Our Community & Family Services Department is seeking to add a Community Recreation Specialist to their team! In this role you will be responsible to plan, coordinate and direct the various programs for the waiver respite and corresponding contract programs in Oneida County. You will work directly with groups of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in recreation settings within the community and agency.

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate opportunities for open communication between and among staff, families and people we support.
  • Research available community activities, schedule activities and provide the people we support and their families with monthly calendar of activities, as well as provide direct supervision during respite programming.
  • Provide supervision and oversight to program staff including Respite Specialists and volunteers.
  • Coordinate transportation for the hourly respite program by monitoring vehicle maintenance, mileage and fuel purchase information.
  • Participate in activities of daily living as necessary.
  • Ensure implementation of a person's habilitation plan utilizing as many appropriate resources in the person's community as possible.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED and three years experience
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred
  • Valid NY State Driver's License

This is a part-time, at-will position exempt from the classified service. The Recreation Specialist is distinguished from the Senior Recreation Leader for its responsibility for planning, organizing, scheduling and giving direct leadership and supervision for classes in a specialized phase of the recreation program or working in a specialized area in the department. This classification is further distinguished from Senior Recreation Leader in its responsibility for a broader range of recreation activities and services. The Recreation Specialist may be required to perform some or all of the following essential job duties:
  • Assisting with special event preparations and working the day of the event if assigned.
  • Developing and maintaining necessary specialized facilities and materials.
  • Keeping records of attendance and participation; promoting participation in recreation programs and community service programs.
Essential Job Functions
  • Display courteous and professional behavior and customer service toward all patrons, other employees and supervisors.
  • Respond promptly and courteously to inquiries from the public, outside agencies and employees.
  • Effectively communicate verbally and in writing to supervisor and staff.
  • Assist with special event preparations and work the day of the event if assigned.
  • Assists general recreation staff in the conduct of the activities compromising the specialty.
  • Develops and maintains necessary specialized facilities and materials.
  • Coordinates the specialized activity program with other recreation programs.
  • Registers participants and books facilities if required.
  • Plans a logical sequence of activities to fit the abilities and interests of participants.
  • Keeps records of attendance and participation; promotes participation in recreation programs and community service programs.
  • Effectively communicate to participants/patrons.
  • Supervise, train and evaluate general Recreation Staff. Assist with staff scheduling and shift coverage, as needed.
  • Assist with the general facility operations.
  • Monitor and maintain a clean and safe work environment, department equipment and supplies
  • Monitor and report abuse or maintenance needs at parks and recreation facilities, including vandalism and graffiti.
  • Ensure the safety of all park patrons and visitors on a daily basis through effective supervision.
  • Enforce Park Rules, Department Policy, and City Municipal Code, as necessary.
  • Assist in the maintenance and upkeep of parks and recreation facilities.
  • Assist in sports and recreational programming, organizing and implementing new programs, classes and camps.
  • Develops and/or monitors program budget and expenses to ensure proper resource allocation.
  • Ensure that Incident/Accident Reports are properly filled-out and are submitted in a timely fashion.
  • Assist Contract Instructors with the day-to-day needs of each program.
  • Assist with coordinating and scheduling field, facility and picnic reservations.
  • May be required to work weekends and holidays.
  • Observe all City rules and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications
EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of work experience in recreation, childcare, facilities set-up and operations, working with seniors, coaching or playing a sport, and/or volunteer work is required. Experience working in municipal recreation is desirable.

EDUCATION : A combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college or university including specialized training in a particular field of recreation activity.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Within six months of hire, obtain First Aid, CPR and AED Certifications through American Red Cross.

Knowledge of: Basic principles and purposes of recreational activity; methods, equipment and terminology in the particular recreation specialty.

Ability to:
  • Plan, organize and conduct various recreational, and cultural activities, events, and programs for all ages.
  • Prepare for scheduled activities, events, and programs and ensure that required paperwork, equipment and other materials are in order.
  • Plan and direct group activities aimed at developing appropriate group interaction encourage a sense of teamwork and fairness, interpersonal communication skills, and cooperation and ensure that order and discipline are maintained during recreational activities
  • Assure proper set-up of facility and safety of program participants; ensure proper procedures are followed in program activities, both with regard to safety and program goals.
  • Promote and publicize programs; prepare marketing material including flyers, schedules of events, brochures and activity guides.
  • Ensure proper behavior on the part of program participants; takes disciplinary action as needed; Respond quickly to potential hazardous situations and accidents; prepare reports related to incidents.
  • Supervise and coordinate the work activities Rec Leader II and Rec Assistant staff, such as training staff members and assigning work duties.
  • Encourage participants to develop their own activities and leadership skills through group discussions.
  • Assist with innovation, planning, promotion, implementation and evaluation of programs, activities and special events.
  • Respond to issues, concerns and complaints and resolve in a satisfying manner.

Primary Position Objectives

Responsible for developing, conducting, and supervising/chaperoning a wide variety of leisure-time activities for all students. Must be available evenings and weekends.


Position Responsibilities

Administration Procedures

• Assists with work involved in planning, organizing, and carrying out department’s total recreational services.

• Explains and demonstrates the uses of supplies and equipment, and the techniques and procedures used in the activity sessions.

• Exercises professional judgement and responsibility in the conduct of the specialty activities.

• Administers a well-rounded program of diversified activities in the assigned recreation component.

• Submits all supply needs, giving suggested source of supply to supervisor.

• Keeps a daily record of attendance in the assigned recreational activities, arts and crafts, movie, weight room, intramurals, etc.

• Maintains discipline, cleanliness and inventory control in assigned areas.

• Posts schedules of monthly activities and special events.

• Submits a schedule of special activities for the upcoming month to supervisor on the last Wednesday of each month.

• Submits list of monthly off-Center cultural activities and other events, which will be placed on the upcoming month’s calendar of off-Center trips.

• Maintains a stocked first aid kit in assigned area where it is clearly visible and accessible.

• Maintains recreational equipment.

• Assists in recruitment of volunteers and supervises and gives direction to any volunteer personnel assigned to the recreation area.

• Projects a positive self-image and encourages enthusiastic participation in recreation programs.

• Chaperones and directs off-Center trips and ensures necessary funds are available for the trips.

• Submits time sheets and other reports timely and according to Center policy.

• Assists with and trains student leaders according to Center policy.

• Follows CDSS plan and Code of Conduct system daily.

• Complies with all DOL guidelines, OFCCP regulation, Quality Assurance Plan (QAP) Bizzell policies and procedures, Job Corps notices and bulletins, and Center policies and procedures.

• Adheres to required property control policies and procedures.

• Maintains good housekeeping in all areas and complies with safety practices.

• Demonstrates and abides by The Bizzell Group’s core values and operating principles.

• Models, mentors, monitors appropriate Career Success Standards.

• Helps students become more employable through continuous reinforcement.

• Participates in PRH mandated staff training. Failure to participate may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Proficiency with advanced Microsoft Office applications including Word, Power Point, Outlook, and Excel. Computer Literacy with basic computer functions, email, internet, and basic programs such as Adobe Acrobat. High level of communication, interpersonal skills, and organizational skills. Knowledge of recreation activities, games, sports, arts and crafts etc.


Experience

Minimum of one to two years related experience and/or training. One-year related experience working with youth and young adults.


Education

Associate of arts degree or one year of related experience working with youth.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid State Driver’s License; valid Commercial Driver’s License Class B CDL with passenger endorsements. Lifeguard certificate preferred.

Therapeutic Recreation Specialist

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation's Therapeutic and Inclusive Recreation Services is excited to add a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist to the team! This position will educate, advocate, and support inclusion services across Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation. This position will also be responsible for providing community-based, goal oriented, and objective-driven recreation and leisure programs for individuals with disabilities. The incumbent will also perform individual client assessments and evaluate and assess community programming needs. The selected candidate must currently have credentials that include Licensed Recreational Therapist (North Carolina Board of Recreational Therapy Licensure) and Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (National Council for Therapeutic Recreation) certification. This full-time position will be based at Ivory/Baker Recreation Center and will work a varying schedule including weekdays, evenings and weekends based on business needs.

Position Summary: Provide therapeutic recreational activities for all residential patients. Provide continuity of program services in an ethical, legal and moral manner within a safe environment, consistent with applicable regulatory and accreditation standards. Participate as a team member in the delivery of services to patients and their families.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Work hours prescribed by the program administrator and any additional hours deemed necessary for the responsibilities assigned.
  2. Develops, plans, implements, and evaluates group experiential therapy programming in designated treatment program/s under direct clinical supervision
  3. Completes documentation in the client record within prescribed time frame
  4. Participates with interdisciplinary clinical staffing and contributes to the client treatment plan
  5. Provides leadership in planning and implementing recovery enhancement and recreational activities
  6. Conduct staff education/trainings on the role of experiential therapies
  7. Attends mandated facility training.
  8. Provides courteous, high quality service to Rosecrance employees, representative of outside agencies and members of the public by providing accurate, complete and up-to-date information, in a courteous, efficient and timely manner.
  9. Assume other related responsibilities as assigned by management.
  10. Understand and comply with all of the principles established by the Rosecrance Corporate Compliance Program and Code of Conduct.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements:

  • Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Art Therapy, Leisure Studies or other related therapies.
  • Hold CTRS (Preferred) or other approved discipline- specific credential or eligible to obtain within 2 years.
  • Experience in experiential therapies and/or behavioral health setting preferred.
