The Project Geologist plans and conducts work requiring judgment and independent evaluation in the development and execution of subsurface exploration techniques. A Project (Engineeering) Geologist acts as a resource and specialist in the application of geologic concepts, analysis, and principles in the discipline. The Project Geologist works with minimal supervision under the designated location manager and senior staff.
The Project Geologist is responsible for the successful execution of projects and preparation of high quality deliverables under their responsible charge. The Project Geologist will manage projects from inception to completion, including solicitation of opportunities, preparation of technical and cost proposals, contracting and contract administration, oversight of field and technical project staff, and preparation of deliverables on schedule and within budget. The Project Geologist is responsible for meeting the company's objectives for quality control and budget management.
Responsibilities
- In both a supervisory capacity and at a project level, plans, develops, coordinates, and directs large and small projects with complex features.
- Reviews work products for compliance with provisions of the Quality Control Manual.
- As individual researcher or worker, carries out complex assignments that require the development of new or improved techniques and procedures.
- As staff specialist, serves as a staff advisor and technical consultant.
- Supervises, coordinates, and reviews the work of other professionals, field technicians, and other technical or administrative personnel who assist in specific assignments.
- Develops and reviews technical and cost proposals, technical deliverables and other documents.
- Attracts and develops clients; maintains a close relationship with clients throughout and beyond the project term.
- Assists in establishing policies and technical procedures and assists in developing new markets in professional services.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in geology or equivalent.
- Professional registration (PG) required. Working towards CEG licensure is expected.
- Minimum five years of experience as a professional staff-level geologist.
- Experience managing projects independently and successfully (on time and within budget).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of current regulatory requirements and industry standards for the types of projects performed.
- Excellent communication skills with clients, contractors, and colleagues.
- Excellent writing skills, language usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and ability to produce reports that are complete and accurate in a timely manner.
- Demonstrated knowledge and appropriate application of field and laboratory testing methodologies and related equipment.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience designing and executing subsurface exploration programs, drilling, logging and sampling, geologic data collection, and installing and monitoring of field instrumentation.
- Consistently demonstrates sound professional judgment, attention to detail and excellent time management.
- Willingness to travel to complete assignments. Must have valid driver's license and an insurable driving record.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including teamwork and problem-solving skills.
Physical and Environmental Factors:
- Ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull objects and materials up to 50 pounds.

WSP is currently initiating a search for an **Environmental Project Manager - Geologist** for our **Savannah, Georgia** office. This is a hybrid role. The position will be involved with site assessment and remediation projects with our Coastal Georgia Team within the WSP Earth & Environment Business.
In this role you will manage and participate in environmental projects that involve high-level field studies, technical report preparation, project management, and interaction with clients, regulators, contractors, and stakeholders. Projects will include environmental site investigations and site characterizations, geological studies, work plans, groundwater sampling and remedial actions. The evaluation of groundwater, surface water, soil, soil vapor, and air samples for regulatory compliance and the preparation of corrective action plans for soil and groundwater remediation. Position requires some travel and fieldwork as needed.
**Your Impact**
+ Participate in a wide range of environmental and engineering projects, from conceptual site model development to design and implementation of remediation and risk management strategies.
+ Develop, lead, and implement environmental site investigations/assessments.
+ Develop technical reports describing field activities and presenting environmental data for projects regulated under CERCLA, RCRA, Solid Waste including CCR, Clean Water Act, LUST, State Programs, Brownfields and Voluntary Remediation Program.
+ Perform project management duties, such as develop proposals, manage budgets, monitor schedules, procure subcontractors, and coordinate equipment and materials.
+ Provide guidance with data collection efforts for extracting, identifying, and compiling environmental data from soil, soil gas, groundwater, boring logs, and other matrices for investigations, and surveys.
+ Prepare complex data and visualizations such as soil analyses, groundwater modeling, geologic cross-sections, and other illustrations.
+ Analyze, evaluate, and interpret geologic, hydrogeologic, and chemical data obtained during field investigations, offering input with developing corrective action plans.
+ Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner. Oversee and monitor cross-functional teams in executing project work.
+ Collaborates with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide future ready solutions for clients.
+ Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
**Who You Are**
**Required Qualifications:**
+ Bachelor's Degree in Geology or closely related discipline.
+ Essential professional licensure/certification (GA P.G. or ability to obtain license).
+ 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR )
+ Minimum of 7 years of environmental project experience, including task management, proposal writing, client contact, and regulatory interaction.
+ Experience with site investigations and remediation of environmental impacts to soil and groundwater.
+ Project management experience with small to mid-level projects including tracking hours and expenses for project work.
+ Experience in conducting Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments in accordance with ASTM guidelines and industry standards.
+ Well-defined specific knowledge of relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements especially in the areas of CERCLA and RCRA.
+ Experience sampling soil and groundwater via drilling including direct-push, hollow-stem auger, sonic, and other similar drilling methods.
+ Experience with soil logging based on the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS).
+ Experience installing groundwater monitoring wells, recovery wells, and soil gas sampling points.
+ Subcontractor management experience including procuring subcontractor bids, purchase requisitions and scheduling work.
+ Works independently and provides guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
+ Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.
+ Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills with experience writing technical reports and project proposals.
+ Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to reach conclusions from test results, data collation, and identify the most cost-effective responses that will minimize waste, prevent pollution, and conserve resources.
+ Effective at coordinating and assertively directing others in the field such as subcontracted drillers, excavation contractors, utility locators, and others to consistently complete tasks safely and efficiently.
+ Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
+ 40-Hour OSHA HAZWOPER Health and Safety Training Certified (29 CFR ).
