* Reviews existing data in patient record. Collects and evaluates additional pertinent clinical information by inspection, palpation, percussion, auscultation and patient interview.
* Inspects chest x-ray to determine presence of or changes in consolidation, atelectasis, pneumothorax, opacification, position of tracheal tube and other conditions.
* Recommends respiratory care alternatives to meet patient care objectives. Recommends the collection of additional pertinent data through chest x-ray, blood gas analysis, pulmonary function studies, and other laboratory tests.
* Performs and evaluates bedside spirometry, pulmonary mechanics and pulmonary function studies. Determines appropriateness of prescribed therapy and goals for identified pathophysiological state.
* Selects, assembles and checks the equipment for proper function, operation and cleanliness, including correction of malfunctions. Performs procedures for disinfection and sterilization.
* Conducts prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve maintenance of a patient airway, including maintenance of adequate humidification, use of appropriate oro-nasopharyngeal airways, and changing of tracheostomy tubes. Explains planned therapy and goals to patient.
* Conducts prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve removal of bronchopulmonary secretions, and administers prescribed pharmacologic agents.
* Conducts prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve adequate spontaneous and artificial ventilation.

* Initiates, conducts and modifies respiratory therapy techniques in an emergency setting, including CPR, monitoring and patient transport.
* Records therapy and results as required by hospital policy and regulating agencies; communicates information to appropriate members of health care team.
* May assist physician performing bronchoscopy, tracheostomy, and invasive monitoring.
* Develops education and training programs, and conducting of in-service training for departmental and non-departmental staff.

Must be able to perform, under the supervision of Pulmonologist and RT Director. Must be able to provide maintenance of artificial airways, assessing and weaning mechanical ventilated patients, oxygen therapy, aerosol treatments, DPI treatments, Tracheostomy tube changes, Pulse oximetry, CPT, assisting and resolving an acute respiratory illness. Patient and family education/training. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, demonstrates ability to relate appropriately and work effectively with others, and ability to prioritize multiple assignments with out sacrificing the quality of the end product.

**Position Summary**
At Stony Brook Medicine, our TH Respiratory Therapist are a valuable member of our team, Respiratory Care is an allied health specialty concerned with the performance of diagnostic cardiopulmonary evaluation and respiratory therapy treatment applied to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system. It includes related education of the patient, family and public. Qualified candidates should demonstrate excellent intrapersonal skills and time management skills. **Brief Description of Duties:**
All Respiratory Care Practitioners work under the supervision of the Director and/or the Associate Director(s) of the Department and are responsible for performing various basic and advanced respiratory procedures that include, although are not limited to, the following:
Intubation, arterial puncture and blood gas analysis, mechanical ventilator management of adult, pediatric and neonatal patients in the following areas: Surgical, Medical, Burn, Pediatric, Neonatal, Cardiac Surgery and Anesthesia Post-Op Intensive Care Units. Incumbent will perform other pertinent respiratory therapy and patient care duties as required.
**Qualifications**
**Required:** Associates degree in Respiratory Therapy. Certificate of completion from an approved therapist level Respiratory Therapy Program. Registered Respiratory Therapist. 0-1 year experience. Current NYS Therapist License which is required under NYS Law.
**Preferred:** Bachelor's degree.
