Qualifications

Job Description Summary

The Research & Development (R&D) Director is responsible for leading the development of new products and improving all aspects of quality manufacturing process of confectionary products in all See's manufacturing locations. Leads effective teams in Los Angeles and San Francisco facilities that work cross functionally with Operations and Engineering to develop new confections, improve product, and process and troubleshoot quality issues. Job Description Key Responsibilities
  • Develops new products and leads a team that development new products. This includes developing bench top samples in the R&D lab and scaling approved bench top samples to the manufacturing floor. This includes supporting development of nutritional labels for newly developed products, as needed.
  • Evaluates new processing equipment and new processes in both LA and SF to ensure product performs to See's established specifications for flavor, appearance, texture and color throughout its shelf life.
  • Monitors and leads a team that monitors production of candy to ensure candy flavor, appearance, and texture produced meets expectations.
  • Plays key role in investigating all quality problems with the candy in equipment, processes, ingredients, and formula compliance. Analyzes rejected or scrapped product; works with FSQA and Operations teams to trend collected data and determine root cause. Identifies opportunities for product/process improvement and cost reduction.
  • Trains and develops people at all levels (from shop floor to management) on manufacturing confections skills.
  • Ensures change management and process improvement as the Food Safety and Process Improvement Champion.
  • Integrally involved in waste reduction as part of process improvement. Reduces waste caused by poor production situations, or generated during the course of making candy. Also looks for usage opportunities of high-quality ingredients that are deemed unusable for other reasons (splits on nuts, pieces instead of halves, leftover raw materials from special items, etc.)
  • Ensures there are written, detailed finished product specifications for shop floor in all manufacturing plants to support consistency in product quality and performance. Also generates specs for company-wide use.
  • Responsible for ensuring effective and accurate maintenance of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) manufacturing recipes.
  • Evaluates raw materials from new suppliers to ensure consistency with the spec for each piece; participates in qualifying/review of new suppliers for ongoing supply.
  • Part of the sensory group that tastes produced product and ingredients to ensure consistency with Company expectations.
  • Establishes/confirms shelf life of ingredients, intermediate/work in progress (WIP) products and finished goods through structured studies and tests, including sensory evaluation. Communicates progress to all departments associated with projects in writing and/or in person, as situation dictates.
  • Assists in new process development as assigned.
  • Supports FSQA in the assessment of raw material quality as the resident technical expert of our products and process. Works with Process Development, Operations, and FSQA on improving machinability of existing products and/or raw material performance.
  • Improves and maintains written product formulas. Audits current product formulas and revises them as needed to ensure they are adequately detailed to yield consistency in manufacturing steps and product quality.
  • Develops and maintains ingredient specifications in collaboration with FSQA, Procurement and Suppliers.
  • Pulls random samples of product from local shops and leads "product-cutting" with FSQA and Operations, to evaluate the quality of products that have gone through warehousing and distribution processes.
  • Participates with FSQA in evaluating packs pulled from inventory (warehouses) at start, mid-point and end of shelf life to ensure product is performing as expected through shelf life.
  • Maintains timely and accurate records of all product/process improvement activities and supplier visits. Generates monthly status report of improvements accomplished.
  • Attends and participates in the daily Operational meeting in LA and SF (as needed), plus other designated meetings on an as-needed basis.
  • This leader's success will come from people and process; developing positive working relationships and using a collaborative approach will ensure overall success.
  • Completes other duties and special projects as requested by management.

What Will You Do?

Product Portfolio Strategy Development

  • Develop strong relationships with OCL customers including lighting designers, architects, and key market stakeholders, especially in top revenue-generating regions, via customer visits, conferences, trade shows, etc.
  • Develop and maintain a 1 to 3-year portfolio roadmap and identify key areas for growth
  • Assess product concepts and determine investment-worthiness via detailed business analysis

Product Development Activities

Qualifications

Education:

Leadership of prospect identification and research includes the design, planning, and implementation of strategic data-driven identification of prospective donors, the execution of dynamic wealth and propensity reviews, and the development of operational plans to support fundraising at Brookings. The Director leads the teams due diligence research efforts, guiding research methodology and deliverables, as well as oversight for the intake, tracking, and notification processes. The Director sets strategic goals for the research operation, including annual quantitative and qualitative goals for the program, team, and individuals. Job Summary

The Director of Product Development is a supervisory role responsible for the oversight, timely execution and management of all internal and external development projects starting from project initiation through FDA approval and transfer to the commercial manufacturing site, if applicable. Responsibilities

* Oversee portfolio projects through all phases of development including diligence, planning, API selection, legal assessments, literature reviews, execution, FDA filing, approval, and successful transfer to commercial sites
* Oversee the timely development of drug product formulations and manufacturing processes which meet FDA stability and bioequivalence requirements and are capable of being produced at commercial scale

* Oversee the design and execution of detailed experiments using risk assessments, appropriate target product profiles, QbD principles, and process characterization/modeling techniques to develop and understand development processes, whether internally or externally developed

* Manage resources to ensure timely completion of projects within budget, including oversight of external partners
* Collaborate with other R&D scientific leaders to ensure project specific requirements are met
* Provide guidance and advice in cross-functional meetings
* Work with external partners and provide guidance and assistance as needed
* Oversee the entire clinical plan for each project, including studies needed, trial design, number of participants, etc.
* Oversee the clinical staff to ensure timely conduct of clinical trials and compliance to study protocol, applicable guidances and SOPs
* Review statements of work (SOW), payment terms and milestones
* Reviews clinical study protocols, reports and summary tables for ANDA/ IND/NDA/ filings
* Coordinate alignment on the final clinical study protocol for execution
* Oversee the execution of study timelines
* Oversee the receipt of final study reports in FDA compliant format and help resolve any issues identified, as needed
* Oversee the clinical trial permission application process to foreign regulatory agencies and assist in export of investigational products to clinical CROs in foreign countries
* Oversee multidisciplinary activities for successful clinical trial applications and conduct of clinical studies
* Assist in monitoring clinical studies onsite or remotely and/or appoint external monitors to monitor study conduct on-site
* Review and approval monitoring reports
* Oversee the CRO selection process
* Lead, develop and mentor scientists in support of the company's goals for the pipeline portfolio
* Lead the PD function to develop and implement strategies for driving programs towards key milestones and objectives
* Prepare, review and approve performance reviews, performance improvement plans, disciplinary actions, job descriptions, training plans, and employee development plans
* Set and assess department and individual review goals
* Oversee training and personal development programs for department employees
* Influence, motivate, and energize employees at all levels
* Maintain expertise in product development and regulatory requirements
* Interact with key stakeholders (Operations, Quality, Commercial, Analytical, Clinical, Regulatory, External Partners, etc.) to define and optimize business processes maximizing agility and consistency
* Participate with the leadership team in charting the future direction and growth of the organization, hiring, resourcing, budget, etc.
