**Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health New York** provides programs and services for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and dual diagnoses. Located at our Day Academy in Highland, NY, this position develops and revises physical educational curriculum to meet the physical, emotional, creative, and educational needs of assigned students by preparing course outlines and lesson plans as required by guideline policies. The PE Teacher will:
+ Evaluate students' level of proficiency to prescribe suitable programming and evaluate their progress in meeting educational and social goals by testing, observation, behavior rating scales and other means as appropriate.
+ Responsible for preparing Individual Education Plans for each student in physical education, involving an evaluation of each child's total program and preparation of annual goals for each child, and evaluation and revision throughout the year according to the student's progress, as well as meeting with parents /agencies during parent-teacher conferences as assigned.
+ Establish a safe environment conducive to maximum academic and social learning by maintaining order and guiding students to socially appropriate behavior.

**Qualifications**
**EDUCATION:** Bachelor's Degree and New York State Certification in Physical Education, K-12.
**EXPERIENCE:** Two years experience working with mentally and/or emotionally handicapped individuals is preferred.
**PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:** Free of dependency and abuse of illegal or illicit drugs, alcohol, inhalants or otherchemical or controlled substances. Significant, prolonged, and frequent amounts of walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, and lifting of 70 lbs. or more. Using standard crisis intervention procedures must be able to singlehandedly effect the initial restraint of children and adolescents weighing between 75 and 150 lbs. Possible exposure to blood borne pathogens.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred

Position Description: The K-8 Physical Education teacher will be responsible for planning and implementing high quality instruction to all students in their specific content area. Physical Requirements: Light Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects; Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pushing and pulling.
Terms of Employment: Salary & benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. The salary range for certified teachers starts at $51,300. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.

- Maintain accurate and complete records as required; maintain the confidentiality of student records and student information. Complete any documentation necessary for the academy to be in compliance with regulatory requirements, such as time and effort reporting.
- Communicate with parents and make provisions for being available outside normal hours; work with parents to encourage participation in their child’s learning experiences; provide regular communication to parents regarding their children’s performance.
- Maintain professional competence via conferences, mentoring, involvement in professional organizations, continuing coursework, etc. Complete all coursework and other requirements necessary to maintain teaching credentials and "highly qualified" status, as required by the teacher's assignment.
- Inform the school leader of needed instructional resources. Serve as an active member of teams such as grade-level, school-wide planning, school improvement or other areas of focus.
- May participate in extracurricular activities such as coaching, clubs, student government, tutoring, enrichment activities, etc.
- Other duties as assigned.
State teacher licensure/certification with appropriate endorsements(s).
- Bachelor’s degree with subject area emphasis and/or coursework and/or experience necessary to be deemed "highly qualified" for the grade/subjects to be taught. (Will consider non-certified applicants with a degree in the subject area to be taught; would be required to complete a plan of action to become "highly qualified" within a prescribed period of time.)
- Demonstrated commitment to young people’s learning success and achievement.

Provide high-quality instruction to students and work collaboratively with the school leader, colleagues, students, parents and the board to accomplish or surpass the academy's articulated educational goals. Work as a collaborative team member to implement the academy curriculum and accomplish short- and long-term academic goals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning; develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure; enforce the academy's student discipline code; collaborate in the implementation of initiatives such as school-wide behavior management systems.
