SUMMARY:
The Manager, Research Projects is responsible for managing complex Operational Research (OR) projects of the River Blindness, Lymphatic Filariasis, Schistosomiasis, and Malaria Programs, including OR during onchocerciasis post-treatment surveillance (e.g., black fly entomology) and lymphatic filariasis post-validation surveillance across Africa, the Americas, and other parts of the world, as needed. Serving as research coordinator, the Manager, Research Projects liaises with the institutional review board (IRB) and implements research projects with quality, safety, and ethical considerations in strict adherence to the approved protocols.
As a member of the Epidemiology, Research, and Innovation team, the Manager, Research Projects reports directly to the Senior Associate Director for Research for the team and receives technical guidance from Epidemiologists on project-specific tasks that the Epidemiologists may be leading. Works closely with The Carter Center country offices and external partners to support the administration of the compliance, procurement, financial, conduct, and other related aspects of the research.
This Atlanta-based position requires some domestic and international travel an an ability to travel without restriction. Due to the travel requirement, Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) will be required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages complex research projects, overseeing administrative activities, coordinating project work plans, and ensuring adherence to regulations and deadlines.
- Collaborates with the Sr. Associate Director - Research, Program Epidemiologist, and Data Analysts to plan, execute, and monitor research activities.
- Maintains and documents study data and systems, analyzes data to identify discrepancies, researches causes, and prepares reports, tables, and graphs to assess study performance.
- Oversees study budgets, procurement needs, and financial reporting; may develop and submit grant proposals and monitor expenses for active protocols.
- Leads the development and updating of research protocols, determining necessary modifications to methodologies and tools.
- Manages all aspects of IRB and ethical review processes, including protocol submissions, updates, continuing reviews, study close-outs, and staff certifications; serves as liaison to ethical review committees.
- Develops and facilitates training for field teams and supervisors; supervises and mentors students, interns, and consultants involved in program activities.
- Coordinates regular meetings and presentations to highlight research progress and collaborates on the preparation of reports and publications.
- Provides leadership and guidance to staff, fostering effective study implementation and supporting progress toward strategic research goals.
- Designs and develops databases or coordinates technical support for ancillary studies, as needed.
- Maintains professional development by pursuing relevant educational and training opportunities.
- Ensures compliance with organizational policies and performs other related duties as required.
- A master's degree in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, sociology, and psychology or related discipline and two years of professional level research experience, OR an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proven experience coordinating global health research.
- Experience in project management, epidemiology/health research, and study designs.
- Team player with excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- An analytical mindset with problem-solving skills.
- An understanding of data administration and management functions (collection, analysis, dissemination).
- Proficiency using MS Office (Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint).
- Experience working in Africa would be desirable.

Basic Qualifications
- PhD, or Master's degree and 4+ years of quantitative field research experience
- Experience investigating the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to business problems and products

**What are we looking for?**
- Bachelor's degree required;
