Utilities Pipeline Technician

Description:
The Utilities Pipeline Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing sewer and wastewater pipelines. Work involves the use of various hand tools and equipment such as picks, shovels, saws, wrenches, jackhammers, basin hooks, and sewer corks to install and maintain sewer laterals, main lines, and manholes. The role also includes stocking and maintaining the crew truck and operating vehicles such as pickup trucks, single-axle dump trucks, and tandem dump trucks to travel to work locations in response to service requests. Additional responsibilities include setting up work zones, closing roads, and flagging to ensure safety for motorists and coworkers.

This position also performs routine maintenance and repairs to ensure safe and proper operation of sanitary and combined sewer infrastructure, installs piping and fittings, operates small equipment and machinery, performs inspections, responds to work orders, assembles materials and tools, and transports personnel to and from worksites.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install, repair, and replace sewer/wastewater pipes, valves, and related equipment.

  • Guide equipment operators during excavation after buried utilities are located.

  • Flag work zones with signage and cones to ensure public and worker safety.

  • Drive commercial vehicles to and from job sites to transport materials and equipment.

  • Stock and maintain work trucks with necessary supplies.

  • Communicate with citizens regarding repairs and concerns.

Minimum Training and Experience:

  • High School diploma, GED, or specialized vocational training.

  • One year of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Licensing/Certifications:

  • Class B Commercial Drivers License required within 6 months of hire.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform NDE (UT, MT) inspections as required by customer in accordance with customer / TIRNDE written procedures.
  • Set up and calibrate nondestructive testing equipment.
  • Document all inspections on the appropriate NDE reports and review prior to submitting to TIR QA.
  • Compare results with available ILI data and report findings.
  • Organize and report test results
  • Maintain close working relationship with construction crews and field personnel.
  • Perform pipe to soil readings, soil resistivity, MIC test, coating inspections as required by customer.
  • Provide training oversight for level I technicians.
  • Maintain continual communication with client representative (chief inspector, site inspector, integrity engineers)
  • Ensure all activities are performed in a safe and professional manner. Adhere to and enforce TIR safety policies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Level II Certification in UT and MT with Laser Scanner experience.
  • Experience in PAUT, Laser Scanner, AUT, or PMI.
  • Minimum of 2 years Pipeline Integrity experience, 5 years of experience recommended.
  • Ability to provide personal 4x4 vehicle.

  • Performing or assisting with routine maintenance of pumps and electric motors such as bearing and seal replacements, alignments, couplings, sumps, fans, drain piping modifications, etc.
