**The Division of Trauma Surgery at Banner University Medical Center Phoenix (BUMCP)** is seeking a midcareer Trauma and Acute Care Surgeon with a strong track record in clinical research and academic leadership. This unique role combines high-volume clinical care with the opportunity to shape research strategy and mentor trainees in an academic, multidisciplinary environment.
**About the Institution:**
BUMCP is a 766-bed, Magnet-recognized, ACS-verified Level 1 Trauma Center (adult-only), affiliated with the University of Arizona College of Medicine Phoenix. The Trauma Division includes 12 faculty, 10 APPs, and provides comprehensive trauma, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care services. The division is actively expanding elective surgery volume and integrating advanced surgical technologies.

Job Description Summary

The Research & Development (R&D) Director is responsible for leading the development of new products and improving all aspects of quality manufacturing process of confectionary products in all See's manufacturing locations. Leads effective teams in Los Angeles and San Francisco facilities that work cross functionally with Operations and Engineering to develop new confections, improve product, and process and troubleshoot quality issues. The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $205k to $229k per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Job Description Key Responsibilities
  • Develops new products and leads a team that development new products. This includes developing bench top samples in the R&D lab and scaling approved bench top samples to the manufacturing floor. This includes supporting development of nutritional labels for newly developed products, as needed.
  • Evaluates new processing equipment and new processes in both LA and SF to ensure product performs to See's established specifications for flavor, appearance, texture and color throughout its shelf life.
  • Monitors and leads a team that monitors production of candy to ensure candy flavor, appearance, and texture produced meets expectations.
  • Plays key role in investigating all quality problems with the candy in equipment, processes, ingredients, and formula compliance. Analyzes rejected or scrapped product; works with FSQA and Operations teams to trend collected data and determine root cause. Identifies opportunities for product/process improvement and cost reduction.
  • Trains and develops people at all levels (from shop floor to management) on manufacturing confections skills.
  • Ensures change management and process improvement as the Food Safety and Process Improvement Champion.
  • Integrally involved in waste reduction as part of process improvement. Reduces waste caused by poor production situations, or generated during the course of making candy. Also looks for usage opportunities of high-quality ingredients that are deemed unusable for other reasons (splits on nuts, pieces instead of halves, leftover raw materials from special items, etc.)
  • Ensures there are written, detailed finished product specifications for shop floor in all manufacturing plants to support consistency in product quality and performance. Also generates specs for company-wide use.
  • Responsible for ensuring effective and accurate maintenance of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) manufacturing recipes.
  • Evaluates raw materials from new suppliers to ensure consistency with the spec for each piece; participates in qualifying/review of new suppliers for ongoing supply.
  • Part of the sensory group that tastes produced product and ingredients to ensure consistency with Company expectations.
  • Establishes/confirms shelf life of ingredients, intermediate/work in progress (WIP) products and finished goods through structured studies and tests, including sensory evaluation. Communicates progress to all departments associated with projects in writing and/or in person, as situation dictates.
  • Assists in new process development as assigned.
  • Supports FSQA in the assessment of raw material quality as the resident technical expert of our products and process. Works with Process Development, Operations, and FSQA on improving machinability of existing products and/or raw material performance.
  • Improves and maintains written product formulas. Audits current product formulas and revises them as needed to ensure they are adequately detailed to yield consistency in manufacturing steps and product quality.
  • Develops and maintains ingredient specifications in collaboration with FSQA, Procurement and Suppliers.
  • Pulls random samples of product from local shops and leads "product-cutting" with FSQA and Operations, to evaluate the quality of products that have gone through warehousing and distribution processes.
  • Participates with FSQA in evaluating packs pulled from inventory (warehouses) at start, mid-point and end of shelf life to ensure product is performing as expected through shelf life.
  • Maintains timely and accurate records of all product/process improvement activities and supplier visits. Generates monthly status report of improvements accomplished.
  • Attends and participates in the daily Operational meeting in LA and SF (as needed), plus other designated meetings on an as-needed basis.
  • This leader's success will come from people and process; developing positive working relationships and using a collaborative approach will ensure overall success.
  • Completes other duties and special projects as requested by management.
  • Responsible for identifying opportunities to enhance technology and innovation that will improve departmental effectiveness.

Minimum Qualifications

With limited supervision from the R&D Director, the R&D Manager is responsible for managing analytic labs, supporting technical services at mills and converters, and leading product development initiatives from concept through commercialization.

Relocation assistance is available for this position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct analytical analysis of samples using FTIR, GCMS, Optical Microscope, and all Tappi-based test equipment.
  • Lead investigations utilizing both internal and external analytical resources.
  • Provide expertise in board and converting to offer recommendations based on sample analytics.
  • Collaborate with teams to troubleshoot board, coating, converting, and printing technical issues.
  • Support new product development (NPD) initiatives for the mill division and AMC as needed.
  • Conduct competitive analysis including board comparisons, business models, competitor capabilities, and future capacity.
  • Offer technical insight into proposed capital equipment installations.
  • Establish and maintain key relationships with suppliers.
  • Assist in the development of existing and new GPI packaging concepts, focusing on manufacturability.
  • Lead coating, calendaring, and wet-end trials at mills.
  • Develop cost models for new paperboard machinery and processes, including capital estimation and requirements.
  • Provide engineering expertise to support R&D activities aligning with new business objectives.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining focus on customer commitments and timelines.
  • Prepare and present detailed reports and presentations on project progress to senior staff and customers.
  • Engage with customers during concept, design, and process development phases for new packaging initiatives.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Expertise in paper and paperboard physical properties and coating technology.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. and safely operate in a manufacturing environment, including handling industrial chemicals and machinery.
  • Strong verbal communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage effectively with customers, teams, and executive leadership.
  • Willingness to travel (1-2 trips per month).

Pay Range: $104,325.00 - $139,100.00

A brief overview

The Research and Development Manager serves a cross functional role within the organization. This individual drives research and development activities with his/her creativity, enthusiasm and expertise in peptide chemistry. He/she makes key contributions to maintain and increase the technical skill level for the efficient production of peptides and holds responsibility for the process development and manufacturing of peptides and other novel products.

What you will do

  • Plan, prioritize and oversee synthesis of catalog and custom products

  • Evaluate new technologies for the benefit of peptide production

  • Investigate new processes and products

  • Improve processes for existing products- economy, safety and ecology

  • Explore and apply new technologies and instrumentation for peptide manufacturing (e.g. using automation) and facilitate implementation in Production

  • Supervise and guide staff to meet quality requirements and timelines, and to comply with SOPs

  • Evaluate performance of staff and train staff

  • Make conscious and efficient use of resources

  • Document results for the benefit of production and other departments

  • Stay on top of new developments in commercial peptide synthesis

  • Present concepts and results during discussions with customers


Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in organic chemistry or biochemistry with relevant work experience

  • PhD in organic chemistry (preferred)

  • Minimum 3 years experience in peptide chemistry in an industrial setup

  • Management experience from previous role(s) (preferred)

  • Thorough understanding of the peptide manufacturing process and equipment

  • Proven track record of scientific achievements

  • Broad knowledge of modern organic chemistry

  • Routinely work with hazardous materials and manage hazardous waste in a satellite accumulation area

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Basic computer knowledge, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Ability to effectively organize, multitask, and work in a fast-paced, deadline driven work environment

  • Ability to communicate in a proactive and solution-focused manner, including keeping management aware of potential issues

  • Detail oriented with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems

  • Ability to work independently and manage ones time

  • Communicate effectively and ability to function well in a team environment


Base Annual Salary Range:

Manager $126,800 - $74,350

Sr. Manager: 136.640 - 187,880

Placement of new hires in these wage ranges is based on several factors including education, skill sets, experience, and training.

Specialist Technical Services Chemist

Summary :

Responsible for the collection and protection of intellectual property, technical customer support, review and approval of numerous key documents and processes involved in the development of new personal care products. This position requires a science background and an analytical mind with an eye for detail-oriented work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Safety: Your compliance and enforcement of all company safety rules, procedures and guidelines is essential. Reporting of safety issues is mandatory.
  • Provide internal and external customer technical support via information and document creating, gathering, dissemination. Manage the collection and dissemination of information for customer specific systems including the Wal-Mart ProSpec and Sam's Club HIVE systems.
  • Management and maintenance of formulations software including, but not limited to collecting, entering, and updating product formulations, raw materials, components, and vendors.
  • Review & Approval of key developmental documents which have high impact within the organization and must be accurate: Ingredient Statements, Specification Setups, SAP Group BOM entries, Raw Material Setups, Quantitative Ingredient Statements
  • Out of Specification investigations including customer 3 rd party testing deviations.
  • Alternate Raw Material review/approval.
  • Conversion project form generation.
  • National Brand evaluations and Competitor analysis - physical property testing and organoleptics evaluation.
  • Provide technical support to lab personnel including but not limited to: Triangle evaluations, Optiva and SAP assistance, equipment function training.
  • Submission of products for 3rd party review
  • Reviewing and repurposing UL reports
  • Archival of raw material and product documentation in multiple systems
  • Equipment calibration and maintenance as needed: Viscometers, pH Meters, Thermometers, Incubators
  • Store checks: Shopping for national brand samples as needed for national brand evaluations, 3rd party testing, special projects, etc.

Education Requirements:

A Bachelors Degree in Chemistry or related science; three years of related experience and/or training; or combination of 10 years education and experience

Experience Requirements:
  • At least 3 years of laboratory work or Quality Systems Auditing experience is required in addition to the education requirement.
  • Proficient in Excel; basic understanding Word
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, and ratios to practical situations

  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a fast paced high volume environment required
