Job Description
Siena College Public Safety Officers ensure the safety and security of the Siena College Community by providing professional supportive services to students, employees and visitors. Duties include (but not limited to):
- Campus patrol by vehicle, bicycle and foot
- Ensure compliance with: college rules, traffic rules & laws and ordinances
- Physical security checks
- Access control
- Motorist assistance
- Computer aided dispatch and CCTV monitoring
- Report writing
- Community outreach and training
Shift Schedule: Shift schedule is flexible and may include nights and weekends.
Salary: $18.13/hour

Provide a safe environment for University students, staff and guests by preventing and suppressing crime, protecting life and property and preserving peace within the campus area.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
+ Patrol campus property in department vehicles, including motorcycles, or on foot during the day or at night and in all kinds of weather conditions. Enter and exit vehicles quickly; conduct searches of buildings, including staircases, basements, roofs, catwalks and crawlspaces; survey outdoor areas in inclement weather including heat, cold, wind, precipitation, etc., which may involve climbing or jumping over obstacles, openings, ditches or off of elevated surfaces and crawling through confined areas; pursue suspects at high speeds in vehicles or by running; use body force to gain entrance through barriers. Enter areas which contain smoke, chemicals and laboratory activities.
+ Effect arrests, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and/or other restraints. Pursue fleeing suspects on foot or in vehicle through unfamiliar terrain; conduct visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time; exercise independent judgement, within legal guidelines, to determine when there is reasonable suspicion to detain; subdue resisting subjects using hands and feet while employing defensive tactics, maneuvers or approved nonlethal weapons; perform searches of persons which involve touching and feeling to detect potential weapons and/or contraband; read Advice of Rights to suspects.
+ Gather information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statements of victims, witnesses, suspects and confidential informants. Prepare investigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols and mathematical computations. Communicate effectively with others verbally to provide information, answer questions, give directions and issue commands.
+ Communicate effectively over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications, often under adverse conditions such as siren usage and high-speed vehicle operations. Read and comprehend rules, regulations, policies, procedures and applicable laws for purposes of ensuring appropriate officer behavior and response and performing enforcement activities involving the public; issue violations.
+ Load, unload, aim and fire handguns, shotguns and other department firearms from a variety of body positions to department standards. Independently determine when situations justify the use of deadly force; maintain emotional control and accuracy with firearms under extreme stress; manage interpersonal conflicts to maintain order. Perform tasks which require lifting, carrying and/or dragging people or heavy objects while performing arrest, rescue or general patrol activities. Perform Lifesaving First Aid procedures such as Rescue Breathing, Closed Chest Compressions and Airway Clearing Chest Compressions.
+ All Public Safety Officers are considered to be "Essential Personnel," and are required to report during a university emergency closure period.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
This classification patrols the University campus in vehicles or on foot to prevent and stop criminal activity and protect life and property. The essential job functions listed above are required of all incumbents upon commissioning. The University reserves the right to hire uncommissioned individuals into this classification and send them to police academy. In all cases, incumbents must be able to be commissioned upon completion of academy requirements or they will be terminated. Uncommissioned officers will be given non-law enforcement duties until sent to the academy. This classification is typically located in the Department of Public Safety. **Duties/Responsibilities:**
+ Conducts proactive interior and exterior rounds to prevent, deter and identify potential criminal activity, identify safety concerns and public safety hazards.
+ Responds to public safety calls for service and triages and addresses emergency situations.
+ Performs a varying degree of patient watches and monitoring, rounding, parking lot audits and post assignments as directed by the Post Orders.
+ Provide coverage at the Switchboard, Communication and Dispatch Center.
+ Acts as a liaison between the hospital and local emergency services.
+ Utilizes CCTV systems to identify, report and address public safety concerns.
+ De-escalates crisis situations through verbal de-escalation techniques, when necessary effects physical restraints techniques.
+ Actively contributes to a growing, high quality, community and customer service based safety program.
+ Maintains a clean and organized post, equipment and vehicle and conducts basic cleaning when necessary.
+ Supports the hospitals core values and mission by providing exceptional customer focused service for patients, visitors and staff.
+ _Per Diem Officers must work at least 3 shifts per month; 1 which is a weekend & 1 which is an overnight or shift coverage as needed. Per Diem Officers are also required to work 1 major summer holiday and 1 major winter holiday._

The Public Safety Management Program is followed to ensure a safe and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors and provide for the development of employee participation in a comprehensive, proactive loss prevention program.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
1. Responds promptly to emergencies.
a. Calls for assistance, in a professional manner, within one minute, as indicated by officer's reports and supervisor's observations.
b. Performs in emergency/crises according to prescribed procedure or protocol, as indicated by officer's report.
c. Demonstrates consistent ability to assess and resolve crises, with minimum restrictions, according to approved training methods 100% of the time.
2. Patrols inspect, and reports loss prevention issues and safety hazards.
a. Performs frequent, random, and visible patrols as indicated by watch clock records and the number of activity notices.
b. Demonstrates knowledge of safety and loss prevention issues, as indicated by the number of activity notices and responses to patrol observations verified by safety rounds.
c. Enforces all protocols, regulations, policies, and procedures under which Mount Auburn Hospital operates, and all applicable ordinances, statutes, and codes of the City of Cambridge, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the United States of America.
3. Reports incidents.
a. Prepares factual, concise, and legible incident reports, as prescribed by department training and standards.
b. Submits incident reports by the conclusion of the shift.
c. Completes incident reports on all major incidents and informational occurrences, as prescribed by department standards.
4. Performs desk duties.
a. Observes CCTV monitors continually for unusual activity, as indicated by the response and journal entries.
b. Monitors alarm/access control computer and dispatches response officer within one minute if an unexpected alarm is received.
5. Ensures a positive public relations attitude.
a. Maintains positive posture, polite, and respectful communications with patients, families, visitors, and other employees, as indicated by supervisor's observations.
b. Demonstrates self-awareness in presenting positive comportment, adhering to department uniform and dress standards.
6. Performs adjacent duties as required.
a. Responds immediately to evidence of criminal activity or suspicious acts, questions witnesses, protects recovered property, escorts unauthorized persons from hospital property, and notifies appropriate criminal justice agencies as necessary.
b. Conducts preliminary investigations. Observes, confronts, detains, if necessary, and interviews any suspicious individuals.
c. Provides safe transportation for staff members and their possessions.
d. Provides special protection for V.I.P. persons or situations involving individuals of sensitive status, as indicated in the hospital V.I.P disaster plan.
e. Provides one-to-one observation of patients as needed.
f. Conducts regularly scheduled instructional fire drills.
g. Assists with department orientation, in-service, required training, and continuing education of department members.
7. Oversees hospital parking.
a. Enforces all hospital parking and traffic control regulations.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Adequate reading, oral, and written communicative skills, normally acquired through the completion of a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalency. Associate's degree or equivalent in criminal justice, law enforcement, or business management preferred.
2. One year of related work experience.
3. Valid Massachusetts driver's license, with proven safe driving record in all weather conditions.
4. Good decision-making ability in stressful/emergencies.
5. Ability to pass and maintain certification in CPR (first responder - C) and CPI (Non-violent crisis intervention).
