Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Manager of Product Packaging to join our Merchant Import Operations team. This role will be responsible for establishing and managing packaging processes, ensuring quality control standards, and driving cost savings through packaging engineering and process optimization. The Manager of Product Packaging will also play a key role in the company's compliance with the new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) law. This individual will create a process for buyers to approach them for all packaging-related needs, develop a comprehensive library of packaging standards, and serve as the subject matter expert for packaging and quality control of the production of the packaging. They will build and maintain strong relationships with internal teams (buyers), external vendors, and key partners like Fineline to drive packaging improvements, reduce Minimum Order Quantities (MOS), and achieve cost savings.
**A Day In The Life**
**Duties and Responsibilities:**
**Create and Maintain Packaging Standards Library:**
+ Develop a comprehensive library of agreed-upon packaging standards, materials, and specifications that can be referenced by buyers and vendors.
+ Continuously update the library as new packaging technologies, materials, and trends emerge.
**Develop Packaging Process & Workflow:**
+ Establish a streamlined process for buyers to request packaging support, including production and quality control needs.
+ Develop clear guidelines for packaging approval processes, ensuring that packaging meets all requirements for production, safety, quality, and sustainability.
**Educational Materials & Manuals:**
+ Create and maintain an educational manual for buyers that includes packaging guidelines, best practices, sustainability considerations, and cost-reduction strategies.
+ Regularly update the manual to reflect evolving packaging trends and regulations.
**Collaborate** **with Key Stakeholders:**
+ Build and nurture relationships with vendors, Marketing team, and the internal Buying team to ensure alignment on packaging requirements.
+ Work closely with external partners to ensure packaging solutions meet operational needs and adhere to quality standards.
**Packaging Quality Control:**
+ Oversee quality control processes for packaging, ensuring that all products are packaged to meet company standards for safety, integrity, and sustainability.
+ Work with vendors and suppliers to ensure consistent quality and address any issues related to packaging defects or discrepancies.
**Packaging Engineering & Cost Optimization:**
+ Advise on packaging engineering strategies to optimize packaging efficiency, reduce waste, and minimize MOS (mark out of stock) to drive cost savings.
+ Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement solutions that reduce packaging-related costs without compromising quality or safety.
**Compliance with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR):**
+ Lead the company's efforts to comply with the new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations, ensuring that all packaging complies with recycling and disposal laws.
+ Monitor regulatory changes related to EPR and work with internal teams to ensure timely implementation of any necessary changes.
+ Collaborate with procurement team and third-party organization for tracking, sourcing and Eco-modulation.
**Scope and Impact:**
+ This position is critical in shaping the company's packaging processes, ensuring quality control, and driving cost-efficiency through packaging engineering and process optimization. The manager will oversee the development of packaging workflows, establish a library of standards, and create educational materials for buyers, fostering collaboration with both internal teams (buyers) and external vendors to enhance packaging efficiency.
+ The role has a significant impact on cost reduction, waste minimization, and packaging quality by advising on packaging engineering solutions and reducing MOS (mark out of stock). **Education:**
Bachelor's degree
**Experience:**
5+ years of experience in product packaging, packaging engineering, or related fields, with a strong understanding of packaging materials, processes, and quality control.
3+ years of experience managing people
**Skills and Abilities:**
+ Knowledge of packaging machinery and production processes.
+ Experience with packaging sustainability, including sustainable material sourcing and eco-friendly packaging solutions.
+ Understanding of packaging compliance, including international regulations and standards.
+ Ability to analyze and review data to identify issues and prioritize solutions

The Product Manager has the primary responsibility to drive profitable revenue growth by working closely with Marketing, Procurement, Finance, Sales and Technology through portfolio and product lifecycle management. **Responsibilities:**
+ Partner with Device development, Business Unit, and Human Factor teams to drive patient-centered packaging design requirements.
+ Design, develop, & qualify secondary packaging structures (carton, tray, printed materials, labels, and adhesives etc.) to enable Lilly's clinical portfolio development and product launch.
+ Define and verify product stability requirements against shipping hazards such as vibration, shock, vacuum, and thermal stresses.
+ Develop and qualify shipping containers and associated packing/shipping processes to enable product distribution in clinical environment and commercial launches.
+ Develop suitability rationale for secondary packaging and shipping;
+ Complete appropriate documentation to support tech and knowledge transfer and regulatory submissions.
+ Assess engineering risk for secondary packaging and shipping (e.g. DFMEA, AFMEA).
+ Define and establish control strategy elements such specifications and inspection/testing procedures.
+ Mentor lower level engineers and contingent workers
+ Drive packaging related technical engineering tech agenda items and process improvements
+ Incorporate technical advancements and innovations into the current portfolio as appropriate to meet the growing needs of novel drugs and devices.
Compliance:
+ Provide regulatory submission support
+ Ensure work products are compliant with applicable standards (e.g. USP, EP, JP, CFR, ASTM, ISTA).
+ Ensure timely review/approval of methods, departures, procedures, protocols, and changes, etc.

Customer Service:
+ Maintain close partnership with key development customers to integrate package development deliverables into mainstream product development for both small molecules and bioproducts (i.e. the single process map).
+ Maintain close partnership with key development, marketing, and manufacturing customers to ensure clear requirements definition and effective transfer of new products for commercialization.
+ Maintain close partnership with packaging-related groups, including New Product Planning, Clinical Trial Mfg/Pkg, Global Packaging, Mfg/Pkg Sites, and TS/MS.
+ Participate in the corporate procurement strategy for packaging components.
Technical Excellence:
+ Ensure reliable delivery of robust technically sound work products (regulatory modules, technical reports, qualification reports, development history reports, process flow documents, engineering risk assessments, etc.).
+ Participate in engineering due diligence for suppliers and CMOs.
+ Monitor progress of new technology and patient-centered design initiatives.
+ Encourage the application of package evaluation techniques to solve problems.
+ Ensure stays current in the latest developments in packaging for the pharmaceutical industry.
**Basic Qualifications:**
+ Bachelor's degree in engineering or science, with a minimum of 7 years work experience in both packaging engineering and shipping distribution field OR Master's degree in engineering or science, with a minimum of 4 years work experience in both packaging engineering and shipping distribution field
+ A minimum of 2 years of work experience in GMP regulated pharmaceutical and/or medical device industries is required.
+ Background in sterile barrier and/or deep frozen product packaging
