Job Summary: Our office in Chicago, IL is seeking a Plumbing Engineer to work in a fast-paced multi-discipline team environment. Our Plumbing Engineers are responsible for designing building plumbing systems and producing plumbing construction documentation for commercial, residential, mixed-use, and institutional projects, including hotels, apartment buildings, retail/commercial spaces, and educational facilities.


Responsibilities

  • Plumbing and piping system design including domestic/potable water system design, domestic hot water systems design, sanitary sewer system design and storm water system design.
  • Plumbing engineering calculations, equipment sizing and selection, system layout and coordination.
  • Reading and understanding construction documents, floor plans, specifications and equipment details.
  • Drawing production and Building Information Modeling (BIM) for plumbing systems.
  • Applying knowledge of building codes and industry standards.
  • Writing and editing specifications, reports, narratives and surveys.
  • Coordination with other internal disciplines.


Qualifications And Experience

To succeed in this role, you need to meet the following basic requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with Plumbing emphasis or equivalent industry experience.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in plumbing and piping system engineering and design.
  • Ability to operate AutoCAD and RevitTM BIM software.
  • Detailed knowledge of building codes and industry standards.
  • Efficient in MS Office, Outlook, and engineering calculation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Creative thinker with effective teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced multi-discipline team environment.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks effectively in the face of shifting projects and deadlines.

Compensation & Benefits

The expected base salary range for this role is $75,000 - $90,000 USD per year. Actual compensation will be determined based on a number of factors including skills, experience, qualifications, and location.

Your Impact
+ With minimal supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, schematics, data, technical drawings, computer-generated reports, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
+ Perform basic professional plumbing engineering work relating to conducting research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, resources, building, infrastructure, and usage; and installing plumbing, fire protection and suppression, and fluid flow systems to conform with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
+ Assist with the development of technologies, monitoring devices, modeling techniques, design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies to account for the proper installation and functioning of equipment and systems according to specifications; implementing future-ready solutions with plumbing engineering design standards.
+ Write technical reports summarizing research and specifications with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using sketches, calculations, electronic systems, spreadsheets, technical drawings, and software.
+ Assist technical staff and project managers with risk identification and assessment, offering input and analysis with design concepts, construction, mitigation and improvement activities and projects.
+ Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.

Job Summary:

The Plumbing Engineer will engage in all phases of a project from inception to completion of construction. This involvement is intended to grow individuals and nurture design talents


In this role, you will:

  • Design plumbing systems including Healthcare/Life Sciences/Multifamily.
  • Oversee the preparation of technical drawings, specifications of plumbing systems and topographical maps.
  • Lead project teams and serve as the primary contact for discipline with clients.
  • Prepare specifications for purchases of materials and equipment.

Your Impact
+ Collect, compile, and analyze data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, schematics, data, technical drawings, computer-generated reports, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
+ Perform professional plumbing engineering work and conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, resources, building, infrastructure, and usage; and installing plumbing systems to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits. Preference is extensive medical gas design.
+ Participate in incorporating advanced technology, modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies to account for the proper installation and functioning of equipment and systems according to specifications; implementing future-ready solutions with plumbing engineering design standards.
+ Work as an individual or as part of a cross-functional team of engineers, planners, and professionals to execute project work, assist with laying out installation of equipment, calculating costs and quantities of material/equipment/labor, and ensuring project work conforms with specifications, permit applications, schematics, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos.
+ Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, sketches, calculations, technical drawings, spreadsheets, and illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.
+ Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements and calculations, statistical analysis, and reporting.
+ Assist with development and scoping of small- to medium-sized projects.
+ Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations that explain research and findings to improve, prevent, control, restore, or address design and/or construction issues or problems.
+ Conduct engineering studies and surveys to gain further information on a particular design and construction problem or issue and/or to plan for future needs.
+ Assist in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of data obtained during site investigations, offering input with developing action plans for low to mid-level risk mitigation activities.
+ Work collaboratively with other engineers, architects, and building authorities on a Federal, State, regional, and local level. Preference is a relationship with AHCA.
+ Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
+ Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
**Required Qualifications**
+ Bachelor's Degree in Plumbing or Mechanical Engineering, or closely related discipline or significant years of experience in the plumbing industry
+ 5 to 7 years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline and prior plumbing and mechanical design experience. Experience with medical gas design is preferred.
+ Engineer in Training Certification.
+ Knowledge of plumbing and mechanical engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to project work-related issues.
+ Experience with building and infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; including rehabilitation and new design.
+ Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements. Experience with AHCA is preferred.
+ Knowledge of relevant plumbing and mechanical system and construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
+ Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
+ Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
+ Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
+ Moderate proficiency with technical writing, automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
+ Experience with discipline-specific design software (i.e., Revit, AutoCAD).
+ Critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, load calculations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
+ Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
+ Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
+ Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ Licensed Professional Engineer.

**The opportunity**

**Is this role right for you?**
+ Bachelor's degree in mechanical, architectural, civil, or environmental engineering.
+ Minimum 8 years' experience in the design and specification of plumbing and fire protection systems required.
+ Familiarity with codes and standards, specifically UPC, IPC, IBC, ASPE standards, LEED water efficiency, TDSHS, FGI and NFPA.
+ Experience designing a variety of building types which may include offices, hotels, hospitals, laboratories, and high-rise buildings.
