaining sanitary standards to prevent the transmission of disease.
- Selecting and implementing the proper, age-appropriate collection techniques.
- Ensuring that samples are properly prepared for laboratory analysis.
- Sending specimens to the correct testing locations.
- Updating patient records.
- Ensure compliance with standard of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the medical treatment MTF and IAW JC guidelines. Provides care within ethical and legal boundaries.
- Complete orientation and competency verification programs in accordance with unit guidelines.
- When assigned, will serve, and participate in committees, functions, and other meetings. Provide relevant and timely information and assists with decision- making and process improvement.
