Job Summary

Department Overview

Bucyrus has a progressive and pro-active department working in a community oriented policing system. We are seeking candidates with a strong desire to enter into and excel in the law enforcement profession emphasizing courtesy and integrity. We have one school resource officer, a K-9 unit, detective bureau, participate in county wide Special Response Team and regional task forces. Bucyrus Police Officers respond to approximately 12,000 calls for service per year. Area Information: The Bucyrus Police Department serves the City of Bucyrus, the county seat of Crawford County, and the home of the Bratwurst Festival. The City of Bucyrus has a population of approximately 12,000 people and an area of 12 square miles. Lateral Transfer Requirements : Lateral transfer candidates must possess a current Ohio Peace Officer’s Training Commission (OPOTA) certificate.  The officer must have prior law enforcement experience of no less than one (1) year full time experience or five (5) years of paid part time law enforcement experience.  Starting wage for a lateral transfer is based off of completed prior years of service.  After six (6) months of service a lateral transfer candidate will receive forty (40) hours of vacation leave.   

Extra Credit : 20% extra credit will be given for military service with an honorable discharge and also for possession of an Ohio Peace Officer basic training certificate. Maximum extra credit allowed is 20%. Copies of the Ohio Peace Officers Training certificate or a letter from an academy showing the candidate has passed the state test, and/or a DD214 from the military must be submitted with the application .

Academy Certification: Ohio Police Officer Basic Training Certificate is preferred.  Applicants who do not possess an Ohio Basic Police Officer certificate may be eligible to be sent to the police academy by the City. Physical Fitness Testing

Physical Fitness test date will be Sunday, November 9, 2025  at 9:00 A.M. at Bucyrus High School 900 West Perry St., Bucyrus, Ohio 44820 The Bucyrus Police recruit physical fitness test battery is from the Cooper Institute. The four test areas are listed below;

  1. 300 Meter Run (Anaerobic Power, Sprinting Ability),
  2. 1 RM Bench Press (Muscular Strength, Upper Body),
  3. 1-minute Sit Ups (Muscular Endurance, Core Body),
  4. 1-minute Push Ups (Muscular Endurance, Upper Body)

The Scoring system used for the testing will be Age and Gender Norms. Prior to testing, participating recruits will submit to the city a signed Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire. A recruit answering yes to one or more questions on the Physical Activity Readiness

Questionnaire will need to submit a completed Physician's Statement form signed by physician or nurse practitioner. (Forms are in City application for employment) The following scores list the 50 percent mark for each test. All four test scores are based on age & gender. An average score of 50 percent from the four tests is required to pass the physical test.

Your final score on the Fitness test is based on each test, each test is worth a max of 5 points with a max of 20 points be awarded after completion of all test. Scoring 50 percent on each test would only award the recruit 4 points. Complete each test at the best of your ability to achieve the best score.

About Campus Police

Campus police officers are here to protect and serve the campus community.

As a department, Campus police are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at the Hardin Valley Campus, and answer the emergency calls to at any hour.

Per TCA 49-7-118 "Campus police officer" means a person commissioned by an employing institution, school, or board and rendered an oath to provide police services, enforce law, exercise arrest authority and carry firearms, and thus is subject to the Tennessee POST commission.

In addition to safety at the college, campus police officers offer other services to students, visitors and employees:

Campus police officers are required to be on campus 30 minutes prior to the start of classes and 30 minutes after the last adjourns. The shifts run daily from the earliest time of 0700 hours to the latest time of 2230 hours. Police officers work a 37.5-hour work week, and overtime is rarely, if ever, required. Police officers are not required to work during administrative closing days due to winter break or inclement weather, and these administrative closing times do not require use of personal leave hours. Police officers rarely accrue court time due most incidents being handled at an administrative level with successful partnerships with the Dean of Students, Institutional Compliance or Human Resources. Campus police leadership strives to maintain a great work-life balance for all officers, and police officers frequently go months or years without receiving phone calls from campus while off-duty. Police officers on campus are supported by security guards who can help with minor requests for service, such as door unlocks or battery boost requests.

Position Summary: The overall purpose of this job is to ensure a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors of the college.

Essential Functions:

30% Patrols college grounds and adjacent areas on foot and in motor vehicle to deter crime. Enforce Tennessee State Laws and policies and guidelines set by Pellissippi State Community College, the Tennessee Board of Regents, and the U.S. Department of Education's Higher Education Act. Apprehends criminal offenders and effect arrests as necessary. Maintains all department issued equipment.

25% Conducts investigations into criminal activity, motor vehicle accidents, illness and injuries. Prepare Police police reports, motor vehicle accident reports, and reports documenting illness or injury. Prepare records for court and testify at judicial hearings and trials. Monitors and reviews security camera recordings to assist in investigations and to ensure safety for the campus community. Performs additional clerical tasks as required.

10% Provides direction, supervision and training for contract security guards. Trains PSCC contract security guards on proper patrol techniques, unlocking and locking down college buildings, conducting basic investigations and report writing, and emergency plans and procedures.

10% Inspects college property for safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, unsecured doors or other unusual events. Unlocks doors to classrooms, offices and other secured areas of the college for authorized persons. Provides vehicle unlock and jump starts service to the campus community.

5% Perform tasks related to emergency incidents, emergency drills, and the college Emergency Response Plan. Provides mutual police assistance, upon request, to local police agencies to assist in large scale emergencies.

5% Provides first aid and direction in emergency situations and coordinates emergency response by EMS, fire, and outside police agencies. Inspects and ensures proper operation of emergency and security related equipment.

5% Monitors meetings between college officials and students or employees to ensure personal safety. Provides employee termination escorts, personal safety escorts, and security for special events other special security needs.

5% Monitors traffic flow and parking conditions and directs traffic as necessary. Issue tickets for parking and moving violations as per college Parking and Traffic Regulations and Tennessee State vehicle and traffic regulations.

5% Maintains P.O.S.T. (Tennessee Police Officer) certification by attending specialized annual training. Attends additional training for professional development.

Requires one-year experience as a Peace Officer Standards Training (P.O.S.T.) certified Police Officer with current P.O.S.T. certification (fully qualified pay level).

Key Result Areas:

Crime statistics and incident reports measure the level of safety and security on campus. Calls for service such as personal safety escorts, door unlocks, car battery boosts, and vehicle unlocks measure the amount of services provided to the campus community.

Scope of Responsibility:

Inadequate job performance could result in personal injury or death to a member of the campus community or visitor. Poor performance could result in stolen or damaged property or equipment that could greatly hinder regular college operations. Poor performance could also result in fines for non-compliance with government regulations and negative publicity for the college.

Physical Demands:

The police officer is required to meet the physical standards set by the TN P.O.S.T. Academy and Commission. The TN P.O.S.T. Commission requires police officers to complete 40 hours of In-Service training annually after initial P.O.S.T. certification. Manual dexterity is required for personal protection, weapons retention and proper use of authorized weapons. The police officer is required to wear a ballistic vest under the authorized uniform and a duty belt around their waist that supports their firearm and holster and other required equipment. The total weight of the ballistic vest, firearm and other equipment weighs approximately 25 pounds. The police officer is required to be able to stand on their feet for long periods of time, walk long distances around campus and climb at least three flights of stairs without becoming exhausted. Police officers are required to occasionally assist in lifting injured or aided persons and police equipment and office supplies.

Job Summary: The Public Safety Police Officer works under the direct supervision of the Public Safety Supervisor (Police Sergeants) for assigned shift. In conjunction with and under the direction of the Police Sergeants, the Public Safety Police Officer is responsible for ensuring work is performed according to departmental policies and standards. This position makes informed decisions, within established departmental guidelines, to serve the Medical Center community and provide a safe and secure environment for all patients, visitors and employees of the BIDMC community.
**Job Description:**
**Essential Responsibilities:**
1. Responsible for ensuring operational efficiency, planning, scheduling and incident response. He/she is responsible for maintaining community relations. Maintains a cooperative relationship with the Police Sergeants and the Public Safety staff. Exercises independent judgement.
2. Protection of life and property, prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals, and the enforcement of laws and ordinances. A police officer may be assigned to uniformed patrol, traffic control, crime prevention, investigative work, juvenile work, or other specialized departmental activity. Work involves an element of personal danger in the pursuit of duties.
3. Responsible for responding to the needs and inquiries of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center community, and strives for a safe and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors by providing security of buildings, grounds, and parking areas throughout Medical Center campus. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.
4. Patrols grounds and parking areas observing for violators, safety hazards, and unauthorized persons and may issue parking warnings and take other corrective actions for minor violations. Monitors access control, responds to calls for service, documents and responds to all unusual/routine occurrences as necessary.
5. Provides feedback and input to Public Safety Supervisors to support improvement in key areas including, but not limited to, patient watches, crime statistics, security response times, restraint information.
6. Responsible for promoting crime prevention amongst the security staff and proactive techniques to reduce crime, theft and loss of Medical Center property and work with other members of the Medical Center to reduce crime and create a safe and secure environment.
7. Collaborates with key managers and directors throughout the Medical Center in establishing and facilitating a secure and safe environment. Works closely with the Safety Department, Radiation Safety, and Psychiatry, Emergency Department and Media Services.
8. Assists clinical staff with patient restraints and transports patients to and from campus, designated areas.
9. Conducts investigation of incidents and writes investigative reports. Attends court when presence is required to successfully prosecute an arrest or summons
**Required Qualifications:**
1. High School diploma or GED required. Associate's degree in Criminal Justice preferred.
2. License MA ClassA Lrg capacity firearm required.
3. 1-3 years related work experience required.
4. Regularly meet BIDMC firearms qualification and police/BIDMC training standards required. Meet and maintain qualification standards set by State/Federal Govt, necessary for approval to access CJIS terminal points. Applicants must be a graduate of a Full-Time MA State Police Academy or Full-Time MPTC Academy or equivalent. At least 21 years old
5. Appointees must be eligible for appointment as a Special State Police Officer in accordance with M.G.L. ch.22 s. 63 Massachusetts Class A License to Carry. Massachusetts Drivers License. Candidates will be required to pass a comprehensive background check, psychological exam, drug test, and pre-employment medical exam
6. Flexibility and availability to work any shift including weekends/holidays required on short notice. Subject to frequent holdover and call back.
7. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

**Physical Nature of the Job:**
