The Managing Director, Risk Advisory Services (RAS), is a senior leader responsible for driving the growth and expansion of BDOs RAS practice through proactive business development, strategic client relationship management, and the delivery of exceptional risk advisory solutions. The Managing Director, Risk Advisory Services (RAS), is a senior leader responsible for driving the growth and expansion of BDOs RAS practice through proactive business development, strategic client relationship management, and the delivery of exceptional risk advisory solutions. This role requires a dynamic, entrepreneurial professional with a proven track record in cultivating new business, expanding client accounts, and positioning the firm as a trusted advisor in the marketplace. The Managing Director will also oversee high-performing engagement teams, ensuring quality client service, operational excellence, and the development of future firm leaders.
Job Duties
Business Development & Market Expansion
- Builds and develops new connections and leverage your existing network and personal brand in the marketplace to drive growth for the firm
- Leads business development initiatives to identify, pursue, and secure new client opportunities, leveraging personal networks, industry events, and targeted outreach
- Participates in relevant industry associations and events to develop and maintain industry focus and relationships
- Develops and executes strategic marketing and sales plans in collaboration with practice leadership to expand the RAS client base and increase market share
- Proactively utilizes network, firm knowledge, and industry insights to deepen existing relationships or form new ones
- Contributes to thought leadership development and present at relevant internal and external industry events
- Communicates effectively with prospects to assess needs and develop clear and accurate project parameters, including scoping descriptions, delivery plans, and budgets
- Demonstrates the ability to collaborate effectively with business developers, marketing, communications, and other internal firm partners to drive pursuits.
- Drives cross-functional collaboration with other BDO service lines and practice leaders to deliver integrated solutions and maximize business opportunities
- Monitors industry trends and client needs to proactively identify new service offerings and market opportunities
- Draws upon technical, industry, and risk advisory knowledge to become a trusted advisor to clients, incorporating emerging risks, trends, and concepts into client conversations
- Increases the firms relevance by understanding each clients culture and strategy and integrating this understanding into service delivery
- Leads account communication strategy and ensure adherence to the reporting protocol defined for each client
- Serves as a high-level contact for clients, addressing inquiries, providing updates, and resolving issues throughout the engagement lifecycle
- Handles complex relationship concerns and demonstrate sound judgment in escalating or seeking additional counsel as needed
- Conducts informational interviews and facilitate meetings with client management to understand business objectives and risk environments
- Works closely with Engagement Partners to communicate control gaps, risk exposures, and process improvement recommendations to client management and Audit Committees
- Ensures client service teams deliver advanced, risk-based solutions and high-quality deliverables tailored to client needs
- Oversees the development and execution of efficient, risk-based audit and advisory plans
- Reviews and approves engagement budgets, monitor project economics, and drive engagement efficiencies
- Practices Leadership & Administration
- Collaborates with RAS leadership to refresh marketing materials, website content, and practice positioning
- Ensures timely and accurate practice administration, including billing, collections, contract management, and engagement realization
- Develops and delivers thought leadership to enhance the firms reputation and visibility in the risk advisory marketplace
- Manages, motivates, and mentors teams to optimize and expand capabilities by cultivating an environment of trust, innovation, diverse perspectives, and challenge
- Recruits, develops, and inspires future leaders of the firm through mentorship focused on understanding the potential and aspirations of the workforce and aligning opportunities accordingly
- Supervises, mentors, and evaluates RAS Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates, fostering a culture of learning, client service, and professional growth
- Ensures team members are trained on relevant software and methodologies
- Provides regular feedback, conduct performance evaluations, and support career development initiatives
- Maintains willingness to give and receive candid feedback in both written and verbal form, and commit to self-development in response to constructive feedback received
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelors degree, required; focus in Accounting, Finance, Management Information Systems, or Business Intelligence,, preferred
- MBA or other relevant advanced degree, preferred
- Ten (10) years of experience within a public accounting firm or Fortune 1000 company in a business development capacity or performing Risk Assessments, internal audits, Sarbanes-Oxley Readiness services, internal control assessments, management consulting as a Financial, Operational or In Information Technology Subject Matter Expert, required
- Experience performing audits of particular industries (manufacturing, retail, distribution, energy, etc.), based upon the RAS practices need, required
- Significant supervisory experience, required
- Experience performing process reviews, systems reviews and reviews of application controls, required
- Experience with internal controls including process control design, preparation of flowcharts & control matrices, documentation and testing of controls, and identification and reporting of control gaps, required
- Experience conducting audit planning, developing audit programs, performing testing, preparing work papers, and drafting audit reports, required
- Experience in client marketing and successfully managing multiple client pursuits and proposal efforts, required
- Experience performing audits within a public accounting environment, preferred
- Certificate of Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Information System Auditor (CISA), or equivalent certifications, preferred
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, required
- Experience in the use of various assurance applications and research tools as is appropriate for this level, required
- Experience with ACL and/or IDEA, and MS Access, preferred
- Solid understanding and experience planning and coordinating all stages of an internal audit
- Knowledge of internal accounting controls and professional standards and regulations
- Superior verbal and written communication skills, specifically business / report writing
- Able to adapt style and messaging to effectively communicate with professionals at all levels both within the client organization and the firm
- Able to successfully multi-task while working independently and within a group environment

We’re seeking a dynamic Risk Advisory Partner with deep financial institutions experience, including Community Banks and Credit Unions. As a RAS Partner you will:
- Lead the development and execution of go-to-market strategies across key industries and geographies, particularly in the Tri-State area. Identify emerging client needs and align RAS offerings to meet them.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to clients, delivering high-impact risk solutions. Drive expansion within existing accounts and lead pursuits for new business opportunities.
- Serve as a Subject Matter Specialist in core financial institution capabilities including loan and credit operations, trust services, financial reporting, compliance management, and branch operations.
- Own and exceed growth targets through proactive business development, strategic partnerships, and collaboration with Assurance, Tax, and Advisory teams.
- Champion the evolution of RAS offerings, including Internal Audit, Regulatory Compliance, Risk Management, and SOX. Leverage technology to enhance delivery and scale.
- Partner with RAS leadership to align resources, develop talent, and ensure high-quality delivery. Mentor emerging leaders and foster a high-performance culture.
- Work closely with Market and Industry Leaders to align RAS strategies with broader firm priorities. Represent RAS in firmwide initiatives and external forums.
What you bring to the role:
- Proven success in a partner-level role with a strong track record of business development and client delivery in Risk Advisory. Banking industry experience is required.
- Deep understanding of risk and compliance in the Financial Institutions industry with a focus on Community Banks and Credit Unions.
- 15+ years of experience, including 10+ in a consulting or public accounting environment.
- Strong executive presence, communication skills, and ability to influence at all levels.
- CPA, CIA, CISA, or similar credentials preferred.
- Experience with digital risk solutions, automation, and shared services is a plus.
- Willingness to travel up to 40%.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree, required; focus in Accounting, Finance, Management Information Systems, or Business Intelligence,, preferred
- MBA or other relevant advanced degree, preferred
Experience:
- Ten (10) years of experience within a public accounting firm or Fortune 1000 company in a business development capacity or performing Risk Assessments, internal audits, Sarbanes-Oxley Readiness services, internal control assessments, management consulting as a Financial, Operational or In Information Technology Subject Matter Expert, required
- Experience performing audits of particular industries (manufacturing, retail, distribution, energy, etc.), based upon the RAS practice's need, required
- Significant supervisory experience, required
- Experience performing process reviews, systems reviews and reviews of application controls, required
- Experience with internal controls including process control design, preparation of flowcharts & control matrices, documentation and testing of controls, and identification and reporting of control gaps, required
- Experience conducting audit planning, developing audit programs, performing testing, preparing work papers, and drafting audit reports, required
- Experience in client marketing and successfully managing multiple client pursuits and proposal efforts, required
- Experience performing audits within a public accounting environment, preferred
License/Certifications:
- Certificate of Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Information System Auditor (CISA), or equivalent certifications, preferred
Software:
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, required
- Experience in the use of various assurance applications and research tools as is appropriate for this level, required
- Experience with ACL and/or IDEA, and MS Access, preferred

- Solid understanding and experience planning and coordinating all stages of an internal audit
- Knowledge of internal accounting controls and professional standards and regulations
- Superior verbal and written communication skills, specifically business / report writing

- Able to collaborate with partners and managers within other service lines and industries, as well as RAS leaders

- Superior analytical and diagnostic skills and ability to break down complex issues and implementing appropriate resolutions
- Capable of working in a demanding, deadline driven environment with a focus on details and accuracy
- Solid project management skills
- Solid US GAAP and GAAS knowledge and familiarity with SEC and PCAOB reporting rules; knowledge of IFRS, a plus
