Our Internal Audit Group is a worldwide function with 300 team members and offices across nine countries within American Express. **About the Role**
The Director, Project Governance is based in New York City, Salt Lake City, or Phoenix and is a hybrid role that will lead a portfolio of audits focused on the design and execution of the Company's project management framework and application of the framework to prioritized project executions across all lines of business. The Director will advise on ways to incorporate and comply with project and change risk taxonomy, associated risk management policies, and regulatory expectations including OCC Heightened Standards through Audit activities.
**Key Responsibilities**
+ Oversee audit professionals across multiple simultaneous audit projects of all sizes and complexity across multiple business areas within and outside of local region, in unfamiliar areas, and for different audit leaders, ensuring audits are completed timely and with high quality; conduct L2 reviews
+ Specialize in one or more specific lines of business; own portfolio with accountability, ownership and horizontal risk view of entire portfolio
+ Collaborate with Audit Leaders to develop the annual Audit Plan, leveraging knowledge of the portfolio, banking, and industry trends to establish a risk-based Audit Plan with adequate coverage
+ Support and/or lead regulatory activities and attend regulatory meetings as appropriate
+ Lead delivery and execution of the annual Audit Plan for assigned audit portfolio using an integrated auditing approach that considers financial, operational, compliance, and technology risks
+ Review management's corrective action plans to address business-identified issues, audit findings and regulatory remediations
+ Lead Chief Audit Executive (CAE) audit report reviews and share insights / observations
+ Develop relationships with Senior Business Leaders across all business units, proactively identify changes in business environment, emerging risks, and control priorities that may impact Audit Plans, conducts effective business monitoring and guides team to adjust the audit approach accordingly; demonstrate effective challenge by providing deep subject matter knowledge industry related knowledge to support business partnership efforts
+ Collaborate with Senior Managers / Managers to conduct post-audit feedback discussions with audit team members to provide actionable feedback, support development, and recognize accomplishments
+ Support Audit Leader with special projects across multiple business units and geographic regions, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and risk frameworks, helps prepare for regulator responses and attend meetings as needed
+ Serve as a People Leader, providing mentorship, coaching, and career development support for direct reports
+ Recruit, supervise, coach, mentor, and develop audit staff to build high-performing teams, fostering continuous learning and professional growth
+ Develop the training plan to upskill colleagues to ensure audit teams have the skills necessary to effectively deliver the Audit Plan

**Minimum Qualifications**
+ 8 years of audit experience
+ Prior experience working at a Big Four / G-SIB
+ Has strong written and verbal communication skills that deliver high quality, actionable and value-added feedback to management on potential issues and potential solutions to close gaps
+ Effectively oversees multiple audits, projects and portfolio, setting direction, and developing team capabilities
+ Guides the team in applying critical thinking to evaluate potential risks and how to translate these considerations into evidence and risk-based insights
+ Guides team in applying control theory and professional auditing practices across the full audit lifecycle, including design and evaluation of control frameworks

**Preferred Qualifications**

  • Proactively identify and prioritize risk-related gaps (including those highlighted by regulators) while driving timely, effective, and sustainable remediation that reduces exposures to acceptable levels and prevents recurrence.
  • Synthesize and communicate risk data, emerging trends, and insights through structured, impactful reporting to senior leadership and the board of directors, ensuring decision-makers receive timely, accurate, and actionable information.
  • Guide and influence first-line stakeholders in designing, refining, and maintaining procedures that effectively embed the change governance framework into business operations, balancing rigor with practical execution.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards (e.g., Heightened Standards, FFIEC, PMBOK), ensuring that risk practices not only comply with regulatory expectations but also strengthen the enterprise’s resilience and transformation efforts.
  • Design and deliver engaging training and awareness programs for first- and second-line professionals, senior management, and the board, building organizational capability and embedding a strong culture of risk-aware transformation.

Qualifications:

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in risk, compliance, legal, or regulatory roles (or related), ideally in a Global Systemically Important Banks (GSIBs); or risk related management consulting firms
  • Experience with project/program management and governance required. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree a plus
  • Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) certification is a plus

Skills

  • Strong communication skills is a must, particularly written communication
  • Ability to effectively deal with stakeholders

The Learning Design and Governance team within the Talent COE Group at American Express is focused on providing exemplary enterprise learning strategy around design, delivery, and oversight for Global Regulatory/Compliance learning and development programs. The Project Analyst position will be responsible for elements of program project management and turning data into information, information into insight and insight into business decisions. Working closely with the business to develop a sustainable enterprise reporting strategy in which we deliver to global key stakeholders, including but not limited to: Compliance, Audit, Risk, and external bank regulators, such as the Office of Comptroller (OCC) and the Federal Reserve Bank (FRB).
The Project Analyst will play a critical role in supporting program governance through oversight of third-party management, waiver processes, policy adherence, and executive-level reporting. This role requires strong organizational, communication, and governance skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, support audits and regulatory reviews, and prepare clear, impactful presentations for senior stakeholders. The candidate must be a self-starter, excel both independently and in a team environment, and be comfortable adapting to a dynamic and evolving landscape. This position reports to the Manager of Program Governance.
**Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):**
+ Support governance activities across programs, including waiver review, third-party oversight, and compliance tracking.
+ Partner with key stakeholders across various business units to ensure adherence to learning governance frameworks and standards.
+ Develop, update, and deliver executive-ready presentations, status reports, and program summaries for senior leadership.
+ Maintain governance and project management dashboards and trackers to monitor program process controls.
+ Provide governance support for internal and external regulatory audits/exams.
+ Identify and escalate risks or issues related to governance processes, while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
+ Contribute to the development of standardized processes, policies, and tools that strengthen governance practices.
**Qualifications:**
+ Strong project management experience, with proven ability to manage multiple initiatives concurrently.
+ Demonstrate a strong understanding of governance frameworks, project management practices, and the effective application and documentation of program controls.
+ Excellent communication skills, with ability to prepare and present information to diverse audiences, including senior executives.
+ Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to analyze information to identify discrepancies and recommend solutions.
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and advanced formulas.
+ Proactive mindset with ability to adapt to changing priorities and contribute effectively in a hybrid team environment.
+ Experience supporting internal/external audits and exams.
**Preferred Additional:**
+ Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in program governance, risk management, or third-party management.
+ Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (particularly PowerPoint for executive presentations and Excel for tracking/analysis).
+ Familiarity with governance tools, dashboards, or reporting platforms (e.g., SharePoint, Tableau, or other tracking systems).
+ Experience with Learning Management Systems is a plus.
+ Strong problem-solving and process improvement mindset.
**Qualifications**
Salary Range: $65,500.00 to $102,500.00 annually bonus benefits
