Job Summary:
Under direct supervision and control of a licensed pharmacist, provides in-person and telephone reception, receives and directs new and refill prescriptions for further processing, produces computerized or typed prescription labels, packages and sells filled prescriptions and pharmaceutical merchandise and assists pharmacy personnel with clerical functions.
Essential Responsibilities:

+ Receives new prescriptions and/or refills ensuring the correct entry/documentation of information required to process the order.
+ Identifies prescriptions needing refill authorization and refers to providers.
+ Verifies that prescription indicates drug name, strength, direction for use, quantity to be dispensed, any special instructions, and refill information. Recognizes potential for generic or therapeutic substitution.
+ Alerts pharmacists when information is lacking and prescription requires further action and/or when information is noted in allergy and comment field in PIMS.
+ Enters required prescription and/or patient information into pharmacy computer (Pharmacy Information Management System-PIMS) and/or types prescription label.
+ Processes prescription refill authorization requests and enters responses from providers into PIMS.
+ Places filled prescription(s) in appropriate container for immediate or future sale.
+ Organizes and maintains packaged prescriptions for efficient retrieval.
+ Prepares prescriptions for delivery by mail or UPS when requested.
+ Sells prescriptions verifying correct patient through the matching of a call slip against a claim check, checking health plan card or other patient identification.
+ Sells other pharmaceutical merchandise to members.
+ Records all transactions and receipt of cash, checks, or credit card charges in cash register.
+ Provides correct change and appropriate receipts to patients.
+ Maintains the security and integrity of the cash register drawer contents.
+ Counts cash drawer change fund.
+ Is responsible for preparation and proper disposition of deposit.
+ Follows Regional, Area and location cash handling policies and procedures.
+ Prepares and reconciles daily cash register summary documents and prepares daily combined bank deposit for pharmacy.
+ Forwards appropriate cash summary and documentation to cash control as required.
+ Completes appropriate documentation and secures the bank deposit and exchange fund for pick-up by armored car delivery service.
+ May be required to perform duties of the Inventory Control Assistant, which include the ordering and receiving of pharmaceutical merchandise from established sources, affixing price labels, and restocking shelves both within the pharmacy and medical offices.
+ Makes recommendations to management regarding systems or operational improvements to enhance services provided by the department.
+ Maintains work area and equipment in an organized and clean condition; maintains a safe, secure and efficient work environment.
+ Exemplifies pharmacys mission and the organizations vision by contributing to the health satisfaction of members by providing appropriate medications, information, and professional services in a helping, caring, courteous, and efficient manner.

- Hand delivering medications to the patient care units as requested by pharmacy technicians or pharmacists. These will typically include medications that cannot be sent via the tube system due to stability concerns, or medications that are needed STAT.
- The assistant is not allowed to handle or deliver controlled substances to the patient care areas.
- This individual will maintain and replenish inventory of medications and supplies in the main pharmacy area to assure they are available as needed by pharmacy staff.
- Return inventory to stock when it is returned from patient care units or other areas of the hospital. The individual will assure that all returned stock is still within its expiration date and that the label matches the products that are stored in that location.
- Assist pharmacy staff with triaging general phone calls. Calls requiring the knowledge and judgement of pharmacists or technicians must be forwarded to the correct individual.
- Answering phone or other inquiries of a general nature (not requiring a pharmacist or technician).
- Application of proper service recovery communications and actions as needed.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- General tidying and organizing of the main pharmacy area to maintain a neat and efficient work environment.
- Offering ideas and recommendations for increased efficiency of processes in the main pharmacy.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Basic understanding of computers and data entry, excellent customer service and communication skills, and excellent attention to detail all required

**Responsibilities:**
+ General:
+ Provide and receive information (via telephone, person-to-person, or written) to hospital personnel, patients, and visitors. Refer all drug information questions to Staff Pharmacists.
+ Finalize sales using cash register and follow proper cash handling policies and procedures.
+ Develop and maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment.
+ Ensure that all medications in all areas have been safely and securely stored according to Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
+ Maintain all pertinent documentation as required to include eye wash logs, refrigerator logs, perpetual inventory logs, etc.
+ Comply with Federal and State laws such as HIPAA, regulations such as OSHA, and PBM contracting requirements such as FWA and CMS.
+ Practice appropriate hand hygiene both in the pharmacy and in the units.
+ Use computer skills to process and maintain all patient information and records.
+ Distribution:
+ Participate in the distribution of medication including medication cassettes, emergency medication carts, and the delivery of controlled substances per department policy and state and federal requirements.
+ Retrieve medications that have been discontinued and return (and credits if necessary) them to the appropriate pharmacy area.
+ Develop and maintain positive and productive service relationship during medication distribution process.
+ Filling:
+ Assist in the preparation of the proper oral medications for the correct patient for administration at the appropriate time.
+ Use proper technique in the preparation of medications.
+ Assist in filling medication orders through correct labeling, counting, and stocking practices and initial and date products as required.
Required:
+ Completion of high school diploma or equivalent.
