ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY TECHNICIAN

Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Technicians will be responsible for regulatory requirements relating to OSHA, TCEQ, RCRA, EPA, and DOT requirements. Works with engineers and technicians daily to ensure our manufacturing facility can support manufacturing goals while meeting all environmental, health, and safety objectives.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Health and Safety

  • Perform boots on the ground safety oversight by identifying and correcting work place hazards and unsafe conditions
  • Monitor employee exposure to job and chemical hazards as regulated by OSHA permissible exposure limits
  • Assist in the implementation and compliance of site-specific safety policies
  • Assist in the creation of job hazard analysis an personal protective equipment (PPE) assessments
  • Perform department specific safety surveys using inspection forms to ensure employees are utilizing safe work practices such as utilizing proper PPE, minimizing trip hazards, wearing fall protection etc.
  • Ensure notification and corrective actions are put in place when any unsafe condition is presented or found throughout the site
  • Assist the EHS engineers in accident/mishap investigations when necessary

Environmental

  • Perform tasks related to resource conservation and recovery act (RCRA) regulatory hazardous waste handling, storage and disposal requirements

    • Monitor and manage levels of hazardous waste at each department's satellite accumulation area
    • Ensure all waste is properly labeled
    • Ensure all waste is properly stored, according to its classification
    • Accurately record and maintain 90-day hazardous waste drum logs, hazardous waste sign in sheets, VOC solvent usage logs
    • Accurately perform all required hazardous waste and hazardous material storage area inspections
    • Assist in waste shipments with the waste disposal contractor.


  • Perform weekly storm water inspections per the SWPPP
  • Perform tasks related to spill response/prevention
  • Implement the spill prevention countermeasures and control plan (SPCC) throughout the facility.
  • Perform environmental compliance and due diligence audits

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • 2+ years of experience implementing and overseeing aspects related to an environmental, health and safety program

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in managing hazardous waste storage and satellite accumulation areas
  • Experience in performing boots on the ground safety oversight
  • Experience implementing/developing health and safety plans and policies
  • Experience with emergency response crews in incidents involving hazardous and non-hazardous material releases to air, soil and water
  • Demonstrated strong propensity for hands-on work and attention to detail in either academic or career pursuits
  • Ability to multi-task, to manage shifting priorities and to follow through on projects with minimal supervision
  • Previous experience in a construction/industrial environment
  • Strong organizational and communication skills are essential
  • Ability to work in high-volume, fast paced environment

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This isnot a remote or hybrid position and will require relocation if not already local to the Brownsville, TX area
  • Position occasionally requires the ability to work overtime and weekends when needed

Reports To:          Safety Superintendent


Position Summary: The EHS Technician ensures environmental, health, and safety compliance as outlined by federal, state, and local agencies and as contractually required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Reports to the EHS Safety Superintendent
  • Monitors, evaluates, and enforces the PSI Environmental, Health and Safety programs
  • Conducts routine safety inspections and surveillances; ensures discrepancies are corrected
  • Performs Shipyard Competent Person duties
  • Maintains administrative files as required by the EHS Manual, NPDES permit and other requirements
  • Completes accident/incident/illness investigations and reports to Management and Corporate Insurance Department
  • Provides training as necessary to meet the requirements of regulatory agencies, the EHS Manual and to ensure the ongoing education and safety of employees
  • Maintains safety training records
  • Conducts Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) to ensure employees take required precautionary measures
  • Maintains HAZ/Non-HAZ waste site(s) and materials
  • Assists in performance of tasks related to environmental compliance with NPDES per management, state, and/or federal laws, rules, and/or regulations
  • Perform other duties as assigned

**Overview:**
Provides assistance with Health and Safety conducting quality inspections/operation for Life Safety equipment. Performs technical duties to include providing support for Auburn University environmental, safety and health programs; to recognize, eliminate, and control safety and health hazards and to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, national consensus standards and the Auburn University Safety Policy.
**Areas of Specialization:**
This job may specify responsibilities pertaining to competencies necessary for one or more focused position specializations. **Essential Functions**
+ May participate in the chemical spill emergency response team.
+ May assist with control and remedial measures for hazardous and potentially hazardous conditions.
+ May assist with preparation of reports for control and correction of hazards.
+ Conducts safety inspections, certifications and sample collection as required. Including Fire extinguishers, weather radios, building generators, vehicles, building common areas, etc.
+ May assist with the disposal and/or elimination safety hazards, hazardous water, radiological waste, and pathological waste.

EHS Technicians perform technical duties related to Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS). The EHS Tech will assist the EHS Leader in implementing loss control and accident prevention activities to help ensure compliance with company, local, state, and federal regulations. This position will also be responsible for developing and implementing safety programs, strategies, policies, training, and procedures. This position will establish and promote maintenance of a safe, accident-free, and healthy workplace environment at the office level and production level by performing the following:
**Responsibilities:**
· Perform initial management of change (MOC) evaluations and work with project managers to ensure tasks are prioritized and completed on time.
· Assist in development of Job Safety Analysis' (JSAs).
· Institute team-based care initiatives through engagement of front-line leadership and department employees.
· Develop critical inventories of RRI, lifting procedures, and department risk assessments.
· Facilitate cross functional ergonomic assessments and identification of workstation improvements.
· Assist team with driving EHS excellence as a core value and promotes an enthusiastic safety culture at all levels.
· Coordinates EHS improvement projects to ensure business continuity.
· Perform EHS preventative maintenance and inspection audits in accordance with the business and regulatory requirements.
· Provide EHS recommendations to drive metric improvements and reduce hazards and risk for facility-wide initiatives.
· Execute daily plant walks using existing and new skills, knowledge, and abilities to provide basic EHS compliance guidance, hazard recognition, and identify opportunities for improvement to site employees.
· Design and implement workplace processes and procedures using EHS standard work from our Business Operating System (BOS) and other appropriate resources.
· Conduct routine environmental and safety inspections and maintain oversight of hazardous and special waste staging areas and take corrective actions when necessary to maintain regulatory compliance and best practices.
· Develop and deliver effective EHS related training to small groups for compliance, employee development and awareness.
· Assists with project management and oversees contractors/staffing for site projects.
· Complete required documentation relating to business or regulatory requirements
· Support and collaborate with all other support departments as assigned.
· Lead and participate in on-site safety teams and/or committees.
· Assist with development and training of the EHS Management System (Gensuite), and Ergonomics and Behavior Based Safety (BBS) programs. Collect, input, and analyze EHS data to determine actions that help ensure compliance and continuous improvement.
· Lead and maintain Management for Daily Improvement (MDI) meetings and board requirements.
· Assist supervisors with conducting cross functional incident and near miss investigations to establish a root cause and determine temporary and permanent containment solutions using the Hierarchy of Controls. Follow up on those corrective and preventative actions to drive on time closure of incident investigations, concerns, and findings.
· Monitor compliance and assist EHS Leader with Emergency Action Planning including evacuation, shelter, and active shooter drills.
**Qualifications:**
· High School Diploma/GED Required
· Associate's degree in a Science or Technical field of study or specialized EHS Certificates preferred
· Wastewater operator license preferred

Performs workplace industrial hygiene surveys assessing all occupational, environmental, and radiological health hazards. Provide technical data and completed forms/documentation to staff for inclusion into occupational/environmental/radiological health program files. Enter data into DOEHRS-IH in accordance with local procedures and requirements.
**POSITION QUALIFICATION/REQUIREMENTS:**
**Education:** Minimum of Associate's Degree in one of the following disciplines:
· Occupational Health/Safety, Core Science or Engineering Technology.
· Alternatively, a minimum of a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalency combined with a minimum of four years of experience working in a position in which a 4B0X or 43E Air Force Specialty Code is held.
**Equivalency Determination Request:** An equivalency determination may be requested as a substitute for education requirements on this labor category.
**Cardiac Certifications** : Must have the following hands-on certification through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross
· Basic Life Support (BLS)

Inspects, tests, and evaluates workplace environments, equipment, and practices to ensure they follow all applicable standards and government regulations in accordance with AF requirements. Includes sample collection and survey measurements of potential hazards and engineering controls.
· Recommends health hazard controls to mitigate hazardous and potentially hazardous conditions or equipment.
· Assists staff in monitoring environmental conditions on the installation to include the collection of water samples for compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act, swimming pool and bathing area water quality evaluations and program Exhibit 5, Version 1.0 (4 Oct 22) compliance, and occupational and environmental health site assessment sampling.
Investigates occupational illnesses and injuries to identify why they happened and how they might be prevented in the future.
· Performs evaluations for compliance with fetal protection requirements.
· Reviews hazardous materials requests, plans, work orders, contracts and specifications for compliance with environmental and occupational health directives.
Serves as a member on committees for occupational health, and environmental
protection matters.
**HOURS:**
Monday-Friday
**Base Bown Days:**
During a planned closure of the facility due to training, closures before or after holidays family down days, Employee will only be compensated for the actual hours worked. If clinic is closed and employee is not able to work, employee will be required to use leave or take LWOP (without penalty).
**SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS**
Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Must be able and willing to reprioritize on short notice and work on multiple simultaneous projects. Flexible and able to work with various personalities. Teamwork skills required. Time management skills required. The ability to meet deadlines in a deadline intensive environment is essential. High level of adaptability and willingness to embrace change in a fast-paced, demanding environment.

Key Responsibilities
