Reports to: Vice President, Bank Street Education Center

Summary Position: Bank Street Education Center (the Ed Center) is a division within Bank Street College of Education (the College), created to support Bank Street's public impact work through external partnerships. The Ed Center's mission is to disrupt inequities in school systems. The organization is currently seeking an Executive Director of Responsive Design to lead our Responsive Design portfolio that provides adult learning opportunities for districts, school leaders, educators, and communities to think about the design (and redesign) of learning experiences. The current portfolio of projects* includes work in the following areas:
  • Leadership Fellowships:
    • Supports high school leaders who are redesigning their schools to offer relevant career pathways and work-based learning opportunities for students.
  • Career-Connected Curriculum Support:
    • Enhances existing CTE and industry curriculum by adding more hands-on, student-centered, and project based elements.
  • New School Design and Planning:
    • Provides guidance, tools, and support to enable teachers, leaders, and students to promote student engagement and voice, hands-on academic rigor, and career-connected, relevant learning, resulting in better outcomes for all students.
*Note: The portfolio offerings may change or expand in response to community and district demands to more fully realize our vision for effective and equitable teaching and learning for all.

Key relationships: The Executive Director, Responsive Design will report directly to the Ed Center's Vice President and will work closely with fellow senior leaders across the Ed Center and College. The Executive Director of Responsive Design will manage efforts to raise philanthropic and contract funding for the Responsive Design portfolio and oversee the operation and execution of Responsive Design projects. This role will also support the design of innovative new programs and partnerships within the Education Center and across Bank Street College to advance the division's mission.

Responsibilities: In collaboration with their supervisor, senior leaders, and Ed Center staff members, the Executive Director of Responsive Design will be responsible for the following:

Responsive Design Portfolio:
  • Supervise and develop a team, including full-time staff and consultants, and additional team members and interns contingent upon funding;
  • Co-develop and implement a cohesive Responsive Design business development strategy, leveraging a strong portfolio of existing foundation and contract-based relationships;
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with partner school systems and relevant stakeholders, including state or district leaders, school leaders, community members, educators, etc.;
  • Inform the development of measurement and evaluation plans that reflects the mission and goals of the Responsive Design portfolio and broader Ed Center;
  • Ensure Responsive Design projects are staffed and resourced according to funding requirements, including working closely with Ed Center leaders to draft, revise, and reflect on the project budget as well as engaging in recruiting, hiring, onboarding, developing staff, and onboarding project team members;
  • Lead Responsive Design partnerships across the Ed Center project portfolio, including managing partner relationships and internal project teams, as well as ensuring that the design and implementation of programmatic work advances the Ed Center mission and organizational values;
  • Support with the research, design, and creation of professional learning arcs based on project goals, objectives, and deliverables;
  • Design and facilitate rich instructional learning experiences, as well as maintain partnerships with key leaders in the field and at the College;
Ed Center-wide:
  • Develop models for planning and implementation of innovative new ideas that draw from research, best practice, and Bank Street approach to meet strategy goals and the needs of partners, as relevant
  • Design, launch, and incubate identified projects
  • Conduct research and produce concept papers, briefing documents, and proposals to define new programs and secure funding for them; become knowledgeable about similar programs and research to support new ideas
  • Contribute to Bank Street's position in the national conversation about education innovation, career pathways, and high school redesign which may include presenting at conferences, writing articles, blog posts, op-eds, etc.;
  • Synthesize data from partnership projects to inform high-quality recommendations for school system staff to improve instruction at scale;
  • Engage with fellow senior leaders in strategic planning for the Ed Center, including supporting initiatives that support the College's broader strategic plan;
  • Support the internal operational systems, including maintaining and revising ways of working; and
  • Perform job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Skills & Knowledge:
  • Kindergarten to grade 12 instructional leadership knowledge, with particular focus on high schools/secondary schools
  • Knowledge of career-connected learning and career pathways
  • Background in progressive teaching and learning, as well as project-based learning, instruction, professional development, coaching, and assessment
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with various levels of an organization, experienced educators, and district teams
  • Skilled facilitator of culturally responsive adult learning experiences
  • Strong communication, analytical thinking, project management, and problem-solving skills
  • Comfort with Google Suite tools and Slack for team collaboration
Experiences:
  • At least 10 years of work in a public school district/school leadership role or commensurate experience
  • At least 5 years of management experience
  • Demonstrated ability to design and manage complex and multiple projects
  • Demonstrated expertise in designing and implementing large-scale adult learning experiences, particularly at the high school/secondary school level
  • Flexibility in an ambiguous, fast-paced environment of quickly changing priorities and tight deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, including management and coaching of direct reports and lateral leadership, and developing a team-focused collaborative culture
  • Master's degree in education or a related field

**What you'll do.**
+ Conduct user research (interviews, surveys, contextual inquiries, on-site observations) with factory floor personnel, supervisors, maintenance teams, and other stakeholders to deeply understand their tasks, pain points, and needs.
+ Develop user personas, journey maps, and workflow diagrams specific to manufacturing environments.

**You'll have.**
+ Bachelor's degree in computer science HCI, Interaction Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Psychology, or a related field, OR equivalent practical experience
+ 5+ years experience as a UI/UX Designer, Product Designer, or similar role, with a portfolio showcasing your design process and impactful solutions.
+ 5+ years hands-on experience in industry-standard design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, Axure RP).
+ 3+ years demonstrating a solid grasp of user-centered design, usability principles, and information architecture, alongside practical experience in user research and usability testing.
+ 3+ years of experience conducting various forms of user research and usability testing.
+ 3+ years of experience taking highly complex technical information and transforming it into intuitive, user-friendly experiences.
