Position Summary

The pump specialist performs mechanical and/or electrical maintenance on plant equipment to ensure optimal efficiency, reliability, and overall facility condition.

Responds to call-outs as needed to maintain plant availability. Primary responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and performance optimization of pumps and associated fluid handling systems. This includes centrifugal, positive displacement, and specialty pumps used in power generation, water treatment, thermal storage, or industrial process systems. The role focuses on ensuring equipment reliability, minimizing downtime, and maintaining safe and efficient plant operations. While primarily focused on boiler projects, they will also support maintenance activities, such as module maintenance, and plant improvement projects.

Supports planning efforts and inventory control by following proper requisition procedures for tools, parts, and supplies. Prepares reports as required by management and plant protocols. Maintains compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, and ensures adherence to plant safety and operational procedures. Actively promotes and maintains a safe and orderly work environment.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Skilled in aligning, assembling, and rebuilding pump systems, including impellers, seals, bearings, and couplings
  • Strong understanding of centrifugal and positive displacement pumps
  • Ability to troubleshoot vibration, overheating, cavitation, and seal failures
  • Familiar with lubrication practices, bearing inspections, and mechanical seal installations
  • Perform routine and emergency maintenance on pumps to keep the system operating in steady state conditions
  • Maintain accurate work orders, condition reports, and spare parts usage in CMMS
  • Participate in continuous improvement and reliability programs, including pump upgrades, material changes, or performance enhancements
  • Work closely with operations, engineering, and I&C teams during outages, commissioning, or troubleshooting efforts
Key Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; completion of technical/vocational training is strongly preferred.
  • 3+ years of mechanical maintenance experience, with specialization in pumps or rotating equipment
  • Experience working with pump skids, piping systems, and auxiliary components (filters, strainers, check valves, pressure gauges)
  • Capable of interpreting blueprints, P&IDs, mechanical drawings, and OEM service manuals
  • Familiarity with lubrication practices, bearing inspection, and mechanical seal installations
  • Proficient in laser alignment, soft foot correction, and shaft balancing for aligning, assembling, and rebuilding pump systems
Additional Qualifications Desired
  • Hands-on experience with maintenance of industrial steam boilers, battery storage systems, and high temperature fluid loops.
  • Experience with lifting equipment such as telehandlers and small cranes
  • Proficient in welding and/or operating machine tools such as lathes and mills.

Duties & Responsibilities
An employee in this class performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled work engaged in troubleshooting electrical and mechanical issues with pumps and controls. Work involves pulling, repairing, and replacing sewer & water pumps, electrical components, reviewing SCADA, keeping records related to maintenance. Active preventive maintenance to prevent premature failure of equipment. Assists WR Maintenance staff with maintenance at the pump stations in the Collections system. Employees are on-call and subject to call back work. This position is classified as Service Critical.
  • Operates digital multi-meters, amp meters, loop meters, and other related equipment to troubleshoot electrical issues.
  • Operates boom trucks, electric hoists, or hand cranked hoists to pull pumps for inspection, repair and/or replacement.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairequipmentlocated at the wastewater treatment plant and in the collections system: Cleans pumps, cleans wet wells, checks generators and bypass pumps.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses and repairs parts or equipment due to failure; troubleshoots, repairs, monitors and maintains the SCADA system and process control at the wastewater treatment plant.
  • Performs permit required confined space entries in manholes, wet wells, check valve vaults, meter vaults, and all other related water and sewer appurtenances.
  • Install temporary generators and bypass pumps as needed.
  • Creates and completes work orders utilizing the Towns current work order software.
  • Troubleshoots electrical and instrument equipment such as floats, relays, control panels and all other related structures at the wastewater treatment plant and pump stations in the collections system.
  • Installs and repairs variable speed drives, motorized valves, electrical and electronic panels.
  • Records pump hours and averages for review by the Plant Maintenance Superintendent and/or the Water Reclamation Superintendent.
  • Assists with the cleaning of the pump station wet wells in the collections system as needed.
  • Maintains necessary tools and inventory on departmental vehicles and keeps stocked.
  • Performs all other related tasks as directed.
  • Serves in the on-call rotation for the wastewater treatment plant and fills in as needed in the collections system lift station rotation.
