The Office of the Ogle County Public Defender is appointed to represent clients determined by the Court to be indigent in criminal, juvenile and specified civil proceedings. As assigned by the Chief Public Defender, the Assistant Public Defender represents clients in these matters.
Job Duties:
The essential function of the Assistant Public Defender is to provide representation of clients in a variety of proceedings including, but not limited to: felony, misdemeanor, traffic, petitions to revoke, daily PFA hearings and Juvenile Court Act proceedings. Representation includes providing high level defense at all stages of the case which will include adversarial hearings and jury/bench trials.
The Assistant Public Defender may be assigned other duties as needed.
Qualifications:
The Assistant Public Defender must be licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois and be in good standing. This position requires knowledge of relevant law and procedure.
The Assistant Public Defender must possess strong courtroom skills and the ability to manage a high volume caseload.

By the time you begin your service with Recovery Corps, you should be:
- In recovery for at least one uninterrupted year from a substance use disorder
- Dependable and have a history of good attendance
- Able to understand and follow instructions
- Able to set a pace and maintain a service schedule, dependong on the agreed upon hours commitment
- Have basic computer skills (like email and navigating online)
- Fluent in English for speaking, reading, and writing
- 18 years of age or older with a high school diploima or equivalent
- A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States
- Able to successfully complete a background check
We are currently hiring for the 2025-26 program year. Positions run September 2025-July 2026.

The Legal Aid Society (LAS) is the legal aid arm of Metropolitan Family Services. Founded in 1886, it is the oldest provider of legal aid in Illinois and the second oldest in the nation. The mission of LAS is to protect and strengthen families by providing equal access to justice for all by focusing on the most vulnerable communities, including those who are impoverished, the elderly, and victims of violence & crimes. LAS has four practice groups: Safety & Family focuses on issues related to family law and orders of protection for survivors of domestic violence and on the prevention of abuse and financial exploitation of seniors; Health, Housing, & Economic Stability represents low-income tenants facing evictions, housing voucher terminations, and other housing issues; Individual Rights & Social Justice works with survivors of human trafficking and immigrant victims of crime to obtain immigration relief, and with individuals with certain employment law matters; Communities Partnering 4 Peace is a community lawyering project dedicated to removing barriers to housing, employment, and financial stability, among other issues, for members of the Chicago community who have been impacted by gun violence.
An intern will have a wide range of litigation exposure, including client interviewing and counseling, negotiation, research, drafting pleadings, and court appearances (if 711-licensed).
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide research case law and procedure for effective client representation.
- Assist in identifying and analyzing legal problems and solutions relevant to a practice group’s area of law;
- Support in participating with attorneys in client interviews and negotiations with adverse parties;
- Assist in preparing legal documents including motions, discovery materials, and pleadings in connection with court proceedings;
- Assist maintaining client files; and
- Work effectively with staff and a diverse client population.
QUALIFICATIONS:

- Currently enrolled in a JD program.

The Legal Aid Society (LAS) is the legal services arm of MFS. SALARY:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Work with clients who are receiving legal services related to human trafficking and provides supportive help, advocacy, and case management, as appropriate. Triage and provide immediate services to clients who may be in crisis.
- Conducts thorough assessment of clients, evaluating their service needs. Develops a written plan with the client specifying goals to be achieved and services to be pursued.
- Works collaboratively with LAS staff, MFS programs, and other community resources to provide holistic services to clients.
- Maintain documents, data, and other information required by various funders. Ensure all case files and case data are timely and accurately updated.
- Perform community outreach by attending events and sharing information about LAS's services.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

For over 50 years, Legal Aid Chicago has provided free civil legal assistance to people living in poverty in metropolitan Chicago. Each year our attorneys, volunteers, and staff help resolve civil legal problems, including domestic violence, consumer fraud, and unfair evictions. Legal Aid Chicago was founded on the philosophy that all individuals are entitled to quality civil legal representation, regardless of their income. We work to ensure that poverty is not an impediment to justice.
Legal Aid Chicago offers a hybrid work environment. Our office, located in downtown Chicago at 120 S. LaSalle Street, is ADA accessible and has convenient access to public transportation and local expressways. This position requires in-person presence 3 days per week at the Aspire Center for Workforce Innovation in Chicagos Austin community.
Position : Legal Aid Chicago seeks one full-time Intake Specialist in our Client Screening Group (CSG). CSG is the central entry point for applicants seeking legal assistance from Legal Aid Chicago. Applications for services are accepted by phone, online, in person, and through referrals from community partners. This position supports our partnership with Westside Health Authority to provide on-site intake for participants in their reentry and job placement services and more generally to be a community-based resource for Austin residents.
Responsibilities
- Register applicants for services in an electronic case management system
- Conduct interviews (mostly by phone) to determine applicants eligibility for services, gather basic case facts, and identify basic legal problems
- Apply Legal Aid Chicagos eligibility guidelines and legal services priorities to determine the appropriate level of service for clients
- Provide referrals and give limited legal advice under the direction and supervision of attorneys
- Schedule appointments with one of Legal Aid Chicagos Practice Groups for applicants who may need more extended legal representation
- Attend staff meetings and trainings to develop knowledge to provide high-quality legal services
- Maintain case notes, records, and accurate timekeeping in electronic case management system
- Maintain proficiency with all equipment, technology, policies and procedures needed to perform duties
- Engage with other service providers at the Aspire Center to coordinate services

Legal Intake Specialist
North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic is seeking a full-time Legal Intake Specialist .
The mission of the North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic (NSLAC) is to provide accessible, quality, equitable, free legal services in the areas of domestic violence, housing, and immigration to give low-income, at-risk community members access to justice and the opportunity to live productive and secure lives. NSLAC is a 10-year-old dynamic nonprofit with a collaborative culture and the goal of becoming the model legal aid organization focused on suburban communities.
The Intake Specialist will be responsible for screening clients for eligibility and will report to the Managing Attorney.
Job Responsibilities
- Screen potential clients by phone to determine eligibility for NSLACs legal services in close collaboration with domestic violence, housing and immigration practice groups;
- Enter client information into case management database;
- Schedule intakes for clients with practice groups;
- Provide referrals to clients who are not eligible for services;
- Check online requests for intakes;
- Maintain callback spreadsheet;
- Interpret and translate documents for NSLAC staff;
- Provide administrative support including copying, scanning, and mailing;
- Perform other responsibilities needed to ensure NSLAC teams success.
Qualifications/Skills:
- Bilingual (Spanish-English) required;
- Bachelor's degree preferred;
- A demonstrated team-player with exemplary interpersonal skills;
- Compassion, patience and empathy towards clients experiencing hardship and trauma;
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
- Experience with client services and/or working in a legal environment preferred.
