Position Description - What the Role Entails:

The Recovery Support Specialist (RSS) will provide peer support services to individuals with OUD, mental health challenges and other co-occurring disorders. The RSS will function as a role model to individuals by exhibiting competency in personal recovery and modeling the use of coping skills. The RSS will represent the agency at community events with the purpose of providing awareness of the services offered by RFS as well as facilitating admission to our programs.

  • Communicates with members of the clinical team when appropriate and needed for appropriate peer care.

  • Works with the team to identify programs and services that are conducive to recovery.
  • Completes all required program paperwork in an accurate, consistent, neat, and timely manner, following established program procedures.
  • Attend scheduled team meetings and actively participate in team.
  • Flexibility to adjust to changes in schedule based on documented needs.
  • Adhere to all state and federal privacy regulations, including HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2, and to Corporate Compliance policies and agreements regarding confidentiality, privacy, and security.
  • Support compliance with all privacy and security requirements pursuant to community partners' and outside providers' patient confidentiality agreements, including privacy and security requirements for EMR access. This includes immediate reporting of any PHI breach of Corporate Compliance or outside provider health records to the Corporate Compliance Legal and Quality departments, as well as to the program administrator.

Rincon's Work Environment - What to expect:

RSS will be expected to be ambulatory, but accommodations will be made as needed. Employees are responsible for informing supervisors of any invisible disability or medical restriction that limits physical capability. Light to moderate lifting.

Work environment: There may be occasions that call for an employee to carry out duties at other agency offices.

Schedule:

RSS schedules may change according to the task at hand. Base schedule is from 6:30am to 2:00pm Monday through Friday. Community events can be scheduled on the weekends and so the staff will arrange with the supervisor on how to adjust the schedule to meet the minimum 35-hour work week.

  • Required to maintain a valid Arizona driver's license and pass motor vehicle screening for insurance purposes in order to transport clients, based upon need/requirements of the clinic and/or program.
  • Prior experience as a recipient of Behavioral Health services.
  • Must have fingerprint clearance issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety or be eligible to receive within eight (8) weeks of hire (as required per program requirements)

This position requires working autonomously and as part of a team. The individual must be intrinsically motivated, flexible to shifts in priorities, and adaptive to changing work requirements.

The employee must demonstrate the ability to function in a computer-oriented office, including working knowledge of all relevant software. It is expected the employee maintain and improve job skills through training, education, seminars, and other activities designed to promote best practices about job duties. Employee will be expected to complete necessary reports including, but not limited to, time cards, leave requests, expense reports, benefit forms, transportation reports, etc.

The position is responsible for providing the following duties:

Assist guests in utilizing effective coping and self-help techniques.

Assist guests who have experienced social stigmatization with their sense of acceptance.

Document accurately, neatly, and consistently any and every contact with or on behalf of a guest.

Provide for confidentiality of records and communications, adhering to all applicable laws regarding confidentiality and privacy.

Provide assessments, problem-solving, side-by-side services, skills teaching, support, and environmental adaptations to assist guests with crises.

Provide instruction and skills training in illness and recovery management to guests and their families.

Assists guests in arranging transportation (to clinical, medical, and other necessary appointments).

This position may require driving the company vehicle and providing transportation to guests.

Utilize tools such as the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) to help guests create their person-centered recovery plan.

Assist guests in identifying and engaging in treatment services, self-help groups, community groups, faith-based groups, and other natural supports to expand guests' recovery support systems.

Help guests identify personal strengths in daily living and recovery and barriers to recovery goals.

Assist guests in building social, problem-solving, and coping skills.

Reports any behavior, observations, or actions that indicate a member may be suicidal, assaultive, or engaging in any behavior harmful to himself/herself or others through use of the incident report. Document any incidents, injuries or illnesses.

Help guests identify and overcome fears.

Collaborates and advocates with collateral sources, agencies, internal departments, bureaucracies, facilities, and families on behalf of members, Independence Center and the program/ department.

Provide outreach via phone, email, in person, and text to individuals per policy, to remove therapeutic ambivalence to treatment, follow up on referrals, and reduce any barriers that may remain.

Other duties as required as outlined by the Living Room Program Coordinator, Assistant Director, or Executive Director.

Requirements

  • Education: Requires a High School Diploma/ GED. An associate's degree in Health and Human Services or a comparable program is preferred. Must be certified as a Certified Recovery Support Specialist (CRSS) through the Illinois Certification Board or willing to pursue this certification. If not already a Certified Recovery Support Specialist, the Recovery Support Specialist must attend the next available CRSS training, complete the program requirements and pass the exam.
  • Previous clinical work experience in a health care, residential, and or acute care setting preferred.
  • All staff are required to attend in-service training designated by Independence Center as mandatory (compulsory) for the position held.
  • Must be self-motivated, organized, and comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Be a collaborative, solution-focused team player, must help facilitate safe client outcomes and contribute to institutional goals.
  • Punctuality and reliability are a must.
  • Valid driver's license and proof of insurability if required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide information to clients and family members on mental illness, recovery and wellness, treatment options, and resources.
  • Assist MFS clients and people the client/family identifies as their supports (with appropriate consent) e.g., significant others, parents, family, caregiver in their understanding the impact of mental health issues/symptoms and achieving the best possible outcomes for themselves/family member.
  • Works collaboratively within a team to provide a full range of services including:
  • Mental health case management and other related behavioral health and social determinants of health support

  • Reviewing results of client assessments/screenings and symptom checklists and supporting clients when needed to complete symptom checklists.

  • Services may be provided at an MFS site, virtually, or in the community.

  • Support clients when transitioning to another level of care.

A consumer of mental health services is needed to provide services to clients with mental illness and substance abuse issues within the Living Room program. The Living Room is a National, evidenced based hospital deflection program in which clients in crisis receive peer support to deescalate and restore healthy functioning without need for in-patient services. The Living Room is located in the South Suburbs and is open both during daytime and evening hours.

We are currently looking to fill a Recovery Support Specialist role at our Southwest office.

Overview

The Recovery Support Specialist is essential to the treatment team, providing peer support, addressing social needs, coordinating care, assisting with entitlements, and supporting overall wellness for members with complex and high risk needs. This role reports to the clinical leadership team.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Maintain a fluid caseload of a care team's highest risk and disengaged members, focusing on members early in treatment or members who are struggling with co-occurring mental health or social care challenges.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary care team, including participating in weekly interdisciplinary team meetings, to ensure the delivery of high quality, member-centered care.
  • Actively assist members in identifying goals, working towards their care plan goals through individual coaching, coping skill support, and treatment engagement support.
  • Complete intensive outreach interventions for members who are unengaged or struggling to engage.
  • Maintain open office hours at the Groups' office location. Assist members in person at the Groups' office location, virtually, and in the community as needed.
  • Help members prepare for and accompany them to local services as needed: primary care and mental health appointments, recovery support meetings, recovery centers, etc.
  • Become familiar with healthcare and social service resources in the local community.
  • Advocate for members, and serve as a link to community-based services and the local recovery community by helping clients navigate local care and support systems.
  • Facilitate peer groups related to members' recovery journey and community resources.
  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation in electronic health record.
  • Participate in ongoing continuing education as required to maintain certification or licensure where required.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Fluency with office technology, including G-Suite, email, electronic medical records, and software and mobile apps (e.g., Google Apps).
  • Share the Groups' values of member-centered care and harm-reduction practices.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to use motivational interviewing practices.
  • Knowledge and understanding of substance use treatment programs, assessments, evaluations, observations and care plans.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and maintain appropriate professional and personal boundaries with internal staff in a multidisciplinary care team, members in a diverse population, and with relevant community organizations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, positive interactions, and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate complex information.
  • Ability to use discretion and work independently under general supervision.
  • Ability to understand and adhere to the Professional Code of Conduct.
  • Strong advocacy skills along with knowledge of community based services, resources, and local recovery community.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • State peer support certification required or willing and able to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Additional minimal educational requirements vary by state, and may include:
    • Bachelor's degree in related field (Virginia and Tennessee)
  • Experience with case management, care navigation, peer support or alike positions.
  • Experience with community-based support and lived experience preferred.
  • Must meet pre-employment requirements and maintain all applicable state and job-related guidelines for background screening. Depending on state-specific requirements, this may include fingerprinting, drug testing, health screening, CPR/Basic First Aid and license/credential verifications.
  • For remote roles, access to reliable internet and telephone services, specifically 10M download and 5M upload package or higher as well as a strong WiFi signal from your remote work location.
  • Ability to travel to an office and within the community required.
