About the Role

As a Rail Yard Operator , you'll play a key role in railcar logistics managing track usage, coordinating car movement, and safely operating locomotives or Rail Kings.   • Mechanically inclined; able to make minor adjustments to equipment

  • Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and working outdoors in all weather

  • Valid Drivers License

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates a variety of heavy equipment in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
  • When assigned to public works, performs scheduled maintenance, repair, and service work on City streets, rights-of-ways, alleys, medians, storm water drainage systems, and retention basins; hauls, transports, loads and/or unloads various material and equipment associated with assigned projects.
  • Maintains dirt roads, shoulders, constructing and maintaining temporary parking lots; performs asphalt repair and replacement; excavates, sweeps, dumps, rakes, spreads, and rolls/compacts asphalt; performs all forms of concrete form setting, concrete placement, and concrete finishing related to street maintenance.
  • When assigned to Solid Waste, collects waste from containers by following assigned route, operating heavy equipment to pick up containers, emptying and transporting containers back to original location, picking up and disposing of debris and bulky items.
  • Maintains heavy equipment by conducting daily safety inspections of equipment, cleans and performs routine maintenance work on trucks and equipment; identifies and reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair; performs load inspections to prevent hazardous waste spills or dangerous road conditions.
  • Provides assistance with other routes, cleans facilities, delivers containers to customers, cleans inside of refuse containers, and providing information to customers as needed.
  • Completes required daily logs and reports.
  • Hauls materials, and transports vehicles and equipment to job sites using various trucks.
  • Loads and unloads materials using power equipment.
  • Performs skilled construction, maintenance, and labor work.
  • Resurfaces and grades and shapes roads.
  • Operates power equipment to collect trash and refuse.
  • May assist in overseeing the work of, and providing training and direction to, new employees.

Retirement Plans: City employees are assisted in planning for retirement in several ways. All employees, except firefighters, contribute a mandated percentage of their gross wages to the Social Security System and a Medicare tax, which is also matched by the City. In addition, all regular City employees are enrolled in a retirement plan, Public Safety Retirement for police officers and firefighters, and the Arizona State Retirement System for all others. + Tolerate and function in confined spaces of a minimum of five (5) foot inside diameter;
+ Hold the back thrust of 50lbs. on a straight 66" pipe for a minimum of one (1) hour;
+ Must be physically capable of using both negative pressure and air supplied respirators;
+ Duties include driving heavy equipment for long periods;
+ Must be able to wear protective clothing and/or equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, nomex coveralls, a back belt, slickers, rubber boots, a fresh air breathing mask and escape pack, and a hard hat;
+ Work under extreme climate conditions (excessive high heat index of 95+degree Fahrenheit, 98% humidity; and sub-zero weather conditions) relative to geographic location;

**Overview**
The Equipment Operator is responsible for operating any or all required construction equipment in the installation, removal or maintenance of underground systems on commercial projects. Installing and repairing all phases of plumbing systems; potable water, sanitary water and vent, natural gas and storm drainage systems in accordance with local and state plumbing and building codes.

Position Summary
The Equipment Operator's primary function is to operate heavy equipment at the site of work to construct, repair and maintain the railroad track. Operators are also expected to assist in other duties around the job site as needed. This position is considered as a novice level.
Pay range: $23 - $27 per hour/ depending on experience
Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties
+ I nspects, maintains, and operates maintenance equipment such as backhoes and loaders.
+ Operates equipment to move, load, or unload material or perform other rail related maintenance tasks.
+ Operates equipment in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with regulations, policies, and procedures.
+ Takes actions to avoid potential hazards and obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, and falling objects.
+ While operating equipment, communicate with others using verbal and non-verbal hand signals.
+ Complies with Company Safety Program
+ Keeps records of material and equipment usage and problems encountered.
+ Performs equipment safety, maintenance, and brake checks.
+ Fill out daily inspection report and turn into foreman on a daily basis.
+ Complete job briefs throughout the day as necessary with other employees in/around machine and work area.
+ Coordinates machine actions with other activities, positioning or moving loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members.
+ Locates underground services, such as pipes and wires, prior to beginning work.
+ Repairs and maintains equipment (including daily greasing), making emergency adjustments as necessary.
+ Studies instructions, plans, and diagrams to establish work requirements.
Required Skills and Qualifications
+ A minimum of one year experience operating heavy equipment in a construction environment.
+ Driver's license, reliable transportation, and available to travel.
+ Knowledge of and ability to adhere to safety requirements and procedures
+ Ability to read and understand construction specifications.
+ Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

+ Sits for long periods of time in a closed vehicle
