Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Support R&D and New Product Introduction (NPI) projects as they move through the development cycle. Coherent's R&D engineers focus heavily on the early stages of technology and product development, but they also provide critical technical support to products and customers as they move through the NPI process and into volume release.
- Execute basic technology maturation projects in support of the Technology Roadmap, through modeling and experimental work.
- Construct testbeds to explore pre-commercial product concepts for feasibility, performance, cost etc.
- Perform product testing to verify the functionality and performance of Coherent's products.
- Conduct simulation, modeling and analysis in support of product development and problem-solving activities.
- Engage with our marketing team to capture product requirements and specifications, and support our customers, and our marketing, management and sales teams.
- Provide technical support to resolve product issues affecting our customers, our factory, or our supply chain
Education & Experience
- Proven problem solver with a mindset to constantly pursue the basic understanding or root cause of problems.

- Technical depth in at least two of the following engineering disciplines -optical/laser systems, systems engineering, mechanical, plasma physics, electrical/electronic, controls & software. The successful candidate will demonstrate an eagerness and ability to acquire new technical disciplines as needed.
- An advanced degree (MS or higher) in physics, applied physics, precision mechanical engineering, electrical engineering (photonics focus), optical science & engineering, materials science & engineering, or a related field. PhD. Preferred, or with equivalent experience.

Working Conditions

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Develop and refine print parameters for various metals (e.g., Ti-64, Inconel 718, C103) across multiple additive platforms (LPBF, DMLS).
- Lead experimental builds, analyze output, and implement feedback loops to optimize print quality and mechanical performance.
- Design and execute material qualification plans, including tensile, fatigue, and creep testing in collaboration with internal and external labs.
- Apply metallurgical analysis (SEM, EDS, XRD, microscopy) to evaluate build integrity, powder characteristics, and defect mitigation strategies.
- Partner with manufacturing and quality teams to transition R&D outcomes into production workflows.
- Conduct root cause analysis and corrective action for anomalies in printed components.
- Collaborate on DoD and aerospace projects, contributing technical documentation and test reports for customer and regulatory approval.
- Stay up-to-date on the latest developments in AM standards, equipment, and materials and integrate them into our process development roadmap.

Job Summary:
AFIT conducts research related to nuclear survivability for U.S. Nuclear Enterprise mission partners. These projects execute research & development, analysis, and technology maturation for problems of interest to DOD stakeholders. The objective of this MS level research position is to conduct research of interest to AFIT's mission partners.
Key Responsibilities:

Position Summary
The primary responsibility of this position is to support the development and administration of state grant programs that support the creation of technologies to expand the waste tire market and fund demonstration projects aimed at increasing the use of waste tires. This role is vital for driving innovation and fostering sustainable solutions for waste tire management throughout New York State and beyond. The successful candidate will play a major role in managing these grant programs, collaborate with stakeholders, and guide the development of both technology initiatives and demonstration projects focused on expanding the use of waste tires.
In addition to managing the tire recycling program, the research engineer will support the broader mission of the Institute by fostering relationships with stakeholders in industry, academia, and government, conducting research on market trends, opportunities, and barriers to new technologies, assisting in the preparation of proposals for securing government or private funding, and contributing to other Institute initiatives as needed.

Primary Responsibilities
- Support the development and oversight of a state-funded grant program for waste tire management and the expansion of recycling markets. This includes designing and administering the grant application process, establishing criteria and evaluating proposals, and overseeing the selection and contracting of recipients.
- Establish clear objectives, timelines, and milestones for grant recipients. Monitor progress and ensure that projects remain within scope, budget, and timeframe. Conduct site visits and inspections as necessary to evaluate project outcomes and compliance.
- Provide technical expertise and guidance to applicants and stakeholders, ensuring that the proposed technologies or solutions meet industry needs and demonstrate feasibility, scalability, and sustainability.
- Submit all necessary reporting to state and regulatory bodies. Ensure all activities comply with state laws, regulations, and grant guidelines.
- Build strong relationships and promote engagement with stakeholders from industry, academia, and government agencies.
- Promote knowledge sharing and best practices in the rubber and tire recycling industry.
- Conduct online research to identify market trends, evaluate market opportunities and identify technical, economic, environmental and institutional barriers to the implementation and deployment of new technologies relevant to building a circular economy
- Assist in the preparation of proposals to obtain government and/or private funding of new projects or initiatives
- Assist in other Institute deliverables as needed
Required Skills and Experience
- Experience in one of the following areas:
- Markets for recycled products, preferably rubber
- Technologies for tire recycling
- Rubber compound formulations and manufacturing processes
- Regulations governing waste tire disposal
- Familiarity with New York State businesses involved in tire disposal, recycling, and related activities
- Experience working with federal and/or state agencies, with a preference for candidates who have managed government-funded grant programs
- Project management experience with technical projects in a research environment preferred
- Capable of conducting technology assessments for new and emerging technologies using tools such as technoeconomic analysis, net energy analysis, Lifecyle analysis, and market opportunity analysis.
- Benchmarking of new or emerging technology relative to the state-of-the-art
- Ability to systematically analyze complex, technology centric problems, identify technical, economic, market, and institutional barriers to the adoption of emerging technologies, and develop and implement effective solutions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, and ability to convey complex information in a way that others can readily understand
