Aflac Pediatric Psychology Position

The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and the Emory University Department of Pediatrics invites interested applicants for a faculty position in the Section of Aflac Pediatric Psychology. The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center provides a rich and collaborative environment for clinical research, with a well-funded Clinical Research Office focused in clinical outcomes research. Aflac Psychology is a valued Section of the Center with eight pediatric psychologists, three neuropsychologists, two psychometrists, and up to three postdoctoral fellows.

The successful candidate will join one of the strongest pediatric hematology/oncology programs in the country. Our oncology program cares for more than 500 new cancer cases per year. We represent the pediatric arm of Emory's NCI-designated Winship Cancer Center. We have the largest pediatric hematology program in the country (including 2000 active patients with sickle cell disease) and one of the four largest pediatric oncology programs in the country. Our blood and marrow transplantation program performs an average of 80 transplants annually. Children's Healthcare of Atlantathe only tertiary pediatric center in the dynamic metropolitan Atlanta areaserves a population of nearly 6 million people, providing a strong basis for clinical programs in rare disorders.

This position will allow collaborations with the Department of Epidemiology, Rollins School of Public Health, affiliations with the neighboring American Cancer Society, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Emory's NCI-designated cancer center, the Winship Cancer Institute offering a wealth of opportunities for research collaborations.

Candidates would require a strong record of scholarship. Successful candidates will have: a PhD/PsyD in Clinical Psychology from an APA accredited program, currently licensed as a clinical psychologist and eligible for licensure in the State of Georgia, and a strong record of scholarship and will be expected to work in a collaborative fashion as well as become an independent investigator, conducting nationally recognized research in pediatric psychology and hematology/oncology.

Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and accomplishment. The focus of this position will be innovative research. Clinical effort is expected to be 0.2-0.25 FTE and may include some inpatient and outpatient practice.

Mental Health Aides at the Psychiatric Hospital are assigned to one of two shifts:

Mental Health Aides perform routine, non-technical, para-professional work in caring for patients admitted to the San Diego County Psychiatric Hospital. Work includes observing and monitoring the behavior and whereabouts of patients in order to maintain their safety and interacting with and providing directions to patients when patients require assistance with daily living activities or when patients demonstrate high-risk behaviors. In addition, Mental Health Aides ensure patients receive appropriate diet by reviewing patients' dietary restrictions, food allergies, and preferences; obtain a wide range of information from nursing, physicians, and other support services about patient conditions, treatment plans, and suggested activities; conduct (technical piece) and record vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respiration rate as requested; note observations of patient behavior including complaints or physical symptoms to nurses; provide environmental rounding to ensure a safe and clean environment on patient care unit(s) and courtyard(s); when patients go out of the facility for court, tests, treatments, or appointments, may accompany and assist them in any manner necessary; may participate in observing, facilitating and document group activities; and when crisis occurs, must be able to intervene and calm patients down.

What You Bring to The Table (requirements):

Required
  1. Enrollment in a M.A. Degree in Social Work or Counseling from an accredited college or university; OR Master's Degree with two or more years of work experience in a mental health setting, but not waivered or registered with the board; OR A.A. Degree with six or more years of work experience; OR B.A. Degree with four or more years of work experience.
  2. Certified to conduct a CANS/ANSA assessment within 90 days of employment if CANS/ANSA utilized by program.
  3. Supervised experience in providing counseling services.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of risk assessment, including danger to self or others, and effective community-based interventions for those with high risk.
  5. Demonstrated cultural responsiveness in working with diverse families and communities.
  6. Must be able to respond quickly to emergencies, and to learn and implement Pro- ACT (or other agency approved crisis de-escalation training).
  7. Clean driving record: current CA Driver's License or ability to obtain within 10 days after hired.
  8. Must have access to dependable transportation; personal car insurance meeting minimum liability coverage required if position requires driving for work or transporting participants.
  9. Basic computer and keyboarding competence with the ability to use Microsoft Office Suite and/or competency with electronic clinical documentation systems.
Preferred
  1. Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of diagnostic assessment, crisis management, and individual/family/group behavioral treatment methods for target population of program.
  2. One (1) year experience with program target population (Example: intellectually disabled, homeless, teens or young adults, seriously emotionally disturbed).
  3. One (1) year experience with program modality (example: school-based, residential, mobile/community-based, wraparound, etc.
  4. Demonstrated ability to assess, triage and organize work.
  5. Applies a strength-based, culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and flexible approach to supervision, participant and community service, in order to support participant recovery, health, and wellness.
  6. Familiarity, training, certification, or experience with recovery-model orientation, public mental health and child welfare systems, and/or trauma-informed interventions.
  7. Fluency in prevailing language(s) of the community.
  8. Experience with or knowledge of designing, supervising, monitoring, changing, and discontinuing individualized behavioral interventions for staff delivering behavioral services (e.g., TBS).
