Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for managing complex research projects.
  • Using an advanced knowledge of research methodology and techniques, assists in the planning and development of survey instruments, guidelines and procedures to collect required data.
  • Coordinates various aspects of the study.
  • Drafts and may edit text for studies.

  • May oversee regulatory compliance efforts.

  • Coordinates computer support for ancillary studies conducted at off-site locations.
  • Collaborates on reports and papers.
  • Assists in the preparation of tables and graphs for publication and presentation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A master's degree in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, sociology, and psychology or related discipline and two years of professional level research experience, OR an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

SUMMARY:

The Manager, Research Projects is responsible for managing complex Operational Research (OR) projects of the River Blindness, Lymphatic Filariasis, Schistosomiasis, and Malaria Programs, including OR during onchocerciasis post-treatment surveillance (e.g., black fly entomology) and lymphatic filariasis post-validation surveillance across Africa, the Americas, and other parts of the world, as needed. Serving as research coordinator, the Manager, Research Projects liaises with the institutional review board (IRB) and implements research projects with quality, safety, and ethical considerations in strict adherence to the approved protocols.

As a member of the Epidemiology, Research, and Innovation team, the Manager, Research Projects reports directly to the Senior Associate Director for Research for the team and receives technical guidance from Epidemiologists on project-specific tasks that the Epidemiologists may be leading. Works closely with The Carter Center country offices and external partners to support the administration of the compliance, procurement, financial, conduct, and other related aspects of the research.

This Atlanta-based position requires some domestic and international travel an an ability to travel without restriction. Due to the travel requirement, Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) will be required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages complex research projects, overseeing administrative activities, coordinating project work plans, and ensuring adherence to regulations and deadlines.

  • Collaborates with the Sr. Associate Director - Research, Program Epidemiologist, and Data Analysts to plan, execute, and monitor research activities.

  • Maintains and documents study data and systems, analyzes data to identify discrepancies, researches causes, and prepares reports, tables, and graphs to assess study performance.

  • Oversees study budgets, procurement needs, and financial reporting; may develop and submit grant proposals and monitor expenses for active protocols.

  • Leads the development and updating of research protocols, determining necessary modifications to methodologies and tools.

  • Manages all aspects of IRB and ethical review processes, including protocol submissions, updates, continuing reviews, study close-outs, and staff certifications; serves as liaison to ethical review committees.

  • Develops and facilitates training for field teams and supervisors; supervises and mentors students, interns, and consultants involved in program activities.

  • Coordinates regular meetings and presentations to highlight research progress and collaborates on the preparation of reports and publications.

  • Provides leadership and guidance to staff, fostering effective study implementation and supporting progress toward strategic research goals.

Basic Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

Research & Development Manager

With limited supervision from the R&D Director, the R&D Manager is responsible for managing analytic labs, supporting technical services at mills and converters, and leading product development initiatives from concept through commercialization. Relocation assistance is available for this position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct analytical analysis of samples using FTIR, GCMS, Optical Microscope, and all Tappi-based test equipment.
  • Lead investigations utilizing both internal and external analytical resources.
  • Provide expertise in board and converting to offer recommendations based on sample analytics.
  • Collaborate with teams to troubleshoot board, coating, converting, and printing technical issues.
  • Support new product development (NPD) initiatives for the mill division and AMC as needed.
  • Conduct competitive analysis including board comparisons, business models, competitor capabilities, and future capacity.
  • Offer technical insight into proposed capital equipment installations.
  • Establish and maintain key relationships with suppliers.
  • Assist in the development of existing and new GPI packaging concepts, focusing on manufacturability.
  • Lead coating, calendaring, and wet-end trials at mills.
  • Develop cost models for new paperboard machinery and processes, including capital estimation and requirements.
  • Provide engineering expertise to support R&D activities aligning with new business objectives.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining focus on customer commitments and timelines.
  • Prepare and present detailed reports and presentations on project progress to senior staff and customers.
  • Engage with customers during concept, design, and process development phases for new packaging initiatives.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Expertise in paper and paperboard physical properties and coating technology.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. and safely operate in a manufacturing environment, including handling industrial chemicals and machinery.
  • Strong verbal communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage effectively with customers, teams, and executive leadership.
  • Willingness to travel (1-2 trips per month).

Pay Range: $104,325.00 - $139,100.00

RESPONSIBILITIES

New Product Development
  • Lead formulation and development of new skin care and home care products from concept to commercialization.
  • Partner with marketing, regulatory, and operations teams to align product development with brand goals, timelines, and market trends.
  • Oversee clinical testing, consumer studies, and product stability protocols.
Quality Assurance & Regulatory Compliance
  • Develop, implement, and maintain robust QA/QC systems in compliance with FDA, ISO, and GMP standards.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with U.S. and international regulatory requirements for cosmetic and OTC products.
  • Monitor and address customer complaints and quality issues, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
Supply Chain Management
  • Manage relationships with contract manufacturers and raw material suppliers.
  • Oversee vendor qualification, audits, and performance metrics.
  • Collaborate with procurement and operations teams to optimize cost, lead times, and inventory.
Forecasting & Distribution Oversight
  • Work with cross-functional teams to develop accurate product forecasts to support demand planning.
  • Ensure seamless coordination between product availability, warehousing, and fulfillment.
  • Lead process improvements in the distribution facility to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
  • Provide direct leadership to distribution center operations, including warehousing, order fulfillment, inventory management, and shipping logistics.
  • Implement systems to ensure on-time, accurate, and compliant order processing, including cold chain or sensitive product handling where applicable.
  • Coordinate closely with customer service, logistics providers, and e-commerce teams to ensure seamless fulfillment and client satisfaction.
Experience and Skills
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in Cosmetic Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • 8+ years of progressive leadership experience in R&D within the cosmetics, personal care, or pharmaceutical industry.
  • Strong working knowledge of FDA, GMP, ISO, and other applicable regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience managing warehousing and distribution functions, preferably in a regulated environment.
  • Proven success in overseeing cross-functional operations including manufacturing, supply chain, and logistics.
  • Excellent leadership, analytical, and project management skills.
  • ERP and inventory management system proficiency (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, or similar) highly preferred.
