The Department of Poultry Science is looking for a student to assist with daily operations in the Fortenberry Processing Plant at the Charles C. Miller Jr. Poultry Research and Education Center.
**Essential Functions**
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
+ Maintain cleanliness and organization of poultry processing plant on a daily basis
+ Clean and sanitize equipment and workspaces after daily projects
+ Assist in the setup, operation, and breakdown of poultry processing equipment in order to support research, teaching, and extension projects
+ Prep for and participate in poultry processing trials, which can include any of the following activities: live receiving, live hang, first processing, evisceration, chilling, cut-up, further processing, cooking, and packaging
+ Assist faculty, staff, students, and visitors with on-site research, teaching, and extension activities as needed
+ Assist maintenance technician with processing plant equipment preventative maintenance as needed
+ Assist with supply inventory

Under general supervision, the Animal Husbandry Technician is responsible for performing basic animal husbandry and facility sanitation as prescribed by federal laws and regulations, and for observing, reporting, and monitoring the health and comfort of animals.

The Binding Site VT specializes in the production of polyclonal antibodies, primarily in sheep, and is a subsidiary of a larger diagnostic company based in England. We currently have a full-time, 40-hour position available for an Animal Husbandry Technician on our USDA registered sheep farm and laboratory in Benson, VT.

This full time role will participate in and carry out all aspects of animal husbandry and welfare across both sites. They will be required to work both independently and as a team to meet the demands of animal welfare/husbandry across two farms and will ensure that the welfare is maintained to a high standard at all times. They'll need to follow treatment policies and ensure they are up to date with current standard process. We are seeking a Supervisor to join our Insourcing Solutions team, located at Boston's Children's Hospital. You will be working with multiple animal species.
Under the direction of the Manager, Animal Care, this position provides direction and leadership for the daily operations of Boston Children's Hospital animal facilities and program. Maintains performance levels consistent with and according to Animal Resources Children's Hospital (ARCH) standards and requirements. Collaborates with the veterinary staff to ensure that the health and welfare of laboratory animals are maintained in compliance with local, state, federal and institutional guidelines and regulations. Responsible for providing back up and assistance for the Manager, Animal Care.
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified.
+ Responsible for assisting in the training of animal care staff in the following: cage changing, microisolator cage changing techniques, room sanitation, autoclave operation, cagewash operations, waste disposal and other husbandry duties as required.

+ Collaborates with Animal Facility Manager and maintains necessary supply and equipment inventory to operate the day-to-day operation of the animal care program, including feed/bedding, sanitation supplies, office supplies, cage equipment, autoclave supplies and other supplies and equipment as needed.
+ Responsible for developing and maintaining animal records including, room logs, health reports, cage card labels, autoclave records, cagewash records, animal census and other records as required.
+ Ensures that all animal rooms are observed on a daily basis to monitor for sick, or dead animals, and reports findings to the veterinary staff or alternatively to the Animal Facility Manager.
+ Interviews and recommends selection of candidates for employment to the Animal Facility Manager. In consultation with the Animal Facility Manager and Human Resources Manager, this position performs personnel actions including but not limited to hiring, transferring, suspending, counseling, disciplining, discharging, assigning, rewarding or addressing employee concerns.
+ Supervises direct reports in their efforts to maintain quality performance of departmental and client objectives, including meeting/exceeding departmental standards with respect to animal health and welfare, facilities condition, sanitation levels.
+ Build competence among employees through conducting appropriate training activities and through appropriate supervision related activities (e.g. recruitment, separation, performance appraisal, disciplinary actions, etc.).

+ Conducts daily inspections of animal holding and support facilities to determine the degree to which established levels of animal health, facilities condition, sanitation levels, environmental parameters and security are being met/exceeded.
+ Participates in the development and implementation of site-specific standard operating procedures (SOP's), in compliance with all state, federal and industry requirements. Oversee adherence to site SOP's and all required documentation related to department. Coordinate operations with the assistance of staff support departments and personnel.

+ Trains and oversees consistent practice of general Children's Hospital safety policies and procedures, including those related to biohazards and radioactive substances. Supervises in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
+ In coordination with Human Resources Manager, investigates personnel problems and to employees in accordance with company policies and procedures.
+ Maintains required attendance level and adherence to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that assigned duties are completed.
+ Assists in any contract related activity, as assigned by Supervisor, to complete the required work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
To qualify for this role, you must have one of the following combinations of education/experience:
+ High school diploma/General education development plus six plus years husbandry experience in a laboratory animal facility of which six to twelve months is leadership experience.
+ Bachelor or Associate degree plus two-four years husbandry experience in a laboratory animal facility of which six to twelve months is leadership experience.
+ _Certification/Licensure: AALAS Certification at the ALAT level preferred._

The Binding Site VT specializes in the production of polyclonal antibodies, primarily in sheep, and is a subsidiary of a larger diagnostic company based in England. We currently have a full-time, 40-hour position available for an Animal Husbandry Technician on our USDA registered sheep farm and laboratory in Benson, VT.
**Discover Impactful Work:**
This full time role will participate in and carry out all aspects of animal husbandry and welfare across both sites. They will be required to work both independently and as a team to meet the demands of animal welfare/husbandry across two farms and will ensure that the welfare is maintained to a high standard at all times. They'll need to follow treatment policies and ensure they are up to date with current standard process. All of their work is carried out in accordance with USDA, IACUC protocol, animal welfare act, health and safety, and animal welfare procedures and guidelines, as well as company policies and standards.
**A Day in the Life:**
+ Carry out daily feeding regimes of all animals on the farm
+ Routine and non-routine animal treatments
+ Participate in animal sorting or movement
+ Participate in herding and transfer of animals between farm sites
+ Participate in the breeding/lambing program
+ Assist in keeping all housing buildings to USDA standards

Primary Job Purpose:
As the Attendant: Research Technician Support you will provide care for animals, the sanitation and maintenance of equipment of the facility, and you will learn to assist with routine basic study activities to provide assistance to our research team.
This position will routinely be standing, moving, and lifting for extended periods of time. Day to day activities include physical work such as sanitizing/decontaminating areas of cat and dog urine and excrement, as well as cleaning/sanitizing caging and accessory equipment (toys, feed/water bowls, enrichment items).
Job Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide basic animal care for study animals, including animals housed under barrier conditions, according to prescribed procedures and instructions, such as:
- Feeding and watering animals.
- Cleaning and sanitation of animal rooms, cages, and facilities.
- Transferring animals, equipment, and supplies.
- Assist with grooming, bathing, or exercising animals.
- Begin training to provide routine assistance in study activities, common technical procedures, and record keeping responsibilities, following prescribed procedures and instructions, such as:
- Handling and restraining animals as directed.
- Observing animals regularly, recognizing and reporting changes in eating or drinking habits, and general behavior and outward signs of abnormalities.

- Husbandry or lab animal technician experience is a plus but not necessary.

- The employee is required to communicate effectively by talking, listening, reading, and writing in a professional manner.
- At all times, be sober and clear of influence of any substances including alcohol and legal recreational drugs, which may affect the ability of user, safety of animals and other staff members, and work quality in any manner.
