Description

If you are a water resource engineer or hydro/geologist, then we know that water partially flows through your veins. Wood Rodgers, a leading consulting engineering firm headquartered in California, is hiring a project hydro/geologist in our Water Resources Department. We are seeking a motivated individual with groundwater resource management, water supply development, and well design experience to join our Water Supply department. Our work centers on supporting communities of all sizes to provide safe and reliable water supplies. We develop solutions to our groundwater resource needs based on an understanding of groundwater basins to support drinking water supplies, sustainable agricultural practices, and groundwater recharge. Our projects consist of a wide array of water supply projects - from new water sources to rehabilitating older sources to improve reliability and/or water quality.

This is a staffed, hourly, non-exempt position.

A day in the life as a Wood Rodgers' Project Geologist
  • Lead, manage, and provide technical expertise in developing groundwater resources for municipal, commercial, and agricultural clients.
  • Oversee and support the development of groundwater recharge projects for a diverse range of clients.
  • Plan, organize, and manage all aspects of projects to ensure successful completion within defined constraints such as time, budget, and resources.
  • Implement business development strategies to grow department revenue, expand market share, and maintain leadership in geologic and groundwater-related services.
  • Conduct geologic and hydrogeologic studies, managing field activities and staff to optimize data collection, mitigate risks, and achieve project objectives.
  • Perform well field assessments, including the development of capital improvement and asset management plans.
  • Design and manage municipal supply well construction projects, ensuring compliance with engineering standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide field oversight for contractor activities, including borehole drilling, well construction, well development, and testing.
  • Collect groundwater samples from production and monitoring wells using appropriate methods and tools.
  • Travel to project sites in a company vehicle, working in various weather conditions such as rain, heat, or cold.
  • Be available for occasional overnight trips as needed, primarily within California, with travel expenses covered.
  • Assess and evaluate geological features, project sites, and environmental conditions.
  • Analyze variations in pumping water levels, sand production, and electrical consumption to assess well and pump performance.
  • Ideally, apply analytical and numerical groundwater models to support contaminant investigations and water resource projects (preferred but not required).
  • Develop well rehabilitation and modification programs to restore capacity and improve water quality.
  • Oversee the preparation of geologic and hydrogeologic cross-sections for groundwater resource protection and development.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships to drive revenue growth and business opportunities.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Geology, Hydrogeology, or Earth Science (Master's degree preferred).
  • Licensed in California as a Professional Geologist (PG) or Professional Engineer (PE); Certified Hydrogeologist (CHG) is a plus.
  • 5+ years of experience in hydrogeologic consulting, including data analysis, report preparation, and creating exhibits and figures to communicate geologic and hydrogeologic data.
  • Strong track record of client satisfaction.
  • Extensive experience in municipal water well design, drilling methods, construction, and testing.
  • Familiarity with State and local regulations governing municipal supply wells.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Highly motivated self-starter with a commitment to teamwork and a collaborative, employee-owned culture.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Esri ArcGIS.
  • Ability to travel and work in outdoor environments as needed for drilling and construction projects.

General Responsibilities:
Evaluate and interpret subsurface field and sampling data including soil and groundwater to develop conclusions concerning the environmental and geologic site conditions. Generate subsurface maps and cross-sections and collaborate with engineering and environmental scientist staff on projects. Required skills and qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in geology; 
  • 5+ years of experience in the environmental industry; 
  • Professional license (PG); 
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification; 
  • Knowledge of California and federal environmental regulations and experience with their implementation, including interfacing with regulatory agencies; 
  • Knowledge of and experience with environmental investigations and remediation technologies;

The role of the project geologist or environmental scientist is to oversee and conduct field implementation for various environmental projects, such as site assessments and remediation, and environmental and stormwater compliance. Your key responsibilities:

  • Performing outdoor, all-season, on-site geological and environmental investigation work at sites ranging from commercial/industrial sites to open and remote spaces.
  • Conducting subsurface geologic investigations in connection with the evaluation of various media (soil, sediment, soil vapor, surface water, and groundwater).
  • Responsible for fieldwork including coordination of subcontractors, oversight of drilling by subcontractors (hand auger, direct push, hollow-stem auger, air vacuum), installation of soil vapor probes, installation of groundwater monitoring wells, performing hand auger drilling, soil logging, trench logging, surface water and stormwater sampling, collection of environmental samples (soil, sediment, soil vapor, groundwater, ambient air), and preparation of daily field documentation of health and safety and field activities.
  • Assist with preparation of work plans, sampling and analysis plans, health and safety plans, and technical reports (groundwater monitoring reports, phase i and ii environmental site assessments).
  • Assist with preparation of final soil boring logs, cross-sections, trench logs, and other report supporting documentation.
  • Assist with review and interpretation of environmental data.
  • Complete applicable company and client required health & safety training (including osha required training) and follow health & safety policies and procedures.
  • Follow established standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines to complete entry level and routine assignments.

Qualifications:

  • 40-hour hazwoper and 8-hour hazwoper supervisor certification strongly preferred.
  • Geologists or engineers must eventually obtain a professional licensure from the state of california.
  • Some projects may require successful completion of background livescan check/fingerprinting.
  • A clean, valid class c driver's license is required for this position, and familiarity with driving larger vehicles (pickup trucks) and driving off-road is preferred.
  • Ability to lift 50 lb. objects to chest height is required.
  • Familiarity with cgp, ceqa/nepa, scaaqmd, cdfw, and caltrans permits and procedures preferred.
  • A willingness to frequently work at sites throughout the southern california area is required (including hotel stays for multi-day projects), with occasional work at sites in central and northern california, and rarely at out-of-state project sites. Must have required travel documents.
  • Expectation to work 1012-hour days in the field with occasional holiday, night, and/or weekend shifts. Some projects may require overtime to meet client expectations. All overtime is compensated.
