The Emory National Primate Research Center (ENPRC/EPC) of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, has an immediate opening for a faculty equivalent position for either an Asst. or Assoc. Research Professor (Colony Director) with a background and interest in nonhuman primate social behavioral management and biomedical research as well as managerial experience.
The ENPRC is a major biomedical research institution that is rapidly expanding with its main facilities at Emory University's Atlanta campus and 117-acre Field Station in Lawrenceville. **This position will be based at the Field Station in Lawrenceville, Georgia** . Dedicated to discovering causes, preventions, treatments, and cures of disease, Emory National Primate Research Center (EPC) is improving human and animal health and lives worldwide. Working within ENPRC Division of Animal Resources, the qualified candidate will provide leadership to the Colony Management department consisting of the Colony Manager, Supervisors and Research Specialists. This is a senior level management and research position with a blend of administrative and research responsibilities. The candidate will be expected to develop and implement a colony focused research program and provide mentorship to junior associates and colleagues. The candidate will be proposed for an academic appointment within the Emory School of Medicine. Will report to the Associate Director of Animal Resources and liaise with the Assistant Director of Animal Resources at the Field Station for all animal resources and colony management issues.
The successful candidate should be professional, personable, motivated, dependable, detail-oriented, have a positive attitude and passion for research. They will provide oversight for resource management related to nonhuman primates: monitoring production, morbidity and mortality, developing statistical metrics for animal production colonies to sustain colony size while simultaneously providing animals to meet Center-wide research programs. Will take a lead role in departmental planning, enhancing productivity and the collection of high-quality, systematic data. The individual will have principal management responsibility for the Colony Management personnel. Will be Key Personnel on the ENPRC Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) rhesus macaque breeding colony grant and will assist with oversight of the SPF program. Will contribute to grant writing for resource grants related to the Field Station. Works with the ENPRC geneticist to develop and implement genetic based management strategies to enhance the rhesus macaque and sooty mangabey colonies. Meet with principal investigators to coordinate research needs and serve as a primary contact for study planning and implementation. Develop metrics to assess and report on unit performance and goal achievements to support growth and promotion of personnel. Responsible for departmental budget: monitoring expenditures, developing budget proposals, and preparing necessary documentation for supervisor review/approval. Provide recommendations to management regarding breeding colony policies and activities such as SOP development or modification. In consultation with the Colony Manager, will be responsible for hiring, evaluation, training and promotions for all direct and indirect reports.
Will also develop and implement a research program congruent with Field Station and colony management research goals. Degree and /or post-doctoral training should be in an area that is compatible with existing resources. Strongly prefer research background in areas such as social behavior in nonhuman primate species, reproductive medicine or epidemiology with strong writing skills. The candidate's interests and background will determine the research focus of this position.
**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS** :
+ The ideal candidate will have a PhD or DVM degree in a relevant field, plus 5 years' experience in social behavioral management or biomedical research in one or more relevant species, and extensive managerial expertise.
+ Working knowledge of statistical forecasting methodology strongly preferred.

The Department of Emergency Medicine is led by Andrew E. Muck, MD, MBA, and includes adult care, pediatric care, and active air and ground transport programs. There is an established emergency medicine residency program and fellowships in Medical Toxicology, EMS, Cardiovascular Emergencies, Ultrasound, Research, Administration, Global Health, and Education. The UVA Health System is a 700-bed tertiary care and Level 1 trauma center with an annual ED census of 75,000 located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Charlottesville, Virginia, a city that has been rated as one of the best places to live in the United States.
The department is seeking candidates that are focused on providing highly experienced strategic input, support, and leadership to research teams within the Department of Emergency Medicine and in collaboration with other teams, departments, organizations, and agencies. This position will be required to engage with department leadership, physicians, and others at various professional levels to negotiate, influence, and consult on a wide range of projects, protocol standards, effective and efficient research processing, and study techniques and standards. This position is expected to be a leader within the research team and communicate with the department leadership research findings, new available research, and designs and techniques that will improve data functionality, research methodologies, and other areas of research that could be of interest for the department.
Furthermore, this position will be required to take primary support leadership in preparation of research outcome reports, clinical research application documentation, grant application production, and other project needs such as abstracts, biosketch reviews, poster and presentation reviews, as well as publication and documentation needs. This position will be rewarded by acknowledgement with involved research outcomes, peer-reviewed scientific publications, and as allowed with funding and primary investigation opportunities.
Additionally, this position will be required to speak with persons individually to presentations in large groups; therefore, being comfortable and professional in these settings will be required.
The position is open to individuals with a Ph.D. or other terminal doctorate-level degree that is eligible for appointment to the University of Virginia faculty. Candidates with education in healthcare administration, data sciences, life sciences, or similar areas are encouraged to apply.
Successful applicants will need to demonstrate recent applicable research in areas directly engaging emergency medicine, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, trauma biomechanics, and automotive safety, epidemiology, toxicology, trauma, cardiovascular emergency, international medical activities, nursing, or other closely related field of study. The applicant should have long-standing experience in the field of drug discovery and development with some familiarity in translational cancer research. The applicant should be skilled in _in vitro_ techniques specifically 2D and 3D cell system, molecular biology, gene editing, microscopy, -omics, and animal studies. The candidate should also be fully trained in current cutting-edge technology including CRISPR/Cas9 mediated gene editing and should be able to apply these techniques to the field of drug development, or at the least help guide laboratory development of methodologies in these areas. Ideally, the candidate should also have experience in the development of nanotechnologies applied to cancer research, and in the methodologies deployed to study these drug candidates in various _in vivo_ models. We anticipate that research with this group of investigators will require a candidate able to merge all these different aspects of cancer research and new drug development.
Appropriate candidates will contribute to developing research grant proposals and may pursue independent research funding that complements ongoing lab research. Successful candidates must have effective oral and written communication skills as evidenced by a solid track record of scientific manuscripts and presentations.
