Production Lead

Position Summary:

The Production Shift Leader is responsible for supervising and coordinating the daily operations of a production shift to ensure efficiency, quality, safety, and compliance with company policies. This role involves leading a team of production workers, monitoring workflow, troubleshooting issues, and serving as a communication link between production staff and management.

Responsibilities and Duties:

This job description and performance standard document has been prepared as a guide to ensure better communication and understanding. All responsibilities, however, have not been included, nor could they be. Your Supervisor/Manager may from time to time ask you to perform other related duties not specifically included in this description. Likewise, this description will be revised when required to meet current business needs.
  • Supervise production employees on the assigned shift to ensure timely and efficient operation.
  • Monitor production processes to ensure compliance with safety, quality, and productivity standards.
  • Coordinate shift activities to meet daily production goals.
  • Train, coach, and evaluate team members to improve performance and foster a culture of accountability.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports of shift activities, production output, downtime, and safety incidents.
  • Work collaboratively with maintenance, quality, and logistics departments to minimize disruptions.
  • Ensure proper use and care of equipment, tools, and materials.
  • Promote a safe and organized work environment by enforcing company policies and procedures.
  • Act as the first point of contact for shift-related issues and escalate matters to management as necessary.
  • Trains, guides, and assists Associates in the successful execution of their roles.
  • Coordinates training of new Associates by assigning a qualified trainer, and monitoring the timely completion and documentation of the training program.
  • Works with Quality Assurance to make sure every Associate in the Department(s) is "Quality Certified" and completes any other job-related training.
  • Generates improvement ideas and embraces improvement projects to better the business.
  • Leads KAIZEN Events in either department to meet safety, quality or productivity goals.
  • Conducts quarterly safety and scrap projects.
  • Responsible for evaluating the department equipment routinely, working with maintenance to improve or repair equipment in the CMMS program as necessary to minimize unplanned downtime.
  • Arrives regularly prior to their scheduled shift to review the production schedule, to review staffing issues, and to touch base with the prior Shift Leader for continuity (Shift-to-Shift Tie-In) and preparation for the communication huddles.
  • Sustains and audits our core disciplines, and holds Associates accountable for compliance with all quality control, productivity, safety, housekeeping, scrap data input, and communication expectations and procedures.
  • Insists that the associates under their supervision work proactively and with a sense of urgency utilizing the Set-Up / Start-Up Procedures to facilitate systematic and timely start-ups on production equipment.
  • Drives strict compliance with all Quality Control procedures to make sure we are making product First Time Right, and assure consistency and limit our quality exposure throughout the run by continuously monitoring the process including auditing roll-to-roll checks.
  • Supports and assists the Shift Supervisor on progressive disciplinary procedures as required.
  • Act as a backup for direct reports, when required, for critical activities required to serve the customers of PPC.
  • Ensures that all responsibilities and functions performed are in accordance with company procedures and meet quality standards in place. Participate in quality programs and be aware of changes and standards within the systems.
  • Perform other duties which may be assigned as part of the essential functions of the position.

Skills and Qualifications :
  • 3+ years or more experience in a supervisory/management/leadership position in a production environment.
  • Detail-orientation required for completing required paperwork and information system's inputs with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Knowledge of Windows computing programs and experience with business operating systems a must with some degree of proficiency required.
  • Able to read and understand job tickets, and provide verbal direction to successfully complete procedures and required tasks.
  • Capable of performing mathematical calculations, and properly using tape measures and micrometers.
  • Flexibility in work assignments and priorities is required to address the dynamic needs of our customers and shifts in production requirements.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills required, and proven experience with effective teams, project management, and continuous improvement methods strongly preferred.

Working Conditions and/or Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift and ensure proper handling of items up to 75 pounds. The Production Shift Leader should consider themselves a "player-coach", willing to pitch in and lead by example as necessary.
  • Must be capable of standing for the duration of a work shift less breaks and lunch.
  • Must be capable and willing to work in excess of a normal workweek as production demands dictate.
  • Must be able to distinguish and ensure product quality in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Must be able to identify, prioritize, and meet multiple expectations for areas of responsibility.
  • Must have the physical dexterity to bend, stand, flex, and reach as the position dictates.
  • Must be able to satisfactorily see and differentiate color per adopted assessment methods in order to support efficient press set-ups and good print quality.
  • Must be capable of understanding different film testing methods and department quality procedures.

Primary purpose of the position:

Supervises the plant production function as directed.

Essential Responsible Areas:

* Responsible for maintaining a safe and secure work environment. This includes correcting unsafe acts/conditions, facilitating monthly safety meetings, performing monthly safety inspections, and investigating accidents, as required.
* Supports development, implementation, maintenance, and ongoing improvement of the food safety system.
* Responsible for maintaining process quality in accordance with Ball Packaging Operations process and quality standards.
* Serves as the facilitator (in charge) of the plant during designated period(s) of time as directed by management.
* Provides administration and supervision of the plant production function as directed.
* Provides for and reviews the performance and personal development of all subordinates on an individual basis.
* Arranges for on-the-job training and development of subordinates' skills to ensure a continued high level of production and morale.
* Provides production, spoilage, and maintenance records and maintains subordinates' attendance, evaluation and other appropriate records.
* Schedules subordinates' vacations, overtime, holidays, and job assignments.
* Provides communications and dissemination of information between crew operations.
* Accesses, inputs, and retrieves information from the computer.
* Initiates, reviews, masters, and follows all standard operating procedures (SOPs) for area of responsibility.
* Maintain positive relations with local bargaining unit ensuring a high level of productivity, if applicable.
* May be responsible for D&I department storeroom function, including housekeeping and equipment maintenance.
* May administer D&I department PM program.
* Establishes and maintains an employee relations climate of trust and confidence that will discourage third party interference; or establishes and maintains an employee relations climate of trust and confidence with employees, their union stewards and representatives which will promote achievement of plant and company goals.
* Establishes and maintains effective work relationships within the department, the division, the group, and the company. Includes ability to handle stress and to interact with others so as to establish and maintain a positive and productive work environment and minimize personal conflicts.
* While the regular working cycle of this position is usually 12-hour shifts, rotating days and nights, Monday through Sunday, working hours may vary as specified by management. Incumbent must be able to work overtime on a regular basis and/or be on call as directed by management.
* Maintains an awareness and complies with hazardous waste management and other environmental management requirements in the workplace by attending scheduled training sessions.
* Communicates with the emergency coordinator (EC) or Environmental Focal Point/Environmental Manager (EFP/EM) regarding environmental management activities.
* Understands and responds effectively to EC directions during emergencies by being familiar with emergency procedures, equipment, and systems, as necessary. Implements contingency plan to the level required by the position.
* Understands, completes, and maintains environmental documentation for which the individual is trained, or as directed by the EC, EFP, or EM (i.e., inspections, labeling, record keeping, maintenance of equipment, etc.). Reports to the EC, EFP, or EM on the status of assigned responsibilities.
* Complies with established job safety practices, policies and procedures as specified in plant and corporate directives for the safe performance of the work assignment.
* Recognizes waste streams and minimizes waste generation, through prudent use of materials, proper disposal and segregation as directed during training or by the EC, EFP/EM. Understands and practices proper accumulation and storage requirements for wastes.
* Complies with environmental regulations when using, dispensing, or handling hazardous and non-hazardous materials and wastes.

* Broad training in a related field usually acquired through college or work-related experience in the can or end making process.
* Job related experience for 2 year(s) minimum

Skills:

* Ability to apply intensive and diversified evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard production techniques, procedures, and criteria.
* Must be able to handle sensitive related and proprietary information in a confidential manner.
* Performs such individual assignments as management may direct.
* Ability to operate and functionally use a computer.
* Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
* Must maintain professional competence, ethical integrity, knowledge, and skills.

Knowledge:

* Working knowledge of the following areas: business principles, legal practices, product specifications and mechanics of equipment, Ball Packaging Operations quality standards, and generally accepted supervisory practices and procedures.
* Must follow company policies, procedures, practices, and standards of conduct as outlined in the Ball Corporation manuals.

Other Requirements:

* Works in both office and manufacturing environments.
* This position is exposed to occupational hazards, including but not limited to, high noise levels, physical obstacles, exposure to chemicals, etc.
