As the **Process Controls Engineer** , you will be responsible for improving plant performance, reliability, and safety through the application of advanced instrumentation, control systems, and automation technologies. This role combines process optimization with project execution, supporting both day-to-day operations and long-term improvements. The engineer will lead and support control system projects from concept through startup, while also providing technical expertise in troubleshooting, training, and system reliability.

**Support ESH Compliance:**
+ Support site safety and environmental efforts through control system design and monitoring
+ Ensure compliance with ES&H and cGMP requirements
+ Conduct ES&H project reviews as needed
+ Establish/maintain critical alarms and interlocks
**Process Control and Optimization:**
+ Identify and implement control strategies to improve process stability, efficiency and product quality
+ Support and maintain DCS, PLC and HMI systems
+ Specify and support installation and maintenance of field instrumentation, final control elements and control hardware
+ Develop and maintain alarm management systems and critical interlocks
+ Support troubleshooting and root cause analysis using control system data and historian tools
+ Evaluate and recommend new technologies to enhance control capabilities
+ Integrate and manage data analytics and modeling tools to support process insights and continuous improvement
+ Assist in managing and expanding the PI data historian
+ Provide training and mentoring to operations and maintenance personnel on control systems and strategy
**Project Development and Execution:**
+ Lead and support instrumentation and control projects from concept through startup
+ Develop project scopes, functional definitions and cost estimates
+ Coordinate with internal teams and external contractors to ensure timely and cost-effective execution
+ Ensure compliance with engineering standards, safety regulations and documentation requirements
+ Participate in capital planning and control system migration strategies
**What skills and experience do I need to be successful in this role?**
+ B.S. in Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical or Controls Engineering preferred
+ Strong understanding of process control principles and industrial automation
+ Experience with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix PLCs, Inductive Automation Ignition HMI, Microsoft Windows-based server environments and virtual machines, field instrumentation and industrial networking
+ Proficiency in programming and scripting (e.g. ladder, structured text, VB, .NET, SQL)
+ Knowledge of field hardware and instrumentation.
+ Previous work in industrial manufacturing environment; chemical manufacturing preferred
+ Working knowledge of industrial electrical distribution and safety systems
+ Ability to safety exit the plant in the event of an emergency

As a Process Control Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in collaborating with various teams across our plant to set up and maintain automation in the manufacturing processes. Serving as the site expert on automation platforms, you will contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the operations. Additionally, you will assist, consult, and occasionally lead site-specific projects, demonstrating a commitment to safety and clear communication throughout the organization.
Key Functions:
* Lead, develop, and support application of process and process control best practices. Including joining with mill leadership to develop mid- and long-term process control network strategies
* Understand and share industry best practices, equipment options and proven strategies for manufacturing control systems and applications
* Proactively identify opportunities for process improvement, variability reduction and cost reduction
* Provide project and technical leadership (including training) for local and system-wide process control technology applications and PLC Technicians

**What will be expected from you?**
+ Develops and provides subject matter expertise in the effective use of process controls.
+ Maintains and updates the control narratives, complex control logic and process safety system narratives.

**What are we looking for in the ideal candidate?**
+ Preferred bachelor's degree in chemical or electrical engineering. Other qualifications in Mathematics, Engineering or other technical discipline will be considered when paired with Process Control application experience.
+ Candidate should have 3-15 years' experience in process engineering, process controls or closely related activities.
+ Prefer that candidate have experience with controls in a continuous petrochemical process. Experience with an Olefins process is a plus.
+ Prefer that candidate have experience with configuration in a distributed control system environment. Familiarity with ABB DCS is a plus.
+ Experience with process engineering in an operating environment.
+ Aptitude with computerized applications.
+ Requires 5-10% travel.

+ Understand the project delivery process and help define project scope, goals and deliverables that support business goals, mill safety, reliability, and improvement efforts.

SUMMARY
The Process Control Engineer position: provides technological and engineering expertise for the implementation of new process control technology and equipment; evaluates and resolves problems with existing process control systems utilizing vendor and/or mill maintenance support when necessary; designs and programs changes to the existing process control systems as needed. This position ensures the control systems are properly deployed to provide the greatest return on investment regarding production, costs, quality as well as safe and environmentally sound operations. The Process Control Engineer reports to the Technical Support Manager.
HOW YOU WILL IMPACT SMURFIT WESTROCK:
* Responsible for providing design, implementation, and support for existing and new Process Control systems. This includes Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCu2019s), as well as custom control applications used to meet manufacturing needs and production goals.
* Assists project engineers and managers in the planning, development, and implementation of capital projects.
* Engages in development of short and long-term planning of system upgrades and migrations.
* During project design, assists with coordinating the development of control logic and system configuration between the Operating Department and control system suppliers. Participate in factory checkout of equipment prior to delivery to confirm design and functionality.
* Assists with control system operator training.
* Maintains a strong emphasis on process improvement projects -- customer focused innovations, cost saving improvements, process optimization, etc.
* Utilizes a proactive approach and project skills to develop solutions to short and long- term issues.
* Designs and implements control system logic based on process knowledge, applicable safety and environmental requirements, operational need, and maintenance requirements that provide clearly defined benefits.
* Works closely with Maintenance and Operations to identify and resolve issues.
* Leads troubleshooting efforts of systems and processes. Helps promote technical skills in EI technicians.
* Manage and direct consultants, contractors, and vendors during controls related projects.
* As part of the Process Control team, shares in the responsibility of providing weekend and off-hour availability to support Process Control and IT mill needs as well as startup support from planned and unplanned shutdowns.
* Adheres to all mill safety rules, participates in, or may lead safety programs and meetings with the goal of improving safety at the mill. Supports the mill behavior-based safety program.
* Maintains mill-wide data historian (OSIsoft Pi) and related interfaces.
* Evaluates, troubleshoots, and maintains system hardware.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED:
Required Experience
* A minimum of five years of industrial experience in DCS, PLC and HMI applications
* Strong knowledge of field instrumentation, control devices, and motor controls required.
* Process control experience within paper industry experience preferred.
* Strong troubleshooting skillset for evaluating root cause and addressing technical issues with long term solutions in mind.
* Experience with ABB 800XA, Honeywell Experion, Voith QCS, Rockwell PLC Systems, GE Mark VI, GE drive Systems.
* Experience with Ethernet networks including configuration of switches, routers and VLANs.
* Experience with control loop tuning and performance evaluation tools.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Results oriented individual capable of handling projects individually, yet able to work efficiently in a team-oriented environment.
* Ability to drive large scale control system projects from concept to commissioning.
* Ability to read and understand P&IDu2019s loop sheets, and electrical drawings.
* Additional skills needed: self-directed, flexible, self-learner, multitasking, results driven, safety focused.

* B.S. Degree in Chemical, Electrical, Pulp & Paper Engineering or other engineering degree with adequate DCS, PLC and HMI application experience.

* Experience with VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) environments utilizing Thin/Zero clients
