You will design and develop algorithms that enable our manipulator arms to swiftly and safely manipulate and unload packages. What You'll Accomplish:
    • Design, implement, and optimize motion planning algorithms for an autonomous robotic manipulator.
    • Research and develop cutting edge techniques to enhance the safety and speed of our robot.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate your contributions into the broader hardware and software system.
    • Iterate, test, and tune solutions to improve performance and reliability of the mobile manipulation system, both in simulation and on a real robotic system.
    • Play a key role in designing and contributing to the architecture of scalable software systems that support the deployment of multiple robots in diverse and dynamic environments.
    • Act as a mentor to other software engineers to improve the team's overall capabilities in planning and manipulation.
Who You Are:
    • A software engineer with a Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Mechatronics or similar field and at least 3-5 years of industrial experience or a Masters Degree or higher with relevant mix of academic and industrial experience in working with autonomous robots.
    • Experienced with motion planning for robotic manipulators, with a strong understanding of dynamics.
    • Experience with computational geometry and fast collision checking is a plus.
    • Experienced in working with complex algorithms and capable of optimizing for performance and reliability.
    • Proficient in Python.
    • Experience in other relevant languages is a plus.
    • Collaborative and communicative, focusing discussions on problem solving ideas and experiments to drive product innovation.
    • Detail-oriented, but with a system level mindset. Capable of debugging complex problems while maintaining system integrity.
    • Willing to work in-office from our Cambridge, MA location at least three days per week.
    • Adaptable and eager to learn, staying up to date with the latest advancements in robotics and motion planning.

We're looking for someone who has:
  • A passion for tackling challenging planning problems involving a wide array of vehicles
  • 3+ years of experience building production software using modern software practices
  • Experience developing planning solutions for autonomous vehicles or other mobile robots
  • Fluency in writing modern, high-performance C++ code
  • Enthusiasm for coming up with practical solutions to cutting-edge challenges in a fast-paced environment
Nice to have:
  • A MSc or PhD in computer science or applied mathematics with coursework or research experience in planning
  • Experience writing safety-critical C++ software
  • Hands-on experience developing and testing planning algorithms on an autonomous vehicle

Compensation at Applied Intuition for eligible roles includes base salary, equity, and benefits. Base salary is a single component of the total compensation package, which may also include equity in the form of options and/or restricted stock units, comprehensive health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance coverage, 401k retirement benefits with employer match, learning and wellness stipends, and paid time off. Applied Intuition pay ranges reflect the minimum and maximum intended target base salary for new hire salaries for the position. The Autonomous Driving Software (ADS) Development team in Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is an engineering and data science team that focuses on improving performance and expanding ADAS features and services of Hyundai/Kia/Genesis vehicles for the North American (NA) market. The team's key roles and responsibilities are:

  • New Technology Introduction to spearhead new technology conceptualization for future generation ADAS/AD experiences for the NA market through in-house development as well as strategic partnerships with key technology hubs such as universities, startups and research labs
  • Software Development to expand Hyundai/Kia/Genesis ADAS/AD capabilities in coordination with the R&D Headquarters and other internal/external project partners
  • Prototyping and Demonstration to develop prototypes and proof of concept demonstrations to various global teams within Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) for new ADAS/AD functions targeted for the NA market
  • Software Strategy and Planning to identify market trends and customer needs for key ADAS/AD experience themes and selection of new concept ideas
  • Data Collection and Curation for Production Applications to support development of data-driven machine learning models with NA data.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
We are looking for a talented and driven Senior Planning and Control Software Engineer with a strong background in control theory and motion planning to help shape the future of ADAS technologies. This role focuses on developing real-time decision-making systems using advanced control techniques and path planning strategies to ensure safe, smooth, and reliable autonomous vehicle behavior in complex driving environments.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead advanced development and prototyping of new ADAS experiences specialized for the NA market in areas such as L2+/L3 automated driving, automated towing and hitching, automated parking, and automated path adjustment for collision avoidance.

  • Lead planning and control algorithm development to build, simulate and test new software stack to enable new ADAS experiences, improve production software modules to enhance existing Hyundai/Kia/Genesis ADAS suite
  • Drive definition of automated driving test scenarios and design verification methods, work with software integration, simulation and test engineers to conduct comprehensive testing and validation of algorithms
  • Lead / support strategic partnerships with external technology hubs (universities, research labs, startups, suppliers) to develop innovative solutions in the following areas: planning, control, prediction, perception, localization
  • Work with simulation and test engineers to develop data analysis tools and scripts to evaluate performance and robustness of new feature prototypes and production application software using test and field data
  • Regularly interface with technical experts and subject matter experts from the R&D Headquarters in South Korea to establish and maintain a collaborative relationship with our global partners

WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • B.S, M.S or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a similar engineering discipline
  • 2+ years of industry experience (including internship/co-op experience) in relevant fields
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle dynamics, classical and modern control methods, and motion planning algorithms for robotics or autonomous driving
  • Strong programming skills in Python, MATLAB/Simulink or C++

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Automotive Engineering, Autonomous Driving, Robotics, Aerospace Engineering or a similar discipline
  • 3+ years of industry experience in ADAS controls software development
  • Technical expertise in more advanced control topics such as MPC, CLF, CBF, and path planning algorithms such as A*, RRTs, APFs etc.
  • Experience with model-based algorithm design in simulation and testing environments (MATLAB/Simulink, dSPACE, CARLA, CarSim, CarMaker, etc.)
  • Familiarity with vehicle kinematic and dynamic models for low-speed and high-speed driving conditions
  • Experience initiating and leading research partnerships with universities, research labs or startups

  • Experience with vehicle software development standards and processes

Required Qualifications
  • BS, MS, or PhD in Robotics, Machine Learning, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or related field
  • 3+ years of applied industry experience demonstrating strong programming and software design skills in C++, especially in low latency or real-time environments
  • Experience in designing, building, and productionizing motion planning algorithms (cost function design, optimization and sampling-based techniques), state estimation algorithms, or statistical techniques
Desirable Qualifications
  • Expertise with GPU or ML toolkits such as CUDA, PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, and/or TensorRT

The base salary range for this position is $116K - $174K per year. Aurora's pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, the successful candidate's starting base pay will be determined based on factors including job-related skills, experience, qualifications, relevant education or training, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future. The successful candidate will also be eligible for an annual bonus, equity compensation, and benefits.
