The Opportunity:
The Process Control Engineer To provide control systems and instrumentation expertise combined with process knowledge to support the safe production of quality paperboard and by-products at the Mahrt Mill. This Process Control Engineer position directly supports the Paper Machine and Color Plant departments of the mill. This position reports to the Pulp & Paper Control Systems Group Leader.
How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:
Safety:
Actively promotes and participates in elements of the Safety Program including personal accountability to working safe every day.
* Leads/Participates in departmental safety meetings.
* Reduces or eliminates safety risks using hazard awareness techniques.
* Provides or secures expertise to review and execute hardware, software, and process changes to ensure compliance to MOC, PSM, and Mill Safety policy.
* Provides support to operations departments during safety audits.
Quality:
* Provides assistance with troubleshooting quality issues.
* Verifies process instrumentation accuracy through field checks, calibrations, and material and energy balances.
* Supports and troubleshoots the data collection and validation from vendor equipment: MeasureX, Metso, NIR, etc.
Production:
* Maintains control platforms and HMIs in such a manner as to maximize availability and performance while reducing variability and downtime.
* Performs cabinet inspections and utilizes software tools and alarms to discover and correct hardware issues before they affect production.
* Utilizes variability tools to recognize process performance shifts and works to correct and improve process stability.
* Manages and maintains remote access to control system HMIs and windows.
* Supports Maintenance in the execution of work orders requiring Process Control Engineer support.
* Builds, customizes, and maintains PI Process Book displays including Bailey & DeltaV process graphics replicated in Process Book.
* Manages or co-manages control-intensive capital jobs with Engineering to insure function, performance, and compliance to standards.
* Manages and maintains software changes and tools for the DCS and PLC systems in the mill including graphics, configuration, and program back-ups.
* Provides call support to Shift Maintenance and Operations for problems with control systems in the mill.
* Coordinates capital projects with other company personnel, with consultants, and with contractors thus preventing delays. Requires considerable planning. Responsible for check out, startup, and operation.
* Designs and implements new hardware and software control packages to improve production, quality, safety, economy, and operation of the Mahrt Mill.
Cost:
* Understands key cost drivers for processes under his/her control and drives control system performance to reduce these costs.
* Provide assistance with capital spending justifications and project implementation.
Environmental:
* Understands the Mahrt Operations Environmental Policy and related responsibilities and procedures.
* Works to ensure that the collection, control, measuring, and reporting equipment is performing optimally and that the mill processes are operating in a manner to ensure compliance with mill permits.
* Immediately reports any issues that could cause environmental excursions.
ISO:
* Maintains required DCS Documentation of all ISO devices connected to the DCS and follows change procedures when changes are made.
* Supports the Mahrt Internal ISO Audit process.
Management Operating System, People, Organizational Effectiveness:
* Trains and develops junior Process Control Engineers and DCS Co-ops.
* Participates in or provides support for Operations and Maintenance training of new, existing, or modified controls and processes in the mill.
* Leads or participates on most Productivity/Quality/Diagnostic teams at the Mahrt Mill.
* Must be competent in time management and project management and have the skills necessary to achieve cooperation of others and focus on customer needs. An understanding of the financial implications involved in decision making is important. Position may set up to Control Group Leader position on occasion.
Performance Criteria:
* Understanding of and active participation in Performance Management Program.
* Individual performance objectives will be aligned with department KPIs and reflected in individual objectives.
Miscellaneous:
* Works on special projects as directed by Control System Group Leader or Technical Manager.
* Maintains professional competence and knowledge in the controls industry and in the manufacturing process. Attends Engineering conferences within the Corporation and with suppliers.
What you will need to succeed:
* Position requires a minimum of a BS Degree in a related field such as Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Pulp & Paper Engineering or 5-8 years of industry experience and a technical degree.
* DeltaV and Allen-Bradley experience desired.
* Interpersonal skills such as building close working relationships and minimizing disagreements.
* Good verbal and written communication skills
* Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
* Adaptability to rapidly changing working environments and operational situations.
* Physical ability to operate in a paper mill environment, including light lifting, walking, oral communication, correctable vision, and ability to work in a hot, humid, and dusty environment.

**What will be expected from you?**
+ Develops and provides subject matter expertise in the effective use of process controls.
+ Maintains and updates the control narratives, complex control logic and process safety system narratives.
+ Coordinates with APC engineers to ensure the smooth functioning of the controls, the advanced controls, and the appropriate shedding control schemes when APC is turned off.
+ Identifies and implements solutions to improve plant performance.
+ Relieve other process control engineers for vacation or other absences.

+ Facilitate compliance with alarm system management policies and standards, for assigned process units. This may include leadership of the operational review meetings, and activities to rationalize alarm settings and priorities to meet KPI targets.

+ Ensure compliance with all corporate procedures and guidelines. Complete annual required training on time.
+ Partecipate in HAZOP/PHA/LOPA. Knowledge of Functional Safety per IEC/ISA is desirable in SIL verification/validation.
+ Develop process control design package for improvement projects (CAPEX).
**What are we looking for in the ideal candidate?**
+ Preferred bachelor's degree in chemical or electrical engineering. Other qualifications in Mathematics, Engineering or other technical discipline will be considered when paired with Process Control application experience.
+ Candidate should have 3-15 years' experience in process engineering, process controls or closely related activities.
+ Prefer that candidate have experience with controls in a continuous petrochemical process. Experience with an Olefins process is a plus.
+ Prefer that candidate have experience with configuration in a distributed control system environment. Familiarity with ABB DCS is a plus.
+ Experience with process engineering in an operating environment.
+ Aptitude with computerized applications.
+ Requires 5-10% travel.

**The Job You Will Perform:**
The key accountabilities listed below are not to be considered all-inclusive; a team member may be required to perform additional tasks, as directed, based on changing business needs of the company.
+ Understand the project delivery process and help define project scope, goals and deliverables that support business goals, mill safety, reliability, and improvement efforts.
+ Provide process control support to both capital and maintenance projects by developing a clear understanding of business objectives, identifying control objectives required to meet business objectives for assigned area and implementation of those objectives. Lead or participate in evaluating and selecting the best control strategy, implementing and testing control strategy for projects with controls scope.
+ Responsible for improving performance in key process control metrics such as alarms, operator interventions, control's utilization and performance for assigned areas. Responsible for the day-to-day development, support, maintenance and implementation of advanced process control applications, process optimization, process information management systems and alarm databases.
+ Manage, support and/or coordinate capital and expense projects with control scope.

+ Work jointly with the Process Control Application Technician (PCAT) within assigned operating area to ensure adequate support in maintenance, troubleshooting, tuning, and enhancing existing control schemes:

+ Helps to set the weekly direction and focus for the PCAT work in assigned areas
+ Create and provide instruction for training of Operations, I&E Maintenance and Technical personnel on control subjects as needed.
+ Works under the direction of the process control group leader to be the primary daily process control support to assigned area within a Pulp Mill.

**What You'll Be Doing**
**Job Scope:** The Process Control Engineer will design, install, maintain, support, and improve site process automation systems. This position will serve as a key technical resource to lead and support plant optimization efforts regarding capacity, cost, quality, and environmental improvements utilizing process control techniques at the plant located in Okmulgee, OK.
**Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to:**
+ Designs and develops industrial control system solutions including Distributed Control System (DCS) Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Human Machine Interface (HMI) programs to address operational needs for new construction projects, maintenance projects or operational requests.
+ Ensure compliance with company Cybersecurity efforts through evaluation, configuration and deployment of secure solutions for Operation Technology (OT) devices
+ Monitor KPI's for controls equipment, e.g. alarm system metrics, control loop performance, advanced control utilization, etc. and initiate corrective actions as necessary
+ Optimize and automate plant controls with focus on improving facility cost-effectiveness and plant production capacity.
+ Work with plant management, engineers, maintenance and contractors and to provide expert guidance; leadership and assistance to facility Control System Specialists (upgrade projects, troubleshooting, etc.)
+ Oversee the field construction, verification of proper installation, performance of loop checks and the oversight of final commissioning of DCS/PLC equipment associated with maintenance or capital projects.
+ Communicate and maintain proper documentation related to the DCS system status, changes, and coordinate/conduct personnel training for such related items as necessary.
+ Provide technical support for process safety efforts, such as Process Hazard Assessment (PHA) and Management of Change (MOC).
+ Investigate new technology, along with methods to reduce hardware costs and labor expenses as it relates to automation.
+ Provide automation solution estimates to project managers, facility engineers, and others.
+ Provide project management and oversight for assigned projects, including expansion, regulatory and modification projects. Follow Project Life Cycle process to ensure that all controls projects meet quality, cost and schedule objectives.

* Utilizes modern process control theory to design and configure systems on new and existing processes.
* Assists project engineers and managers in the planning, development, and implementation of capital projects.

* B.S. Degree in Chemical or Electrical Engineering is preferred, other engineering degree acceptable with adequate DCS, PLC and HMI application experience.
